Resolve Strategic: Labor 36, Coalition 34, Greens 12 (open thread)

Labor still well ahead on voting intention, but Resolve Strategic records prime ministerial approval in net negative territory and an ongoing decline in support for an Indigenous Voice.

Courtesy of the Age/Herald, the latest monthly federal voting intention numbers from Resolve Strategic have with Labor down a point to 36%, the Coalition up one to 34%, the Greens up one to 12% and One Nation steady on 5%. As ever, no two-party preferred result is provided, but I make it to be 55-45 to Labor based on 2022 election preferences compared with about 55.5-44.5 last time.

As with last week’s Newspoll, the poll gives Anthony Albanese his first net negative personal rating as prime minister, with approval down four to 40% and disapproval up five to 47%. Peter Dutton is up four to 35% and down one to 44%, with Albanese retaining a 43-28 lead as preferred prime minister, in from 46-25.

The worst news for the government comes once again from the Indigenous Voice, with a forced response question now putting no ahead 57-43, out from 54-46 a month ago. A question allowing for an uncommitted response has no leading 49% to 35%. Combining this month’s results with last month’s to get reasonable sub-samples, no leads 56-44 in New South Wales, 51-49 in Victoria, 61-39 in Queensland and Western Australia and 59-41 in South Australia, with yes leading only in Tasmania by 56-44 off a particularly small sample.

The poll was conducted Wednesday to Saturday from a sample of 1604.

Yes. Very sad news regarding ‘Barass’.

My dad shared a flat in St Kilda with some players when Ron was coaching them back in the early 70s. He was feared and respected.

Today’s sad news might spurn the Blues to aim harder for a GF win in 2023.

  2. Indeed, in the pass the ball contest, you could win a $100 Commonwealth Bank account. If you got the ball through the bull’s eye, there was an elephant’s trumpet (the Commonwealth was the Biggest)

“I think people are giving Dutton far too much credit for the referendum polling.”
I agree, I think even with Liberal Party support it would have had a very good chance of failing. But without it, the failure was certain. So certain that going ahead with it was stupid.

    ______________

Stupid First Nations National Constitutional Convention representatives asking for a Constitutional voice? Or stupid Albanese for listening to them? Should have known Dutton would have reneged?

Horseshoe politics on display once again. Ugly stuff.

In Melbourne we had the handball contest, with Tosca luggage and a Bertochi ham up for grabs among other items.

  7. Ziggy’s was on Parramatta Rd near Lewisham – its decor was styled after a Belle Époque brothel.
Leo Schofield gave it one of the funniest and worst reviews I have ever read.

  8. Centrepoint Tavern 🙂

They used to serve underage girls who had skived off from school back in the 70s. 😉

My first encounter with a Fluffy Duck, and a Martini. I finished the Fluffy Duck but the Martini reminded me of rocket fuel! I just couldn’t.

  9. Best argument for the Voice I’ve heard:

“when we listen to people, and make decisions based on their local knowledge, we get better outcomes”.

Example: Indigenous-controlled Covid programs had some of the best stats in the world.

  10. I agree, I think even with Liberal Party support it would have had a very good chance of failing. But without it, the failure was certain. So certain that going ahead with it was stupid.

    @Watermelon

Nope, it would have got through if the coalition had supported it. Still think some posters on here would have had a go at Albanese no matter what he had done. If Albanese goes through with the referendum ‘it was stupid’. If Albo takes it off the agenda he’s got no ticker and he stands for nothing.

Robertson’s article is part of the problem. People don’t see themselves as racist for going No especially with all the Indigenous no voters highlighted by the media and saying No voters are racist just gets their back up. This isn’t like the marriage equality vote where literally the only reason to vote No was religious or cultural bigotry against homosexuality. There are reasons for voting No including from the Thorpe type of left wing voter; voting Yes is an act of good faith in something which is largely symbolic and doesn’t need to be done this way except for Indigenous people asking for it to be done this way.

Robertson doubles down by harping on what “the world” will think. Dear reader, this has been a counter-productive argument to run at every election and referendum globally it has been tried. People don’t vote to please foreign countries. Also, as I noted before, it’s complete bullshit, hardly anyone overseas will notice or care about a domestic referendum in Australia.

And for the bullshit trifecta, describing it as an endorsing genocide. Tell that to Thorpe. That kind of hyperbole again will drive people to cement in No to spite the idiocy of the take. People are voting on a Voice to Parliament, no more and no less.

I am disappointed if it doesn’t get up but it’s a massive mistake IMO to overblow it and describe it as Australians endorsing genocide or being implacably opposed to reconciliation. It does highlight that something as permanent as a treaty will also be a hard sell – which we should have known already. But mostly this is about Australians distrusting all Constitutional change, especially without bipartisan support, and the point of the Voice being an esoteric one that was easy to wreck by a very hard core No campaign and a really bad windy Yes campaign that couldn’t explain to Australians why they should want it and keeps resorting to the racism well instead.

Excellent post Arky. Some very good points well made.

  12. Great play by the Warriors. If they can replicate the form they displayed today, they could go all the way.

This carry-on about who’s not showing enough respect for Ukraine’s plight is, in my strong view, way over the top. Save for the odd comment by ring-ins, most, if not all, on this site strongly support its battle against the Russian bear – it’s axiomatic! Please therefore desist in perpetuating the obvious.

