Bernard Keane at The Stump reports this week’s Essential Research poll shows the Coalition with a two-party lead for the first time since the agency commenced polling in early 2008. The Coalition is up two points on the primary vote to 46 per cent, for a two-party lead of 51-49, while Labor is down two points to 39 per cent. Essential continues to show an unusually low vote for the Greens, who are steady on 8 per cent. Keane has more on supplementary questions to do with issues of concern and the best party to handle them.
UPDATE: Full Essential report here.
Victoria –
Most people buy their first home when they are hitting their prime employment
years and their salaries are rising. The old rule of thumb of limiting loan
repayments to a maximum of 30% of gross monthly income worked well
for many years. Some stretched this 30% but the more you do it the more strife
they potentially run into.
Back in the 70’s, 80’s etc they also had the *benefit* of inflation actually
reducing their repayments in real terms, but not nominal ones of course.
Its situations where people borrow 90% up to 110% of the total purchase
price combined with repayments up around 40% of gross monthly
income that they cut their own throats.
apparently Joe Hockey is going on 7 pm report tonight to talk about the banks. You have to hand to the coalition. They are certainly media wh>res
Dee @138
Exactly my view. Building a new home contributes to the economy. It employs people who in turn pay taxes.
NG on existing homes contributes nothing to the economy, and creates a drain on tax revenues.
Buying and selling existing homes, whether neg geared or not, also contributes nothing to the economy either. Try telling that to “ordinary Aussies” though.
Interest rates were much lower on the “most concerned” about list than housing prices, fuel cost, exec salaries and banking regulation.
Controlling exec salaries would do bugger all for the average Australian as it would save next to nothing IMHO.
dave
no doubt about it. People are overcommitting themselves in some instances.

I actually think the cost of housing is the most pressing issue, and the most difficult to get right.

Auction clearances two year low this weekend in Melbourne
there had not been an interest rate for 6 months, and if there is a slump there may be lower prices.
I cannot beleive the prices you pay over there i know of weatherboard house in an inner suburb of Melbourne that went for over 1 million, i looked at it on line it would may be fetch 400 Th’s here. while people keep paying big money then prices will rise,
people just want pay that type of money here for homes.
]
Try some of the House prices in WA – Midvale, which is a very low socio-economic suburb with lots of indigenous folk and has problems with crime etc.
Here is an example of the price of a house:

[I actually think the cost of housing is the most pressing issue, and the most difficult to get right.]
True. Plus even if the Government came up with a ‘solution’ it’d upset homeowners as their house value went down. There’s probably more votes in not doing anything than doing something. Or ideally, to sound as if you’re listening to concerns and may at some stage in the not-too-distant future do something.

I certainly remember Abbott getting quite a bit of traction on the issue during the election although I don’t seem to be able to recall a single thing he said about solving the problem. Obviously the people affected tend to be in the swinging voter demographic making the issue somewhat piquant.

no, I’m stating the bleeding obvious – something some here fail to recognise.
[Housing has become expensive everywhere. Difficult to find a property in outer suburban Melbourne for less than $500,000.00. How are young people going to afford that?]
look its such a worry our son came home for that reason i think, nice to be near us but he saw what his mates where buying over there and had a rethink about his career.
His house was around 410, double block view of the city bridge need a bit of work .
i was stunned the house was weatherboard and over 50 years old and over 1 million.
In Europe now people rent for their whole lives, i am not sure how it works but it means that when you retire you are still not in front, its not a thing i would like to see here but may be that is what will happen its a really worry.
No matter what the gov do they cannot stop it i think, its really the wealthy who buy these homes up and then the prices are forced up i suppose and so it goes on.
I still wonder what will happen down the track this cannot not keep happening but then our parents said the same, My daughter ask me what we earned when the int rate was 15 percent in the mid 80s i had to stop and think i know it certainly was nothing like they earn now.
The price of food seems to have gone up to. When i come back from the supermarket there is never any goodies like there once was, my daughters say the same, you know the choc biscuits or the special piece of cheese , i think diary products are very expensive cheese is nearly off our list.
We only have Coles and woolworths here do you have other outlets.
[Oh well, You obviously don’t read my comments and so are simply making unfounded assumptions. At least you’ve confirmed for me what I suspected of you all along.]
What name do you post under at LP? Because the only ‘confessions’ I’ve ever seen is the one regurgitating the ALP party lines on here and on Pure Poison (to a lot lesser degree).
I’ve only just “re-engaged” with PB over the last few weeks and the posts I’ve seen from you confirm what I suspected of you all along too.

Confessions @ 158,
Me, as you already knew being a long time reader of LP.
So who is Confessions?
Interesting that the major move upwards in the Essentials poll was in the Nats vote, rather than the Libs, with a corresponding fall in Labors. MDB, the strengthening Oz dollar, and interest rates, I’d be thinking.

But according to him you are branded a “Hack” and targetted for his “special attention” 🙂
moving house is another issue, for us oldies, scaling down i dont want to but the time may come and i will put a sign at the end of my street and in the paper and sell the house ourselves i am not paying an agent for turning up at my door to show people through.
we recently looked through a home { our daughter was looking} that was self advertised the lady of the house took us through while her husband took names and addresses ect. if you showed interest or wanted to purchase then you where directed to their lawyer the house sold i was very happy for them. I would like to see a time when you can advertise your home on a site on the internet private sales.
Then there is the lawyer fees ect. we think getting a gardener in to mow for us putting the acreage in to natives bush would be cheaper than moving, then of course there is the power we are looking at solar hot water at the moment but is it worth it for two people.
my say
Rent is also expensive. Especially if you want to live closer to the city.
I suppose if someone wants to buy a property, they have to make huge sacrifices, or become a doctor 🙂
Hockey is getting a bit cockey ( really wanted to use that line for a while ! ) and hopefully he over extends and ends up where he belongs. ( leave that for the imagination)

and water,

[I still believe the polls will take six to nine months to show any realistic trend and I still believe it will be in labors favor.]
Hockey has built a lot of heat up in the mortgage belt which I believe has manipulated the polls. This will run out of steam especially in light of the impending government changes.
The Coalition are firing off in all directions trying to get some polling advantage to justify their existance.
sorry the wrong copy, i at 182

believe it or not, I never thought to use that phrase 🙂
but agreed, he is definitely getting too cocky. He needs to come down a peg or three!

No, you missed my point completely – I mreant our Green “FRiends” praise him when they dish out the Labor “Dirt”, but when it’s the Greens- they froth at the mouth.
As for Dio – he’s Kerri-Anne Kennerley with a Medical Degree 🙂

Not sure about the former, but in Northam the local Nationals Member Brendon Grylls is in favour of the Detention Centre, while the Federal Member Judi Moylan, despite her earlier opposition to the Lib’s AS policy has somehow sided with the locals.
may beeee hockey and co are doing this to early, nothing much left for them
can any one think of their next move that is so popular .
boats, Banks, may be supermarkets, food, whats next, they wouldn’t mention dr. bills would they as they have not helped in the health area with not passing the medicare levy that would of helped bring in dental cover.
now dental that is one of my real annoyances, clean ect 84 dollars out of pocket i know its great prevention and with lupus i need it done every three months , I had been told i should have crowns ect but at 10th dollars who is he kidding.
