Phoney war dispatches: wacky Wednesday edition

• I failed to mention it at the time, but followers of this site no doubt picked up on the poll of Sydney and Melbourne voters conducted by Nexus Research over the weekend. Well, bless their cotton socks, for they have published their data in a form that allows cross-tabulation of responses to the various questions asked, including age, occupational status and vote at the 2004 election.

• After a nudge from the Joint Standing Committee on Electoral Matters, the Australian Electoral Commission has ruled it will be business as usual this year for the National Tally Room in Canberra. This now performs a basically ceremonial role, and there have been frequent suggestions it might be scrapped. JSCEM argues that the tally room presents a “visible symbolism of transparency in the election process” (UPDATE: Seems I’m a bit slow here).

Greg Kelton of The Advertiser speaks of a 64-page report which translates last year’s South Australian state election results into federal outcomes, compiled by state parliamentary librarian Jenni Newton-Farrelly. I have not been able to locate the report, but it shows Labor gaining Sturt, Boothby, Makin, Wakefield and Kingston, with the Liberals dropping a Senate seat to “either the Democrats, Family First or the Greens”.

Imre Salusinszky of The Australian reports “evidence of a groundswell of support for Maxine McKew” among voters in Bennelong‘s conspicuous Chinese community.

Andrew Fraser of The Australian reports that the much-touted plebiscites on Queensland council amalgamations will be conducted by postal ballot after the federal election, as the Australian Electoral Commission does not wish for confusion to arise over postal election votes.

• Speaking of which, the Sydney Morning Herald reports the number of postal, pre-poll and absentee votes is expected to top 20 per cent at this election, due to the active promotion of postal voting by the major parties. This increases the chance that the result will still be up in the air when counting closes on election night.

Greg Roberts of The Australian reports that registration of Pauline Hanson’s United Australia Party will not be cleared in time for the election if it is called in the next few days. This would result in her list again appearing under an anonymous group name, which was deemed to have cost her votes in 2004.

• Anyone speak Portuguese?

  1. I’m listening to QT.
The most impressive Rudd has ever been in parliament, kicking absolute crap out of the government! Julia doing great too!
These Liberals are the people Glen thinks deserve another 3 years?
    LMFAO

  2. Rann hits back –

But Mr Rann said Mr Downer’s comments undermined both the federal and state Liberal parties.

“What does this say about his confidence in (Prime Minister) John Howard?” Mr Rann asked.
“What does this say about ‘the team’?

“What does this say about what senior Liberals think about (current SA Liberal leader) Martin Hamilton-Smith’s leadership?

“In one stroke, Alex (Downer) has undermined both John Howard and … Martin-Hamilton-Smith.”

  3. Suspension of standing and sessional orders moved

Mr Abbott, 3:26:44 PM, moved—That the Member for Grayndler be suspended from the service of the House.

  4. Well Rudd has certainly confirmed his reputation as an absolutely appalling parliamentary performer – and the fact that he’s a monumental flake by holding himself out as some latterday Saint whilst authorising smearful questions and pretending to no nothing about them.

Just a typical day in Parliament. Labor is getting trounced yet again.

  5. 345 The Piping Shrike

Just logged on. No,no. Rann lose because of Alexander going up against him? Don’t think so, reckon that would guarantee Rann a win.

The Rann angst is about resentment over the water issue and his apparent inertia. We have had to water with buckets, though Rann finally realised it was driving everyone nuts! and rule will be adjusted slightly next month. The water policy is full of inconsistencies, eg industry not circumscribed at all. No announcement of any kind of plan such as desal plant.

And it appears that a lot of people don’t like Rann (labor voters) for this and other reasons and I reckon the Libs are working on it, now it seems to include Alexander.

  6. It’s funny how people’s version of events is so coloured by which party they’re hacks for.

    This parliamentary ‘debate’? Irrelevant.

  7. A-C: you must be listening to a different program to the rest of us.
Correction: Captain Smirk, Dolly Downer and the Rodent are getting trounced.
David Hawker: possibly the worst Speaker in the history of parliament.

  8. Rudd’s PR unit leaked the health ‘problem’ to the media saying they were anti-Labor just so he could get sympathy and get his gaff off the front pages of the paper…as if the Libs would leak such a story when they already had him by the balls by 4pm that arvo its a joke…the Libs had more to lose by leaking that info and they wouldnt have done it so it had to be the ALP maybe it was Harry Quick saying he was anti-Labor…what’s BS about is they said anti-Labor outside Parliament ok so then how are the Libs involved if its outside Federal Parliament…

Typical Labor Rudd cant pull out another sympathy vote winner when he makes his next gaff!

The last speech we will ever hear, in Parliament, coming up from Howard

I would rather hear his concession speech :):):) …. We only have cable on one tv in this house although we have more than one tv. I turn the TV over to the kids when they get home from school so no more QT here. I will catch highlights on the news tonight 🙂

  10. That’s correct Kina. A-C can’t fool us. After that performance Rud’s standing and Gillard’s standing has risen another cog and A-C knows it.

