As it usually does on Boxing Day, The Australian has published quarterly aggregates of Newspoll with state and demographic breakdowns, on this occasion casting an unusually wide net from its polling all the way back to July to early this month, reflecting the relative infrequency of its results over this time. The result is a combined survey of 5771 respondents that finds Labor leading 55-45 in New South Wales (a swing of about 3.5% to Labor compared with the election), 57-43 in Victoria (about 2%), 55-45 in Western Australia (no change) and 57-43 in South Australia (a 4.0% swing), while trailing 51-49 in Queensland a 3% swing).
Gender breakdowns show only a slight gap, with Labor leading 54-46 among men and 56-44 among women, with the Greens as usual stronger among women among men. Age cohort results trend from 65-35 to Labor for 18-to-34 to 54-46 to the Coalition among 65-plus, with the Greens respectively on 24% and 3%. Little variation is recorded according to education or income, but Labor are strongest among part-time workers and weakest among the retired, stronger among non-English speakers but well ahead either way, and 62-38 ahead among those identifying as of no religion but 53-47 behind among Christians. You can find all the relevant data, at least for voting intention, in the poll data feature on BludgerTrack.

China’s game with Russia is that if Russia wins they’re friends with the winning side and the West is weakened and looks less able to resist invasion of Taiwan = China gains, while if Russia loses they are poised to make Russia their client state = China gains.
Always play a game with no losing outcomes if you can.
That’s the theory anyway.

Eurovision gets it: this is no time to resume “shaking hands” with Russia on any stage:
“The Eurovision chief has said Russia’s ongoing ban from the international song contest has been hard but the event should stand for “the basic and ultimate values of democracy”.
Russia was banned from competing in the Eurovision song contest in 2022 after its invasion of Ukraine. Russia’s national broadcasters subsequently suspended their memberships of the European Broadcasting Union, which organises the show, preventing them from taking part in future contests.”

Let’s not forget the Ukrainian partisans operating behind enemy lines under Russia’s brutal occupation:
“Kherson was liberated because Ukraine forced Russians to accept they could not hold the city with their dwindling supplies and growing body count.
Part of that was achieved by Ukrainian forces running the Russians ragged, continuously destroying their supply lines and command centers.
But an important role was also played by people who were inside Kherson during the occupation.
From sending targeting coordinates to assassinating ranking Russians and collaborators, Ukrainian informants and partisans made sure that the invaders never got too comfortable.”

Together with Basel (Bank for International Settlements), Geneva (United Nations), The Hague (International Court of Justice) and New York City (United Nations world headquarters), Strasbourg is among the few cities in the world that is not a state capital that hosts international organisations of the first order.[10]

The omicron subvariant XBB.1.5 has rapidly spread to become the dominant COVID-19 mutation in the U.S., now accounting for 40.5 percent of all cases.
The XBB.1.5 omicron subvariant as of this week has pushed out the BQ.1 and the BQ.1.1 subvariants from their previous positions as the most detected coronavirus mutations, according to surveillance conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
This XBB subvariant, from which XBB.1.5 descends, is a recombinant of two subvariants that descended from the BA.2 omicron subvariant. This means it carries genetic data from two versions of the coronavirus that originated from the BA.2 subvariant.
Regionally, XBB.1.5 now accounts for the majority of COVID-19 cases in the northeast, identified as causing 75 percent of cases in New England and in the New York tri-state area.
The omicron subvariants XBB and XBB.1 were first identified in India. Some scientists, including Scripps Research Institute professor of molecular medicine Eric Topol, have put forward the possibility that XBB.1.5 could have mutated in New York.
A preliminary analysis of Trump’s taxes by Congress’ brain trust on tax issues, the Joint Committee on Taxation, found that the former president paid little to no taxes for several years by claiming mammoth business losses. Trump paid $750 in 2016 and 2017 and paid nothing in 2020, JCT said.
Among the items outlined by JCT are several red flags that could change the amount of taxes Trump ends up owing once the IRS completes ongoing audits. Despite the release of the returns, significant questions may still go unanswered, Steve Rosenthal of the nonpartisan Tax Policy Center said.
Huge losses that Trump claimed to lower his taxes seemingly originate in earlier tax years and still have not been cleared by the IRS, making it difficult to assess their legitimacy, Rosenthal said.
Trump carried forward $105 million in losses to 2015 and brought $73 million in losses to 2016, but those likely stem from the stunning $700 million loss that The New York Times has reported Trump claimed on his 2009 return, among other potential losses, Rosenthal said.
The “elephant in the room” is those earlier returns that were not ultimately subject to the Ways and Means scrutiny.m“That’s critical, but the committee failed to ask for it,” Rosenthal said.
Trump claimed his returns reflect the actions of a shrewd businessman. “The ‘Trump’ tax returns once again show how proudly successful I have been and how I have been able to use depreciation and various other tax deductions as an incentive for creating thousands of jobs and magnificent structures and enterprises,” he said in his email.

