Newspoll quarterly breakdowns: April to June

New polling data suggests Labor has held on to big gains it made earlier in the year in Queensland and especially Western Australia.

The Australian has published the regular quarterly aggregation from Newspoll, providing large-sample breakdowns for the mainland states and demographic sub-groups compiled from polling conducted from April through to June. This amounts to a sample of 6049 combined from the last four Newspoll surveys.

The results show little change overall on the previous quarter, with all states recording unchanged two-party results except South Australia. This means a 50-50 result in New South Wales, a swing to Labor of around two points compared with the 2019 election; 53-47 to Labor in Victoria, essentially unchanged; 53-47 to the Coalition in Queensland, a swing to Labor of around 5.5%; 53-47 to Labor in Western Australia, a swing of around 8.5%; and 54-46 to Labor in South Australia, compared with 55-45 in the January-March aggregate and 50.7-49.3 at the 2019 election. The striking fact of this stability is that the surges recorded to Labor last time of five points in Queensland and seven points in Western Australia have stuck.

The demographic breakdowns have been similarly placid, the biggest movements being of three points to the Coalition among the 65+ cohort (to 65-35) and the lower-middle income cohort (to 51-49). There is still no gender gap on two-party preferred, but there is now one on prime ministerial approval, with Morrison’s net rating deteriorating by 12% among women to +15% but by only 5% among men to +21%. Morrison has also held up better in New South Wales, where his net rating is down six to +26%, than in Victoria (down 11 to +6%), Queensland (down 15 to +20%) and Western Australia (down 15 to +22%).

The results also include breakdowns by working status for the first time, which find Labor leading 51-49 lead among those working full time, 54-46 lead among those working part-time and 60-40 among an “other” category that accounts for about 15% of the sample, while the Coalition leads 61-39 among the retired.

  1. Victoria is going to have some restrictions re introduced.
Including masks in all settings apart from home.
    Limiting visitors into home.
Not sure of what else at this stage.
But I dare say if things escalate, they will do what they call another circuit breaker.

  2. That segment on RN breakfast on Israel’s vaccination program was very good. Do go find it.

Revealing the lengths they went to get Pfizer early. Compare and contrast to our imposter PM.

  3. Morning all. Thanks BK. Good luck to Sydney and Melbourne getting the Gladys Outbreak under control.

Like others I have to assume NSW avoiding defining “essential” is a deliberate communication strategy if Hazzard and Gladys are both doing it. I don’t see how it will shift the blame from them though. Strange times.

  4. If you are relying on the head of the armed services from stopping a shark infested political party from taking autocratic rule; then your democracy is a girl on a bouy.

  5. Victoria records 10 locally acquired cases of COVID-19 cases, all known yesterday

Victoria recorded 10 new cases of COVID-19 yesterday, the state’s health department has confirmed.

Seven of those cases were announced by authorities at yesterday’s press conference, and the ABC reported a further three throughout the afternoon.

The infections were detected from 27,061 test results processed on Wednesday.

The rapid escalation of the outbreak prompted mask rules to be tightened from midnight, and further restrictions are expected to be introduced later today.

The fact that this thing has had four generations of transmission in six days shows just how fast Delta is moving. We had the removalists, who passed it on to the man in his 60s, who gave it to the teacher, who gave it to his family, all between Thurs last week & yesterday.

  8. Personal story.

I moved house during the height of the 1st Wave of Covid-19, in August 2020. I hired the cheapest Removalists I could find due to being funds-limited. They turned up, no masks. English was their second language and I just couldn’t spend the time explaining why they should have worn masks, and anyway, at that time Australia wasn’t exactly at the front of the queue for mask supply either and we were on the clock so couldn’t really spare the time to go buy some So my son and I just wore our masks and hoped for the best.

The Amazon rainforest is now emitting more carbon dioxide than it is able to absorb, scientists have confirmed for the first time. The emissions amount to a billion tonnes of carbon dioxide a year, according to a study. The giant forest had previously been a carbon sink, absorbing the emissions driving the climate crisis, but is now causing its acceleration, researchers said.

    poroti,
And the management were on cordon bleu salaries I bet!

In one of them it sure was, bonanza time for annual bonuses. One of the ‘good guys’ in management and there were many good ones showed us all the bonuses paid each year 🙂 The company initially used the visa system 100% correctly in order to get several specialist workers in for a project. There really were virtually zero in Australia in the field and our overseas branches had them.
At the end of the project several wanted to stay in Australia permanently. The only jobs available within the company were ones requiring lower qualifications and pay. They took them. That was when ‘the management’ discovered the joy of hiring A Team ‘visa people’ paying them B Team salaries and using them to win and do A Team contracts that brought in A Team $s . Management in our division were off and racing then, as were their annual bonuses.

  13. We all know that Morrison is both incompetent and extremely sensitive about his incompetence.
He is now in the thrashing wildly stage of denial.
Morrison is defending quarantine as 99.9% successful.
    He has dissed medical expertise.
    He has attacked Victoria.

The main thing is that the shops are still open and that essential workers are still milling about doing economic activity.

