Resolve Strategic: Labor 39, Coalition 32, Greens 10 (open thread)

A dent to Labor’s still commanding lead from Resolve Strategic, as it and Essential Research disagree on the trajectory of Anthony Albanese’s personal ratings.

The Age/Herald has published the second of what hopefully looks like being a regular monthly federal polling series, showing Labor down three points on the primary vote 39%, the Coalition up four to 32%, the Greens down two to 10%, One Nation up one to 6% and the United Australia Party steady on 2%. Based on preferences from the May election, this suggests a Labor two-party lead of 57-43, in from 61-39 last time. Anthony Albanese’s combined good plus very good rating is down one to 60% and his poor plus very poor rating is up two to 24%. Peter Dutton is respectively down two to 28% and up three to 40%, and his deficit on preferred prime minister has narrowed from 55-17 to 53-19.

The poll also finds 54-46 support for retaining the monarchy over becoming a republic in the event of a referendum, reversing a result from January. The late Queen’s “time as Australia’s head of state” was rated as good by 75% and poor by 5%, while David Hurley’s tenure as Governor-General was rated good by 30% and poor by 13%, with the remainder unsure or neutral. Forty-five per cent expect that King Charles III will perform well compared with 14% for badly. The poll was conducted Wednesday to Sunday from a sample of 1607.

Also out yesterday was the regular fortnightly release from Essential Research, which features the pollster’s monthly leadership ratings, though still nothing on voting intention. Its new method for gauging leadership invites respondents introduced last month is to rate the leaders on a scale from zero to ten, categorising scores of seven to ten as positive, zero to three as negative and four to six as neutral. Contra Resolve Strategic, this has Albanese’s positive rating up three to 46%, his negative rating down six to 17% and his neutral rating up three to 31%. Dutton’s is down three on positive to 23%, steady on negative at 34% and up four on negative to 34%.

The poll also gauged support for a republic, and its specification of an “Australian head of state” elicited a more positive response than for Resolve Strategic or Roy Morgan, with support at 43% and opposition at 37%, although this is the narrowest result from the pollster out of seven going back to January 2017, with support down one since June and opposition up three. When asked if King Charles III should be Australia’s head of state, the sample came down exactly 50-50. The late Queen posthumously records a positive rating of 71% and a negative rating of 8% and Prince William comes in at 64% and 10%, but the King’s ratings of 44% and 21% are only slightly better than those of Prince Harry at 42% and 22%. The September 22 public holiday has the support of 61%, but 48% consider the media coverage excessive, compared with 42% for about right and 10% for insufficient. The poll was conducted Wednesday to Monday from a sample of 1075.

The weekly Roy Morgan federal voting intention result, as related in threadbare form in its weekly update videos, gives Labor a lead of 54.5-45.5, out from 53.5-46.5 and the pollster’s strongest result for Labor since the election.

Finally, some resolution to recent by-election coverage:

• Saturday’s by-election for the Western Australian state seat of North West Central produced a comfortable win for Nationals candidate Merome Beard in the absence of a candidate from Labor, who polled 40.2% in the March 2021 landslide and fell 1.7% short after preferences. Beard leads Liberal candidate Will Baston with a 9.7% margin on the two-candidate preferred count, although the Nationals primary vote was scarcely changed despite the absence of Labor, while the Liberals were up from an abysmal 7.9% to 26.7%. The by-elections other remarkable feature was turnout – low in this electorate at the best of times, it currently stands at 42.2% of the enrolment with a mere 4490 formal votes cast, down from 73.8% and 7741 formal votes in 2021, with likely only a few hundred postals yet to come. Results have not been updated since Sunday, but continue to be tracked on my results page.

• A provisional distribution of preferences recorded Labor candidate Luke Edmunds winning the Tasmanian Legislative Council seat of Pembroke by a margin of 13.3%, out from 8.7% when the electorate last went to polls in May 2019. Labor’s primary vote was down from 45.2% to 39.5% in the face of competition from the Greens, who polled a solid 19.3% after declining to contest last time, while the Liberals were up to 28.8% from 25.3% last time, when a conservative independent polled 18.4%.

  1. President Kennett just happens to be O/S when the kaka hits the fan. How lucky is that?

But the Acting President has reported that the real President has reported that he knew nadjing* – except got maybe the bit about making a mocking comment about torn jeans to Rioli’s wife and for which he has already made one mealy-mouthed apology.

Everybody in the Happy Family AT Hawthorn is reported to be ‘devastated’.

