Roy Morgan and Essential Research polls

A new federal poll from Roy Morgan records a narrower Labor lead than Newspoll, but an apparently wider gender gap.

Two further polls in the wake of the weekend Newspoll, including voting intention numbers from Roy Morgan and its regularly conducted but irregularly published federal polling series. This shows Labor with a 50.5-49.5 lead on two-party preferred, unchanged from the last such poll a month ago, from primary votes of Coalition 41% (up one), Labor 34.5% (unchanged), Greens 12.5% (down half a point) and One Nation 2.5% (down one). The poll was conducted online and by telephone over the previous two weekends, from a sample of 2747.

The accompanying release takes a deep dive into gender breakdowns in light of recent events, as The Australian did yesterday with recent Newspoll data, which you can read about as an update at the bottom of this post. Whereas The Australian came up empty, Morgan tells us of a 4.3% differential in Coalition two-party preferred between April 2020 and early February (53.5% among men, 49.3% among women), but a 6.2% differential since late February (52.8% among men, 46.5% among women).

There is also the regular fortnightly Essential Research poll which includes the pollster’s monthly reading of leadership ratings. These have Scott Morrison down three on approval to 62% and up one on approval to 29%, Anthony Albanese up one to 41% and down one to 32%, and Morrison’s lead as preferred prime minister narrowing slightly from 52-24 to 52-26.

Concerning recent rape allegations, 37% agree with Scott Morrison’s contention that an inquiry into the Christian Porter matter would “say the rule of law and our police are not competent to deal with these issues”, with 33% disagreeing. Sixty-seven per cent felt it was “time women were believed when they say they have been assaulted”, but 62% also felt that “because the charge of rape is so serious, the burden of proof needs to be high” – a difficult circle to square. Fifty-five per cent felt there needed to be an independent investigation compared with 45% who favoured an alternative proposition that “the police has said they will not be pressing charges and that should be the end of the matter”.

Regular questions on COVID-19 management find federal and state governments recovering ground that most had lost in the previous result a fortnight ago. The federal government’s good rating is up eight to 70% and its poor rating is down two to 12%. For the state governments, New South Wales’ good rating is up three to 75%, Victoria’s is up thirteen to 62%, Queensland is up two to 75%, Western Australia is up six to 91% and South Australia is up to 85%. For the small states especially, caution is required due to small sample sizes (though the WA result may be the highest yet recorded anywhere, which would be neat timing if so).

Also featured is an occasional suite of questions on trust in institutions, which finds 66% expressing a lot of or some trust in state and territory governments, up six points six August, and 72% doing so for border security agencies, up five. Other institutions record little change except the print media, which already rated poorly and is now down four points to 35%. The poll also found 38% support for an aged care levy with 30% opposed. The poll was conducted Wednesday to Monday from a sample of 1124.

Newspoll, Essential and Roy Morgan between them have amounted to a healthy infusion of data for the BludgerTrack poll aggregates, which you can see summarised on the sidebar and in much greater detail here. Labor is now credited with a 51.2-48.8 lead on two-party preferred, following a dead heat when the numbers were last updated three weeks ago.

Just exactly who is calling them ‘Quota Queens’? Morrison? Flint? Payne? Cash? Hunt? Porter? Reynolds?
    WHO?

I can be very convincing, BW. Like, Sean Connery level charisma. I think it’s the Scottish heritage.’

You just creeped me out. And I’m an old-style hetero.

  3. This Flint rant has been carefully orchestrated with the media from the PMO to distract from alleged sex crimes within the government, and the ABC and Nine have been prominent players in this conspiracy against Labor today. The media goons are too stupid to even attempt to hide their roles.

  4. Labor could make an unequivocal commitment to lifting all income support payments above the poverty level (which is 460 to 550 dollars per week for a single person with no kids, depending on which of the three commonly used income poverty lines is used). They could make an unequivocal commitment to full employment policies that keep unemployment at no more than 2 percent, with no underemployment and no hidden unemployment. It isn’t rocket science to do that. The federal government has the power to make it happen. Labor don’t commit to these policies because for forty years they have have been misled by junk economic theories that have had the practical impact of justifying growing inequality and increasingly precarious working conditions.

  5. It is unfortunate indeed that Nicole Flint has been subject to harassment, apparently on at least two occasions. One of the harassers was apparently associated with Getup. She should report these incidents to the Police if she has not already done so.

