Nielsen: 51-49 to Coalition

GhostWhoVotes reports a federal Nielsen poll to be published in tomorrow’s Fairfax broadsheets will show the Coalition, unchanged on last month. More to follow.

UPDATE: GhostWhoVotes further relates the primary votes are Labor 35 per cent (up one point), Coalition 43 per cent (steady) and Greens 13 per cent (down one), and the poll also shows support for gay marriage at 57 per cent and opposition at 37 per cent.

UPDATE 2: The poll finds little change in the leaders’ personal ratings. Julia Gillard is stable on both approval (54 per cent) and disapproval (39 per cent), while Tony Abbott is up two on approval to 47 per cent and down two on disapproval to 48 per cent. Gillard’s lead as preferred prime minister is 53 per cent (steady) to 40 per cent (up a point). The Coalition leads as best party to handle interest rates (47 per cent to 33 per cent) and create greater competition between the banks (46 per cent to 32 per cent). Fifty-five per cent now believe the government should serve a full term, against 42 per cent who would like a new election as soon as possible.

UPDATE 3: Essential Research also has the Coalition leading 51-49, for the third week running. Julia Gillard’s approval rating is at 43 per cent, down two on a month ago, and her disapproval up one to 38 per cent, while Tony Abbott is up a point on approval to 40 per cent and down five on disapproval to 40 per cent. Gillard’s lead as preferred prime minister has narrowed from 49-33 to 45-34. There are also questions on viewing of sport on free-to-air and pay television, presumably apropos of the anti-siphoning issue – although opinions on this are not engaged directly.

You are sooks because all you do is moan about it.

Please refer me to any remark I have made that is less than civil. (Truthy put downs excluded ;))

  2. [We had that millionaire quiz program on the tv just now, and I heard Tony Abbott’s name as an answer to a question. I wasn’t watching and didn’t hear the question but I assume it was ‘Who is the biggest tosser in Australia]

    Puff

Pretty close. It was about which politician said that gospel truth quote.

  3. no complaints sunshine

Have a look back at some of your posts – think you will find you
regularly have *complaints* one way or another.

You are *complaining* about the matter in hand !

  4. Gus @ 649

The media has never been fair and unbiased.

That is just a given we have to deal with. Now, how are we going to do that?

Your calls to “Mad Mike” are one way, and if I could stay awake at that time I might even give it a run myself.

Better communications as pointed to by b_g are another.

  5. bemused

come the MBM cometh the citizen journo

the tight control of information and the narrowcasting of radio/tv will be abolished

flowery prose and lofty ideals are great, at the right time and place

    😉

but to ignore the reality of a one way street is absurd

  6. Your threshold at which an observation or comment becomes a complaint is absurdly low.

sunshine, your own comments apply to you and now you moan and carryon like a sook.

There are 2 aspects, content and presentation.

Poorly presented content is not as effective as the same content well presented.

The first 3 days of the Lib’s election campaign until they got their Campaign HQ were a shambles – but the message still got through.

Whereas the ALP were the complete opposite and they got nil, zip, nada positive coverage.

  9. I will be emailing Mr Xenothon tonight about his vote on the Telstra bill.

I see the Woodside Action Group got publicity in the MSM by sitting in the public gallery during QT and also meeting the rabbott. The oppo’n tossed up a question about them to the PM.

    I’ve seen less milking in a cow-shed.

If I get together a Welcome to Adelaide Asylum Seeker Group, would we get such great publicity, and have the oppo’n ask the PM to meet us?

I don’t recall it as quite that bad but will accept what you say.
The question then is what do you do about it?

Bypass the media completey and use those Printing Allowances to send out out stuff.

    [
AUSTRALIA’S richest woman, Gina Rinehart, has shocked the media industry by taking a 10 per cent stake in Ten Network Holdings.

Ms Rinehart has told the Australian Stock Exchange that she owns 104.6 million Ten shares, making her one of three billionaires to hold a substantial stake in the television and outdoor advertising company.

James Packer picked up an 18 per cent stake in Ten in late October, while WIN TV owner Bruce Gordon recently increased his holding to 14 per cent.

Mr Packer is expected to sell half his stake to News Corporation director Lachlan Murdoch this week.

The combination of Mr Packer, Mr Gordon, Ms Rinehart and Mr Murdoch means Ten has four strongly-opinionated and wealthy shareholders.

  13. I wonder if he wants to be remembered like the democrats the party of the gst i dont remember anything they did except agree with Howard.

How can one person stop this country from modernizing.
surely you would want to have a legacy of caring about Australia’s Future.

  14. Frank @ 668

Good! That is a positive suggestion. And what you and Gus do challenging “Mad Mike” is also worth while.

But in reality, most people get their news from the MSM and I don’t see that changing for a long time yet. Printing allowances will never match it.

The ALP has to do the best it can fighting in the hostile territory of the MSM. You and I and dave and b_g all agree the MSM is hostile. But we cannot just take our bat and ball and go home, we have to do the best we can in dealing with the MSM. We will never get an easy ride there but we can do something to improve our position.

[ Agreed – especially in WA Even though Labor didn’t gain any seats in WA – We held the omes we had. Under Rudd it would’ve been a near total wipeout. ]

You forgot Hasluck, and the notionally Labor Swan. If 3 seats out of 15 isn’t a near-total wipeout, I’m not sure what is.

  21. Alan-Kohler-ABC-News-Finance-Report-Watch update. After the fiasco of some of his recent reports on the Chinese stock market, I note this evening he has taken to stating an “as at time” (5pm AEST) for market moves.

Useful I guess (but completely unrelated to his howler the day when he missed that the Chinese mrket was down 5%)