  11. I’ve just got in, and saw reports of big Kimbo’s farewell speech. A tear was in my eye. He was a big man who was fatally badly advised before 2001. If he had stood up over Tampa, etc, he might have lost the election by a bigger margin, but maybe we wouldn’t have had the horror of Simon Crean and Mark Latham as “leaders”.
He was (and is) a good man, and the ALP will miss him. Vale , big fella!

  12. I’m just saying HH that its illogical to say the Libs would have released that story…why when the had Rudd on the ropes do something like that you mightn’t like them but they are stupid…it had to be Rudd…its a sympathy vote and Rudd is trying to cover up his gaff…

I cant think of you as a decent socialist if you dont get worried that your leader doesnt know productivity or tax thresholds seriously id be calling for the head of a Liberal who wanted to be PM and didnt know this stuff…

  13. I’m just saying HH that its illogical to say the Libs would have released that story…

They’re a smear team Glen. It’s what they do.

It’s no different the smear by dolly downer about the strip-club. They did it. It was stupid. It was counter-productive. But they did it anyway. Because that’s the only thing they know how to do.

  14. Rudd just snookered Abbott and moved an amendment, that the PM should discuss the future of Australia. Abbott just nuked the amendment – so the Govt does not want to debate the future of the country.

  15. Get real Glen, Laurie Oakes confirmed the source was Coalition based.

If Rudd is bad because he can’t recall the tax table off the top of his head, how bad is a treasurer who doesn’t know how much the tax cuts he is delivering are worth?

  16. Pi Rudd’s PR team leaked that aswell…

Everybody on this blog was saying Rudd did it and you are a minority…Rudd could afford it because he was so high in the polls that he leaked it now instead of during the campaign.

  17. A decent conservative is an oxymoron.

Conservatism and Neo-Conservatism in particular has been shown up by the Australian and US governments as both morally and intellectually bankrupt.

  18. More on the Rudd health rumours. Ian Courtlang(PR guy) said on ABC radio in Sydney this morning that the story was being circulated at a party he attended last Friday with other CONSERVATIVE figures in business. It’s plainly obvious someone connected with Howard has been spreading this stuff around for a while.

  19. Glen: [‘ if you dont get worried that your leader doesnt know productivity or tax thresholds seriously id be calling for the head of a Liberal who wanted to be PM and didnt know this stuff…’]

Well Glen, unless you are a hypocrite, you should be calling for Howard’s head.

    http://www.theaustralian.news.com.au/story/0,25197,22448777-11949,00.html

[‘Labor moved into damage control, releasing a Hansard report showing that in May, Mr Howard inadvertently misled parliament by incorrectly identifying a $30,000 tax threshold as cutting in at $35,000. ‘]

  20. The supposed seat belts in buses policy is just another bribe for marginal electorates. You can bet the kids in safe rural National Party electorates will miss out. It’s only for Gary Nairn, who’s going to lose Eden Monaro anyway.

  21. Big-Bob did you not hear Laurie he said anti-Labor outside of Parliament that could be anyone if it was Liberal he’d have said it was Oakes is a Labor stooge…

If it was outside of Parliament how can a Liberal Party dirt unit be to blame???

Don’t you think its a little bit of a coincidence that it came out on Rudd’s worst day of campaigning where he put his foot in it royally it was leaked by Labor to cover up his gaff…you’d have to be blind not to see it…

Gary start digging your own mate…the left is full of dirt anyway!

  22. 481 Glen Says: September 20th, 2007 at 3:46 pm

Pi Rudd’s PR team leaked that aswell…

You’re a little short on the proof of that statement Glen. But that’s the thing about people who support people who have smear teams… they never see a problem with trying to substantiate their statements.

You’re just going to have to come to grips with the fact that the smear team of the liberals is scoring own-goal after own-goal. Deal with it, or find a party that doesn’t like living in the slime.

  23. Actually Asanque the fact that Rudd who has been a leader for less than a year doesnt know and then the one he said didnt exist is more of a gaff than Howard who does know but made an honest mistake…

You are forgetting the word ‘inadvertently’…i think its fair to say that Howard’s was an honest mistake whereas Rudd’s was not…after all Howard knows more about the economy than Rudd…and if you think Howard has to go for making a mistake instead of Rudd’s making a clear cut gaff at least Howard doesnt need staffers to tell him what productivity means…lol!

  24. and if Rudd puts them on the record as having run away from it, then he looks good and they can bag the whole front bench as cowards ….. cool move, it is a win-win situation for the labor party …

  25. “Division has been called.

Of course the Govt have the Numbers”

let’s call it “the coalition”, not “the Govt”

This mob can’t even dish the dirt properly.