However, why does she that Labor has a particular responsibility to support her?

    Just ask her…
Ask her where she was when Gillard was being regularly bastardized by Abbott, Hockey and Pyne in the corridors of Parliament House.
Ask her where she was when Ali was being bastardized by the Liberals.
Ask her where she was when Gillard got ‘Bob Brown’s Bitch’.
Ask her where she was on Monday. In Morrison’s Femme Bunker?
The Coalition Loves Women. Pass it on.
Ask her where she was when the Coalition was backgrounding against Higgins.
Ask her where she was when the Murdoch MSM was trashing Porters alleged rape victim.

  7. The Chaser:

‘Big news today out of Canberra as the $190,000 empathy coach hired to teach Scott Morrison to give a damn about other people has received a peace award after he heroically stopped the massacre of over 100,000 peaceful protesters.

“It was hard work but I am glad it all paid off,” said the true blue hero today. “I’m just glad no-one was shot dead for wanting women to not be raped. Anyone with empathy would do the same really – which has me very worried about what Peter Dutton might be up to.”

“Now all we have to work on is the fields of ‘fire victims need help’, ‘old people should be kept in liveable conditions’, ‘refugees are human beings’, ‘women are people too’, ‘unemployed people deserve to not starve to death’, ‘poor people aren’t automatically criminals’, ‘black people shouldn’t be murdered by cops’ and ‘rape is bad’. Other than those Scotty’s doing really well.”’

Labor could…’ do lots of stuff when it is in government. It will NOT win government if it does looney MMT tunes and promise more than it can possibly deliver.
No one knows whether Australia will be in deep Depression in the run up to the next election.
Following the political advice of the extreme left is like importing Corbyn for his political expertise.

In less than two weeks, jobseekers will be hit with income cuts and rental debts. The crisis will remain until the rate is raised. We continue to stand in solidarity with @AusUnemployment and continue the fight for #80aDay #BTPM #RaiseTheRate See you Friday #Narrm

  10. The Greens are politically feasting on the festering bodies of Morrison’s Jobseeker victims like blowflies on a flyblown sheep.
Actually Blowies have 100% integrity. They deliver maggots for their next gen.
    The Greens not so much.

  11. Look, if you need someone to volunteer to have a quiet word to Nicole, I’ll take the job.

  12. Everything that I am hearing about the vaccine rollout indicates that it is a complete dog’s breakfast, with not only the general public but GPs, clinics and agencies not having a clue what’s going on. There’s no excuse – there’s been 6 months plus to plan, even if some details may have had to await the final approval of the vaccines. This includes supply chains and distrubution.

Morrison and other Government spokespeople are blaming “supply chain problems”. Well, maybe, but why should we believe them? Just like how the Fires were caused by arsonists or greenies stopping ‘back-burning’.

A more likely explanation is that the Morrison Government is blitheringly incompetent.

  13. I think it’s fair enough for politicians to ask whether they are receiving enough support from their colleagues when confronted with harrasment and abuse, irrespective of their political affiliation. Our politicians shouldn’t be ignoring what’s going on just because it’s happening to “the other side”, becauise the other side is “fair game”. Certainly that kind of callous ignoring or even enabling of abusing behaviour is something any inquiry into workplace culture should look into.

For example, if someone were to put up a huge sign saying “Bob Brown’s Bitch” and a bunch of politicians decided it was none of their concern because it referred to their political opponent, that would be concerning. Or if someone were to make a reference to rape with a phrase like “no doesn’t really mean no”, and it was shrugged off because it was directed at their political opponent, that would also be concerning.

I’m sure The Coalition would support a look into such attitudes and behaviour being a part of their inquiry into workplace culture, no?

Today in NSW QT I asked the Premier to immediately act to establish an independent complaints process for the NSW Parliament so that people experiencing bullying, sexual harassment and sexual assault have a clear and supported way to report these incidents… (a thread) #nswpol

In her answer, the Premier revealed publicly for the first time that on 18 February she appointed former Liberal Minister Pru Goward to undertake a review of processes and the Speaker then made a statement about this…
I couldn’t leave the final word to him – and his attempts to try to move this debate from public eyes to behind closed doors – so I requested to be able to make a personal explanation (a procedure available to members in the chamber), which he agreed to after QT finished…

  16. The truly disappointing thing for the Greens about Bandt must be that he is not even as cunning as a shithouse rat.
He carries the stench but delivers ….

