The Age/Herald brings the monthly Resolve Strategic poll of federal voting intention, which has Labor down two on the primary vote to 40%, the Coalition up two to 31%, the Greens down one to 10% and One Nation down one to 5%. No two-party preferred is reported, but this would pan out to around 58-42 based on preference flows from last year, in from around 60-40 last time. Anthony Albanese’s approval rating (very good plus good) is down four on last month to 56%, with disapproval (very poor plus poor) up five to 30%; Peter Dutton is up one to 29% and down one to 45%; and Anthony Albanese’s lead over Peter Dutton as preferred prime minister is 55-23, in from 55-20. The poll was conducted Wednesday to Sunday from a sample of 1604. Further results published today including a finding that 50% expect economic conditions to worsen over the coming year, compared with 18% for improvement and 24% for staying the same.
The fortnightly Essential Research poll, which does not exclude undecided from its voting intention numbers, has Labor at 33% and the Coalition at 30% on the primary vote, both unchanged on a fortnight ago. The Greens are down three from an anomalous peak last time to 14% and One Nation are steady on 6%, with undecided at 8%. The 2PP+ measure had Labor down four to 51%, the Coalition up two to 42% and undecided up three to 8%. As noted in the previous post, Anthony Albanese’s approval is down two on a month ago to 53%, and his disapproval is up three to 34%. The full report, featuring questions on economic issues and interest rate rises, is here.
The Victorian Liberal Party’s administrative committee has as expected endorsed barrister Roshena Campbell as its candidate for the April 1 Aston by-election. Paul Sakkal of The Age reports Campbell received 13 votes, with former state upper house MP Cathrine Burnett-Wake and oncologist Ranjana Srivastava on three each.

Albo is at pains to tell everyone how powerless the Voice to parliament will be.
That’s the big part of the problem re the lack of self-determination..
Only truth and treaty will address this.

Indeed Rex. One imagines that truth and treaty will be top of the agenda for the Voice, once it is elected. In fact, that’s what the Uluru Statement from the Heart called for: Voice, Truth and Treaty in that order.
But I guess honouring the stated wishes of Indigenous Australians is less exciting than following loud-mouths like Lidia Thorpe, with all their shouting and performance-based politics.

I understand intrastate planes will use Badgery’s Creek

So if I fly from Melbourne to Newcastle, I would fly to Mascot then catch a bus to Badgery’s Creek to catch a Newcastle plane. The bus journey airport to airport would take 2 hours?, the train takes 2.5 hours”

At 4:55 pm yesterday afternoon, Tanya Plibersek approved another Santos fracking project to go ahead in Queensland’s Surat Basin. No announcement or fanfare, and only a single researcher keeping a close eye picked it up, reports Callum Foote.

You have to wonder when some of the Labor Partisans here are going to open their eyes … and their minds …
The development of the 116 wells, each requiring up to 2.5 hectares of land cleared, will be in a 8,678 hectare area and have an operational life of approximately 30 years.
…
It was recommended that the project be subject to environmental assessment before approval by the minister.
Public comments as part of the assessment noted impacts on water resources, threatened listed species and communities, and underestimated risk to migratory species. The department noted further that “without appropriate management the proposed action is likely to result in significant impact to water resources. The department notes that there are existing management frameworks that may be suitable to apply to the proposed action.”
While the environmental assessment opened the project up to public submissions, Plibersek has appeared to let Santos change the wording of their assessment after submissions were closed.
Few of us here will still be around in 30 years … but the emissions from these 116 new wells will be.

The Greens are quite right to try to wreck the Voice referendum because:
1. The Voice is tokenistic.
2. Recognition in the body of the Constitution is a threat to sovereignty of Blaks.
3. Blaks have never ceded sovereignty.
4. The order is wrong. The Greens want a Treaty Now! They keep chanting that so they must mean it.
5. The only Blaks who are worth listening to are the ones the Greens are listening to.
It is a sign of Greens lack of True Grit that they have caved on this. They are doing the next best by not saying anything in support of the Voice.
They are talking about all sorts of other nationally critical things instead. Like inspectors on live trade ships.
I demand that the Greens stick to their principles and what they know to be right, in their hearts, and start actively opposing the Voice Referendum. They should do this in concert with their pals Dutton and GetUp!

Vivek Ramaswamy, the multi-millionaire biotech entrepreneur and self-described intellectual godfather of the anti-woke movement, announced on Tuesday that he is running for president.
“We are in the middle of a national identity crisis,” he declared in an online video launching his campaign, offering that the current political climate constituted a form of “psychological slavery.”
Speaking straight to the camera, with an American flag draped in the background and a flag pin on his lapel, Ramaswamy framed his campaign as a broad counteroffensive to what he called the “woke left” — describing it as a threat to open speech, the free exchanging of ideas and American exceptionalism itself.

But as the Robodebt Royal Commission continues to show, people who are ideologically driven see the law as an inconvenience that can be disregarded.

