Newspoll quarterly breakdowns: April to June

New polling data suggests Labor has held on to big gains it made earlier in the year in Queensland and especially Western Australia.

The Australian has published the regular quarterly aggregation from Newspoll, providing large-sample breakdowns for the mainland states and demographic sub-groups compiled from polling conducted from April through to June. This amounts to a sample of 6049 combined from the last four Newspoll surveys.

The results show little change overall on the previous quarter, with all states recording unchanged two-party results except South Australia. This means a 50-50 result in New South Wales, a swing to Labor of around two points compared with the 2019 election; 53-47 to Labor in Victoria, essentially unchanged; 53-47 to the Coalition in Queensland, a swing to Labor of around 5.5%; 53-47 to Labor in Western Australia, a swing of around 8.5%; and 54-46 to Labor in South Australia, compared with 55-45 in the January-March aggregate and 50.7-49.3 at the 2019 election. The striking fact of this stability is that the surges recorded to Labor last time of five points in Queensland and seven points in Western Australia have stuck.

The demographic breakdowns have been similarly placid, the biggest movements being of three points to the Coalition among the 65+ cohort (to 65-35) and the lower-middle income cohort (to 51-49). There is still no gender gap on two-party preferred, but there is now one on prime ministerial approval, with Morrison’s net rating deteriorating by 12% among women to +15% but by only 5% among men to +21%. Morrison has also held up better in New South Wales, where his net rating is down six to +26%, than in Victoria (down 11 to +6%), Queensland (down 15 to +20%) and Western Australia (down 15 to +22%).

The results also include breakdowns by working status for the first time, which find Labor leading 51-49 lead among those working full time, 54-46 lead among those working part-time and 60-40 among an “other” category that accounts for about 15% of the sample, while the Coalition leads 61-39 among the retired.

  1. I linked this last week.

Leigh sales tweeted this in May. She has been banging on about state govts doing short lockdowns. Of course it didn’t include her own state cos as far as she was concerned, they were gold standard, What a bloody fool

Next time you hear a Premier claim a short term lockdown for a handful of cases has “crushed” the virus – remember that the data so far shows they’re pointless

With a COVID outbreak every 12 days this year, this is how each state responded
Infectious disease experts are calling for a less panicked response to small outbreaks after an analysis revealed two-thirds of the past 17 breaches have been managed without a lockdown.

  2. This talk of Leigh Sales wearing her heart on her sleeve reminds me of this episode…

Breaking bread. A tipster spotted Communications Minister Malcolm Turnbull having dinner with his wife and the ABC’s Leigh Sales and Annabel Crabb last night in Glebe Point Diner, not far from the Ultimo studio where Sales had interviewed Turnbull on 7.30 earlier in the night. While Sales and Turnbull discussed Q&A and where the responsibility lay for hyperbole about Islamic State earlier in the night, who knows what they talked about afterwards …?

While it’s not unusual for senior journalists and politicians to talk regularly, it’s interesting timing, with the government putting pressure on the ABC to move Q&A to the news and current affairs department. Sales told Crikey: “As the anchor of 7.30, I regularly network with a wide range of politicians, business people and other contacts, as any good journalist would.”

The dinner took place while Turnbull should have been preparing for Q&A, but until Prime Minister Tony Abbott lifts the ban on government ministers appearing on the show, it looks like all Coalition frontbenchers can have relaxing Monday night dinners.

Yesterday I posted that the POC players (3) who missed during penalty shoot out of Euro cup may be racially abused and unfortunately it came true.
The coach sent the youngest player (19 years old) and POC to kick last the last goal. Imagine the pressure he would have been. If he had kicked the goal they will continue with shootout or England loose.
    ==============
Southgate’s biggest mistake was to send in Rashford and Sancho, who are both very good penalty takers, at the very end, specifically to take those penalties. Any coach would tell you that you don’t send a cold player into a penalty shootout. He should have sent them in 15-20 minutes earlier and things might have been very different.