  17. It’s kind of amusing watching the Labor-Greens shit-show here on PB. Not much really newsworthy going on today then? All is right with the world?

Just a hint to the Labor partisans: when you find boerwar is on your side, it is probably time to rethink your strategy.

  18. There is this doozy from her time at The Advertiser;

Now, there are two ways to deal with these facts (female underrepresentation). There’s the method favoured by the Labor Party that imposes compulsory quotas. Under this system 40 per cent of winnable Labor seats are supposed to be given to women. That’s why Labor women are called ‘Quota Queens’. They’re not there because they are the best candidate, but because they are women.

    POW

This is a classic straw man argument. It implies that gender quotas means any woman is preferable to the best men and that you could just pick some random, unqualified woman off the street and she’d be preferred over a man who meets the requirements. When that is absolutely not true at all. It is a solution to a systemic problem in which men and women are both achieving suitable qualifications for promotion but overwhelmingly and disproportionally male candidates are receiving said promotion over their female rivals.

Is it the best solution? I don’t know but it’s not the lazy straw man that conservatives, MRAs and anti-feminist/SJW types try to paint it as. Same goes for any other demographic quotas.

When I rang my GP today to make a booking the poor girl on reception who answered sounded like my request was one of many she’s had to put on hold due to lack of information from Hunt.

This Govt makes life difficult for so many of its constituents.

I can’t stand these political stunts by the Greens. They only move these amendments because they know they won’t pass- gov’t has the numbers. If the bill was amended in the Senate, unemployed people would get NOTHING. It’s appalling playing politics with people’s lives. #auspol

  24. Let’s face it. The pressure’s off. Morrison and Jen have had the jab. Hunt’s had the jab. Dutton self-innoculated. The announcements have been all used up.
Time to move on to rolling pins, and cubby houses, and pilot caps and asking Jen.

  25. For Labor partisans

Note how idiotic your responses are to a Greens MP helping to support women and specifically pushing workplace safety in parliament

You’re a dark horse, DM. I like it. You do remind that one of life’s little surprises which came after many cunning Bluey episodes, played on the pooter, with the latest two year old grandson on my lap. One of the best things about being a grandfather, but I digress.
The brain flash came when it became clear that Bluey was girl gender.

  28. What happened to Flint was appalling, and she is correct in saying that women’s safety ought to be “above politics”. But her speech, with its echoes of Gillard’s, has very quickly become about just that, and it’s galling to watch someone cry politicisation while engaged in blatant politicisation themselves. (One could say that if the member for Boothby wants to know what partisanship looks like, she doesn’t need a motion, she needs a mirror.) In professing to care about harassment, Flint is attacking the leader who acknowledges the problem within his own party and actually went to Monday’s March 4 Justice, while praising the guy who didn’t. Flint appears to be furious at Labor for condemning the very serious allegations against the Coalition, simply because they didn’t speak up about what happened to her – treatment that may have had less to do with her being a woman and more to do with her hardline conservatism. (It’s important to mention here that the graffitiing of her office was gendered in nature.) As Samantha Maiden noted today, Flint’s original account of what she faced in 2019 didn’t mention the ALP at all. So why now?

Something unacceptable happened to Flint at the 2019 election (I’m beginning to sound like Albanese here myself), but that was not Labor’s fault, and smearing Penny Wong won’t make the allegations against Christian Porter disappear. Crying politicisation won’t change the fact that the allegations currently on the table are all on the right side of politics. For now.

  29. GetUp wasn’t involved. It’s all part of the “blame the lefties” theme.

Right, although I thought that’s what she said. Be that as it may, it’s not clear to me why she is saying Labor needs to support her, as distinct from, say, the Parliament, the Prime Minister or her own party – unless it’s political.

  31. Interesting the man involved with stalking Nicole Flint, Dave Walsh, has also passed away.

Had a FB friend (was one of my old bosses) and we have been going toe to toe regarding this Flint issue – he loved Nicole Flint – early this afternoon, he defriended me on FB. My parting words to him was “that says more about you than it does me”. I have friends and acquaintances that we can rationalise and discuss issues which we don’t mutually agree with however some individuals are just blind.