  17. More mendacious efforts at undermining climate action from platinum corporate member of the Labor and Liberal parties of Australia

Along with the Labor and Liberal party sponsors Minerals Council and Santos

So interesting that the Labor and Liberal parties go so far out of their way to protect the MCA and other fossil fuel interests from being questioned in parliament

No wonder the PB Labor cabal are so reticent to really talk about the Australian state capture by carbon club interests

Climate denial still features in fossil fuel-funded education materials
    https://reneweconomy.com.au/climate-denial-still-features-in-fossil-fuel-funded-education-materials/

In their ‘Greenhouse effect’ educational materials, the Woodside-labelled PDFs both implicitly and explicitly cast doubt on the firmly established science of climate change. It declares, for instance, in a question-and-answer section, that

“The “Enhanced Greenhouse Effect” or recent rapid warming of our atmosphere is the result of human/anthropogenic activities such as burning fossil fuel and industry (a point of some debate)”

It also asks students, “Why should we be grateful that there are “greenhouse gasses” in our atmosphere?”, offering the answer: “Greenhouse gasses keep the surface of this planet warm enough to support life”. True, but really, you’re missing the point there, Woodside. It’s an insidious framing reminiscent of Tony Abbott’s ‘plant food‘.

Woodside’s educational materials also included worksheets specifically about the “enhanced greenhouse effect”. It does not mention fossil fuels, coal, oil or gas, but focuses solely on methane produced by farming activities. It also includes an entire section on ‘Milankovitch cycles‘, a real phenomenon but also a popular and notable climate change denier meme that was touted as an alternative explanation to the recent warming observed.

  19. Quoll

Well, der. Of course a company producing ‘educational literature’ focuses on making it look good.

If it’s any consolation, teachers rarely use these kinds of education packs. From memory, in over thirty years of teaching, I’ve only used two – one on Work Place Safety and one on Disaster Management.

I can’t see how you connect their production to the evils of teh major parties, but I suppose to a hammer everything looks like a nail.

  20. One of the features of China’s foreign ‘aid’ is that it involves lots of Chinese workers actually doing the work. This can breed local resentment. In Pakistan local resentment can be fatal.

I am not sure what has happened here. The China side came in wolf warrior snarling on it being a bomb initially but now seems to be backpeddling to a softer line.

Yes that’s true. Some Morrison Hysteria ads would be a good move. Hysterical, angry and Shouty. That needs to be how Labor depicts him.

  22. Jacqui Lambie puts the blame squarely on the responsible government:

Crossbench Senator Jacqui Lambie was speaking on the Today show earlier this morning.

Here’s what she had to say about the situation Victoria is facing this morning:

“Those bloody poor Victorians, I tell you. They must have had a gutful … to be honest with you.

“We have to get those vaccines moving. People are at the end of their tether. A lot more people wanting to step up to the plate to get those vaccines. It has been bungled the whole way through. They [the federal government] should have had the mRNA ones and I have gone and got my shot. I did that about two weeks ago.

Locally produced mRNA vaccine won’t be available until at least 2023
“I thought for goodness sake for the sake of the elderly down here in Tasmania I will bite the bullet. What really annoys me the younger kids will have to … get the AstraZeneca because we seem to have a heap of them, and line up and do that. We know that that Delta variant really bites. So do they risk taking AstraZeneca to get that availability or do they wait and see whether they catch the Delta strain?

“It is just really not a nice morning. Eighteen months to get their crap together up there in Parliament and still it’s a mess, mate. Absolute mess.”

  23. Pretty unsurprising to see that it is pretty much only the Labor and Liberal parties who are against the Zali Steggal bill as well.

Stated as comparable to the climate policy of both the UK (conservative govt) and NZ (Labor/Greens govt) policies and supported by business, unions, environment groups, the cross bench and pretty much anyone with any brains and knowledge of what is required, as far better than anything Australia currently has going or on the table.

Yet both the major parties just squib it at best. Weasel words from Labor about debate, but frankly too gutless and pathetic to say they support real action, with the same pathetic ‘targets’ as the LNP.

No doubt the PB Labor cabal will run the same idiotic lines about extremist Greens, supporting a policy that pretty much anyone with brains across the political spectrum thinks is better than the shit Australia is currently running with.

All whilst both the major parties takes millions in sponsorship from the carbon club and trades in sinecures for post parliamentary positions. Just so more fracking and mining and ecological destruction can be done.

Committee rejects Steggall’s climate bills, but rebel Liberals call for net zero by 2050

Does, ‘unreasonable’ get past the self-appointed censors? As in, not able to be reasoned with.

Your story about the removalists reminds me that low-paid workers and people who move around a lot are the most unlikely to take any notice of Gladys and her “please use your own judgement”. I know that’s obvious, but Gladys seems to aim her pleas more towards her own “class”.

It is not the first time Ms Zou — who made headlines in 2017 after setting up a company called the ‘Julie Bishop Glorious Foundation’ — has donated to the political party.

In 2018, another company owned by Ms Zou, AusGold Mining, donated a smaller sum of $31,788.88.

I believe they stick to the social media sites in their first language and it’s why all governments should translate and disseminate all their messages across every social media platform and site they can find.

Greens defence policy: strip the ADF to nothing and tell Xi to study peace studies.
Greens regional policy: kill regional economies.
Greens Indigenous policy deliver: 30 years of zip.

Jan 6 is the moment in History of USA the bandage has been ripped open and the gaping wound is now in open, bleeding and exposed to elements
Before that the US politicians and people said that they were only few bad apples although those bad apples in large numbers were hiding in plain sight.
The biggest example is the gun violence and resulting mass shootings, which was happening for a longtime.

  32. Haven’t seen many comments re ‘Ms Represented’ , the excellent ABC series available on Iview.
What struck me was how similar male Parliamentarians were to what I experienced in the corporate world in the 80/90’s. The ‘not being listened to’ but then find they claimed your ideas as theirs. No credit where due.
‘Carpet strollers’ who brown-nosed while others did the hard yards.

  33. Ven,
One of the major motivations for Donald Trump to beat Joe Biden was that he thought Joe Biden was ‘a moron’ and he didn’t want to lose to ‘a moron’.

Well, Donald Trump is a dangerous fool and that’s a lot worse.