Is Campbell a blow in? Yes
Will affect her chances? Maybe.
It will have put some of the local Liberal party members noses out of joint. Without doubt some of them were planning on replacing Tudge when he retired. Others will be annoyed because they merely didn’t get a choice in their candidate.
That said as it is a by-election the party will be able to call upon members from elsewhere in Melbourne to make up for any reduction in local effort. In a general election, there is more reliance on the local party to work the campaign as the state party has to deploy what extra resources they have on all the little spot fires that occur when you have dozens of candidates blundering their way through 5 weeks of being in the spotlight.
Then of course there is how the local voters feel about a person who has declared that they have spent their entire life living in the inner city since the age of 20 representing them. All areas have an element of local pride, but it is usually stronger in those areas that have existed for awhile and less in the brand new areas. Aston is one of those areas that has been around for awhile and therefore there is a bit of local pride, being in the foothills of the Dandenongs.

The Philippines is in fact highly unpredictable. It kicked the US out of the country and out of two major bases: Clark and Subic.
OTOH, China is behaving like an international thug towards the Philippines. But you could itemize the major examples, of course so there is no point in my telling you what you already know.

The US has secured access to four additional military bases in the Philippines – a key bit of real estate which would offer a front seat to monitor the Chinese in the South China Sea and around Taiwan.

It depends doesn’t it? If Mexico was threatening to invade California, Texas and New Mexico because once upon a time they were Mexican territory, and China was intervening in the region to help protect the US against such a threat, I’d welcome that.

Sen. Mitt Romney (R-UT) tore into Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) for suggesting the United States undergo a “national divorce” — a euphemism for Republican-controlled states seceding from the country, akin to the South in during the Civil War. Romney gave the comments to Utah reporters in Salt Lake City, according to Deseret.
“Sen. Mitt Romney on Tuesday firmly denounced Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene’s recent call for a ‘national divorce,’ harkening back on what happened in the U.S. during the Civil War,” reported Katie McKellar. “‘You know, I think Abraham Lincoln dealt with that kind of insanity,’ the Utah Republican told reporters during a brief press availability during his visit with lawmakers at the Utah Capitol in Salt Lake City. ‘We’re not going to divide the country. It’s united we stand, divided we fall.

Do you really think a state-level treaty has the same importance or impact as a Federal one?
FN people certainly don’t.
They’re the ones who are asking for constitutional recognition.
As they stand trial for seditious conspiracy over their role in the January 6 attack, members of the far-right group the Proud Boys are trying to subpoena former President Donald Trump as their “star witness” — but that effort is doomed to fail, wrote former federal prosecutor Glenn Kirschner on Tuesday for MSNBC.
“Members of the Proud Boys organization, including chairman Henry ‘Enrique’ Tarrio, are on trial on charges of, among other things, being involved in a seditious conspiracy designed to violently overthrow the government or forcibly resist the laws of the United States. And they have decided to call in their defense a most unlikely witness: former President Donald Trump,” wrote Kirschner. The point of this play, he wrote, is that their lawyers “are hoping to elicit testimony from Mr. Trump that could persuade the jury that he, rather than their clients, instigated the crowd that stormed the Capitol on Jan. 6.”
But there are multiple reasons why this won’t work, wrote Kirschner. First of all, he said, “it is extremely unlikely Trump will say anything about encouraging an attack on the Capitol on Jan. 6. To the contrary, Trump might try to convince the jury that he never said or suggested the Proud Boys or anyone else should storm the Capitol, so the Proud Boys are wholly responsible for their decisions to do so.” And second of all, “Given recent history, it’s clear Trump is not afraid to invoke his Fifth Amendment rights,” meaning they may not be able to get any meaningful testimony out of him at all, let alone testimony that shifts the blame off of them and onto himself.

Re Albo’s comments re super today.
I don’t read them as him saying that the Government isn’t going to do anything much. He seemed to me to be defining “major changes” as changes affecting anyone with super balances of arond $150k.
To me, that’s a bit like a government that decided to remove subsidies for year 12 students in private schools saying “this isn’t a major change because the majority of school students aren’t affected.”
The people who will be bothered about the comments of Chalmers, Jones and Albo are those who are retired or close to retirement and have larger balances which they were hoping would support them for the rest of their lives.
If you intend to be self-funded for all or most of the rest of your life, you need a pretty large balance in an accumulation account to make that viable. The single age pension is currently close to $25k per annum and indexed to inflation. If you wanted to purchase a lifelong annuity of comparable value, with full indexation, it will cost you upwards of $500k. So, while a super account of $1 million might look like quite a lot, it equates to less than twice the value of an age pension. And a super account of that size is not easily achieved.
I don’t think these things are particularly well understood by most people, including journalists and politicians.
BTW, Albo and Jones have been using some rhetoric around the idea that the government needs to determine the appropriate amount of super people need to have for their retirement. As most politicians end up receiving a much higher amount of super than whatever figure they will eventually come up with (and, indeed, often take it before retirement age and in conjunction with a high-paid job), will they be prepared to donate the difference to charity?