Acting-President somebody or other is taking the presser heat. I do not wish to be bodyist but an ageing, bald, glass-wearing white man with a down turned mouth is possibly not your best front man at this stage in the proceedings. Prejudiced of me? For sure! Always remember: we should not be prejudiced!
Not to worry. He knew nadjing.
Sam Mitchell is reported to have reported that he, too, knew nadjing.
    Everybody seems to know nadjing.
    The current Board knew nadjing.
The previous Board members knew nadjing.
    The CEO knew nadjing.
Fagan and Clarkson were not asked by the rapporteur so were not even in a position to say that THEY knew nadjing.
Mr McLachlan has announced that the AFL will appoint an investigation team to be led by a KINGS Counsel!!!!! Immediately. Very up to date!
But there may be a problem.
The peeps making the allegations in the Report have been de-identified and their confidentiality has been guaranteed. So nobody knows who THEY are either. Except maybe themselves.

*In honour of Pitjantjatjara users of Aboriginal English I have used the common Pitjantjatjara English term of ‘nadjing’ for ‘nothing’. But, then, what would I know, other than that it was a word I learned very early on when learning Pitjantjatjara. Little did I realize how useful that little word would become!

    300,000 troops to be mobilized.

“By my exceedingly rough calculations, Russia has around 20 million men in the 18-45 age group.”

Sounds like a war to me, I wonder if the Russian public are excited? I knew Putin would need to go big and go fast or go home, seems he is choosing the former.

I hope that wasn’t a reference to the ‘car crash’ that was reported as an attack on Putin ? There was a car crash that day involving a President but……

Trouble is, if Putin were to, say, accidentally fall out of a 10th floor window, would he be replaced by someone worse?

I wouldn’t be surprised if he somehow ‘accidentally’ falls out of a window in the next few weeks, but I would think that it could not get worse. If there is pressure to ‘let him fall’, it is due to a drop in profits for some of the fat cats. They will want trade to resume…

  5. Steve777 at 5:59 pm
Probably. There haves been a lot of people in Russia screaming for Putin to stop fluffing around and go in hard. People like the chap the late Bludger CTar1 bumped into (accidentally I’m sure ;).) and ended up having a chat with at a UK airport. The former PM + President Dmitry Medvedev. He used to be a pretty pro West sounding guy but he seems to have reinvented himself as a real hawk. He’d be eyeing up his chances of taking Vlad’s place.

And a covid Italy update, 60 dead today. They are however very big on masks on public transport (mandated) and it’s fully supported by the public and strongly policed, go figure.

  7. This is statement from Alistair Clarkson

The matters raised are now with the AFL’s Integrity Unit and Alastair welcomes the opportunity to co-operate with any investigation relating to the claims.

Clarkson himself also released a statement, saying he was “shocked” by the allegations.

“I was not interviewed by the authors of the report commissioned by the Club, and nor have I been provided with a copy of the report,” he said.

“I was not afforded any due process and I refute any allegation of wrongdoing or misconduct and look forward to the opportunity to be heard as part of the AFL external investigation.”

  8. What a depressing day all round.

Regarding the Hawthorn FC… this is going to get very ugly, very quickly. A friend of mine has a good friend who worked at the club and had raised numerous issues around bullying and harassment which were essentially ignored by the executive. They essentially said the fish rots from the head.

They have now lawyered up and seeking further advice as are others.

When asked what a suitable penalty would be … for starters a 12 month suspension of the club from all forms of the competition effectively immediately. Followed by …

  9. C@tmomma at 6:24 pm
Which one ? I mentioned the car crash as Ze’s car crash was initially mischievously reported online as a Putin car crash that was an attempt on his life.

  10. I note Clarkson and Fagan used the form of words “was not interviewed” without saying if they were offered the opportunity of an interview.

Will be interesting to see how it plays out.

An actual press attaché for the Kremlin is now posting: “The third world war has been moved to tomorrow (Wednesday), you can go to bed. See you tomorrow in the same place.” We assume that’s Russia’s idea of a joke. Maybe.”

  15. Those allegations about Hawthorn are just awful. How does this shit happen in this day and age when we supposedly know better?!

Three families involved told ABC Sport about incidents in which club staff allegedly bullied and removed First Nations players from their homes and relocated them elsewhere, telling them to choose between their careers and their families.

In some cases, coaches allegedly coerced at least two players to remove SIM cards from their phones and insert new ones in attempts to cut them off from their partners and focus them entirely on the club’s pursuit of football success. In each case, the player was a young First Nations draftee in his first five years with the club.

But the gravest accusations relate to the club’s alleged intimidation tactics to separate couples at the earliest stages of pregnancies and parenthood, and the alleged demand that one player should instruct his partner to terminate a pregnancy — actions the families say created multi-generational traumas.

    poroti,
Could be that. It’s hard to pin down the truth in the fog of war.