My son pointed the samething of what you said but it is not the coach who is receiving the abuse.
Even Prince William is distressed by the racial abuse.

Know what at the time? That is was a five day lockdown. Yes.

Leigh Sales think they are waste of time and don’t work.

    How could anyone know.

You do realise the point of announcing an early short lockdown is to give the authorities an opportunity to get a clearer picture of the situation.

They can either determine it’s under control and start relaxing measures or they can extend the lockdown if it proves to be larger.

You certainly hope it’s only going to be for 5 days, but you have no way of knowing this is going to be the case.

  6. Her smug and superior attitude permeated through the screen when she reported on the hapless Victorian second wave.

Hope she is enjoying cleaning all that egg off her face.

  7. Whatever else may be thriving with Covid, hypocrisy is one of the strongest contenders. The West newspaper (or more correctly now, rebadged as the Harvey Norman) never misses a stroke to stir up political issues. However, today, there is a pathetic editorial piece – a plea no less – that “political point scoring” is not what we need in Oz now…..Given this rag – its editor and owner – are more than happy to “political point score” if it serves their purpose, the hypocrisy beams like a neon light….

I don’t care that Leigh Sales is a liberal luvvie. But her reporting should not be partisan. Where COVID was concerned, it always was.

Now I would like to hear what she has to say about her beloved NSW.

These may be her personal views, that they align with the NSW Government approach doesn’t make her a partisan hack.

Until this outbreak the NSW approach had been as successful as any other State.

QLD implementing Morrison border control on NSW. Hoe ironic!

  18. It is not “hesitancy”. It is desperation, born of marginalised people’s basic needs for survival being ignored.

In sociology and economics, the precariat (/prɪˈkɛəriət/) is a neologism for a social class formed by people suffering from precarity, which means existing without predictability or security, affecting material or psychological welfare. The term is a portmanteau merging precarious with proletariat.

Unlike the proletariat class of industrial workers in the 20th century who lacked their own means of production and hence sold their labor to live, members of the precariat are only partially involved in labor and must undertake extensive unremunerated activities that are essential if they are to retain access to jobs and to decent earnings. Classic examples of such unpaid activities include continually having to search for work (including preparing for and attending job interviews), as well as being expected to be perpetually responsive to calls for “gig” work (yet without being paid an actual wage for being “on call”).

The hallmark of the precariat class is the condition of lack of job security, including intermittent employment or underemployment and the resultant precarious existence. The emergence of this class has been ascribed to the entrenchment of neoliberal capitalism.

  19. Barney, Sales going to the press conference was about as unprofessional an act I have seen from an ABC journo. she either ignored the red flashing lights in her head telling her it wasn’t right, or she didn’t have them. Both are disturbing.

And recently she tweeted a critique of state border closures by comparing them to Canada recently relaxing their international border entry and quarantine rules…. without noting the stark differences (as a journo should) that make the comparison not just useless but blatantly partisan.

She needed the break. I hope she used it to reacquaint herself with her journalistic ethics. I don’t care that she has bias, but her job is to avoid being partisan.

I’m sure you could find supporters of other Parties that disagree with border closures.

  31. Maritime Safety Queensland says three vessels had illegally arrived in the state from greater Sydney in the past two weeks.

Two were single-person yachts while another was a superyacht with four crew aboard.

Six people were each slapped with a $4100 fine and either told to return to NSW or ordered into 14-day hotel quarantine.

Maritime Safety Queensland general manager Angus Mitchell went on ABC radio this morning and warned Sydneysiders that no vessels would be able to slip into the state undetected.

We do know all the vessels that are coming in … whether you’re in a superyacht, it’s very hard to sneak anywhere in a superyacht, but even if you’re in a small sailing vessel we will detect you.

What most experts can agree on is that the United Kingdom is about to embark on a country-wide experiment in gain-of-function research. By abolishing all public health restrictions with just half of the population fully vaccinated, the UK could produce new variants that evade vaccine-induced immunity.