Trump hints he may split from GOP, dooming their 2024 election chances
Former President Donald Trump has shared an article suggesting that he should run as a third-party candidate if the Republican Party doesn’t choose him as its nominee for the 2024 presidential election.
Trump shared the article, entitled “The Coming Split,” on his Truth Social page. The article asked, “What should we do when a majority of Republicans want Trump, but the Republican Party says we can’t have him?”
“The Republican machine has no intention of letting us choose Trump again,” the article stated. “He is not a uniparty team player. They’d rather lose an election to the Democrats, their brothers in crime, than win with Trump.”

Why did the Seats with strong Chinese/Hong Kong expatriate numbers swing to Labor at the last election – noting the concerted efforts of the Liberal Party to embrace this community?
There are numerous China/Australia organisations in Australia embracing trade and cultural engagement

Yeah, I thought something like that might be the case too. However, increasingly being exposed to the lengths Putin goes to, plus he is Young Liberal President, is a pretty sound basis for suspicion. 😉
‘Why did the Seats with strong Chinese/Hong Kong expatriate numbers swing to Labor at the last election – noting the concerted efforts of the Liberal Party to embrace this community?’
The Libs may have embraced the community – although there’s little evidence of it – but they were quite cheerfully insulting anything to do with China.
This may not have been directed at Chinese living in Australia, but it didn’t make their lives here easier.
They also did nothing to counter the vile slurs made against the Chinese during the pandemic. My socials were filled with accusations that Chinese were the ones buying up all the toilet paper and shipping it to China, turning up by the busload at country supermarkets and buying out all the goods, etc etc.
I would also think that, if I were Chinese, revelations that the Liberals had fed Chinese voters false information by masquerading as the AEC would not fill me with trust.

Morning all. Thanks Cat for the roundup. And a happy New Years (eve) to everyone.
2022 ends as a strange year for me. Its been a terrible year worldwide, with a major war in Ukraine and minor wars in multiple African and mid-eastern countries, plus floods here and climate and food shortage crises elsewhere.
Yet we got a profound change for the good in Australian politics, along with other democracies, and a reminder that progressive politics is not dead, and is still relevant to many deep problems. Plus a politicised younger generation, that is important for the future.
For me Albo is Australia’s man of the year by many kilometres. He has hardly put a foot wrong. On the rare occasions he did he corrected himself quickly and moved on.
Albo has worked incredibly hard, from before the campaign, through the election, into governing with huge amounts of travel and repair work on international relations, while still managing some huge wins in parliament too.
Even this week, when most journos are on holidays, he went to Woodford to promote the Voice with Linda Burnie. The Cabinet team have also been terrific. The polls reflect the broad satisfaction with the leader and the team. Long may it continue.
Thanks to William for his patience and providing this island of free media commentary in a sea of muzzled debate. Thanks to all bludgers for tolerance of my too frequent rants over submarines, one of Scomo’s many great lies.
#WeatheronPB. It’s mild and cloudy in Sydney, as is has been most mornings for the past 14 months. The Sun is trying to break through.
The rainfall account for 2022 has closed. Sydney finished the year with a rainfall of 2,530 mm, 99.6” in the old money. This is over double the average and a new high in 164 years of record. It didn’t just pip the old record, set in 1950, it smashed it, shading it by over 15%. That is very unusual for such a long-standing record.
That was one crappy year for weather. May we never see its like again.
Dimitry Chugg-Palmer seems to be saying that they lost the election because they had the wrong policies (sorry, blaming Morrison for selling what the party’s product was doesn’t change the nature of the product) but that’s OK, they’ll change them.
He seems to avoid the question of why the party, espousing the values he claims, ended up with the ‘wrong’ policies.
He talks about listening to the community, which is laudable. But it depends who in the community you listen to, and how you interpret what you’re hearing.
The Liberals have been listening the community. They have based their policies on what they heard. They have been putting Liberal values into practice.
It’s more that they’ve been listening to a part of the community which is not representative of the majority.