Indeed. The initial coverage of it was strange. Perhaps there was an attempt on the life of the president , just not that of Vlad.

    ——————————–
It seems to me reasonably clear that there were not asked to comment.
The official story from Hawthorn management is that they were concerned with the post-career welfare of players and families so they engaged an Indigenous person to talk to them to find out how things were going and whether they needed ongoing support.
In this scenario there was no need for the rapporteur to talk to anybody but ex players and their families.
The official story continues that Hawthorn management was surprised and devastated by the horrifying allegations that the rapporteur carried back to them.
The upshot of all of the above, if correct, is that Clarkson, Fagan, and at least one other Hawthorn employee, whose name I have forgotten, have had some terrible allegations publicly canvased about them without their having had the least opportunity to reply.

  18. What a great man!

I remember back in the late 70s when a new chicken shop opened near us, he was my first encounter with chicken salt.

He had a mini pinball/video game arcade attached to the shop, so we’d sometimes go there after school. His chips and gravey with chicken salt were to die for.

I ensured our family became regular customers.

The shop’s no longer there, but a few years ago I went into a chicken shop up in Blackwood and the owner recognised me and told me he was that original owner from my childhood.

    Small world, good memories. 🙂

  20. Just read Jonathan Green’s story about the Hawthorn allegations in The Monthly Today. I was shocked to my core, especially when he alluded to who the most egregious allegations may have been about, as the victim.
If someone could link it or quote from it I would appreciate it as I am on my phone presently.

Stuff suppurates. Seethes under a thin crust. Two things can happen: you either keep layering on new crusts to keep it down, or the fetid, roiling reality breaks through the surface. 24. Interesting on 7:30 tonight that the option of buying French SSN’s is getting some kind of run?? 🙂

Have been doing a bit of reading around the media as to Big Bad Vlad’s speech. He seems to be talking about another 300,000 or so troops via reserves (people with prior military training) and conscripts.

Fine, but they will all need at least some training, some quite a lot. Reported in ISW (a fairly reputable site as far as these things go i think ) that the Russians have been stripping out their training units and academies over the last few months to provide combat unit replacements. Not a good situation for the Russians if they want to get anything other than cannon fodder into the field.

Makes a bit of sense if you consider reports all through this war that the Russians have lost a lot their mid level and junior officers.

I think Putin’s speech is mainly directed at the Russian population and speaks to real worries that they are going to jack up over this. Duma has passed increase punishments for a lot of things including criminalizing surrender in combat. Shite…if the Ukrainians don’t treat ethnic Russian common grunts badly, they may end up with quite a few recruits out of this. 🙁

The nuke threat is pretty blatant. 🙁 Dangerous, but i suspect the NATO response will be, properly i think, a simple affirmation of no first use and leave the rest ambiguous.

Belarusian response will be interesting. Maybe the Poles will start eyeing them off across the border and effectively pin them in place?? NATO ground forces almost have to at least quietly increase their readiness after Putin’s bluster today. 🙁

  25. One-way flights out of Russia were selling out fast on Wednesday after President Vladimir Putin ordered the immediate call-up of 300,000 reservists.
Putin’s announcement, made in an early-morning television address, raised fears that some men of fighting age would not be allowed to leave Russia.
Defence minister Sergei Shoigu said the call-up would be limited to those with experience as professional soldiers, and that students and those who had only served as conscripts would not be called up.
Nevertheless, Google Trends data showed a spike in searches for Aviasales, which is Russia’s most popular website for purchasing flights.
Direct flights from Moscow to Istanbul in Turkey and Yerevan in Armenia, both destinations that allow Russians to enter without a visa, were sold out on Wednesday, according to Aviasales data.

  26. One of my soulmates used nadjing. Just listening to Betts on AFL 360. Asked whether he believed the allegations he said he believes his brothers. His reasoning was statistical. ‘It happens all the time. It happens everywhere.’
60 years after Perkins’ busloads were being thrown out of public pools Betts was asked to leave the water in a public pool. He was holding a couple of his kids at the time. ‘I don’t feel like I belong here (ie in Australia). I know an Indigenous player who is a non drinker. He has been stopped 8 times by traffic cops.

NATO, which obviously includes the Americans, have been doing live training exercises in Poland since the Russian invasion of Ukraine began. They are as prepared as the could be for Putin to go postal.

  29. Latvia has declared that they will not be accepting Russian refugees from conscription. Probably because they’ve seen that those Russian refugees form enclaves which gives leaders like Putin his causus bellum to invade.