  13. Would the world have seen us as homophobic if the SSM plebiscite hadn’t got up?

    Of course they would have.

Same for this one folks. We’re going to look uncharitable at best. And you-know-what at worst.

  14. Lefty_E
I would expect some cover of the referendum in the overseas press but I am having difficulty finding it on a limited search. Have you seen much?

  15. I love the talking point that, if the referendum fails, the rest of the world will think Australians are racist. Because I have some bad news for you all…

  16. Good post by Arky posted by Bystander above.

I agree any treaty will be hard to reach particularly if this referendum fails. I don’t think it’s impossible to achieve but will need to be clearly explained about what it does and what the outcomes will be, unlike the current referendum which has failed in this regards.

Finally people will just switch off if they are being referred to as racists. Somehow we need to eventually achieve respect and understanding of and for all parties and peoples. Sadly we have a long way to go yet.

  18. Is there any argument more pathetic than Vote Yes to prevent damage to our international reputation? The same thing has been bleated for the past decade surrounding our offshore detention policy.

  19. Was hot out in Wagga but a great afternoon talking to people @cat.

Last house was an older couple who couldn’t believe that anyone would vote No. Certainly not a ‘lifelong progressive’ couple. People who’ve watched from afar over their lives and think the time is Now. Lifted our spirits. Looking forward to our walk tomorrow as part of the National Walk.

Watermelon – no matter how many times you say it. If not Now then When? The LNP will never be onboard. You can say much about Albo about his ability to sell a message but on the ‘right thing to do’ he gets 100% from me and the thanks from our Aunties and Uncles that want this to happen.

In Oz, there’s always been an undercurrent of racism, exacerbated if the referendum goes down. Dutton might win the battle but has sowed the seed of his political demise. What one sees in him is a Howard mk 2. He’s probably on the phone to him now.

I don’t think people overseas will give a toss one way or the other. I also think the average Australian couldn’t care less what they think.

  22. @watermelon:

“ Putting up a referendum that depended on Dutton’s support was a blunder, and would have been avoided with some better political judgement. And it was never going to get 100% Aboriginal support either; anyone complaining about this fact must have had very unrealistic expectations.”

    _____

I think this post proves you to be the hypocrite from The Greens Political Party that you come across as.

You Green Political Party folk bang on incessantly, day in day out, about Labor’s perceived lack of principles and alleged ‘lowest common denominator’ brand of ‘weak centralism’ politics and yet the melancholy truth is that Labor was bound to do exactly what you now bemoan as poor politics because it committed to the Voice referendum as a matter of principle – it was in the party platform – BEFORE the last election.

Then you knit pick with straw men; of course The Voice wasn’t going to get universal support from all First Nations Australians: the fault lines were well established BEFORE this referendum process was started; but in good faith the Albo led Labor party consulted widely and took action that it believed at the time – based on quite a number of different soundings – that The. Pics had the vast vast vast support of First Nations.

It matters not that Dutton was and is Dutton: the process was started, the calls made BEFORE Dutton became opposition leader; insofar as there was political calculus involved from Labor, it was probably the expectation that Joshie would have replaced Morrison as leader and that he personally would have supported ‘Yes’ and at the very least allowed a free vote/position amongst colleagues.

The voice looks likely to fail. None of those who have proposed it, fought for it, legislated for it, argued the case will be to blame: THAT will rest collectively on Team No’s collective heads, and the feckless public that brought their lies (and let’s be frank and honest, they are happy to do so because Aboriginals very continued existence make them – and their place on this continent- feel very uncomfortable. As if they – or their forebears might have stolen something from them…. Imagine that).

  23. Looks like Ukraine has had yet another win over Russia in the Black Sea.
“ UKRAINE CONTINUES TO DECIMATE RUSSIA’S BLACK SEA FLEET…

The image below is a photograph of the Russian missile ship ‘Samum’, which has taken severe damage after an attack by Ukraine’s latest indigenous drone.

The hull of the ship has been penetrated in two places, and the ship itself is taking water, with much of the hull flooded, and the ship listing to starboard.

While it is likely that the ship will be successfully towed to drydock, it is certainly out of action for a long time to come.”
    https://twitter.com/AleksandrX13/status/1702973547998581125

This photo shows the damaged corvette being towed back into port, listing to starboard.

Since Ukraine knocked out the anti-aircraft and search radars on a recaptured oil rig and in Crimea, the Russian fleet is much more vulnerable in the west Black Sea.

  24. Does anybody notice anything about the sheer diversity of ethnicity of that crowd in that photo?

It’s whiter than the cliffs of Dover in that room…

  25. My point is that ship has long sailed. We already have a racist reputation. Of the small number of people overseas who might be paying attention, even superficially (like reacting to a headline on Twitter), a No result isn’t going to surprise anyone. And a Yes result isn’t really going to dissuade anyone’s anchored opinion of us.

Not that it matters, shame is not a good motivator. Focus on why it’s a good idea, not what people will think of us.

What I notice is how happy they all are with themselves. As if voting NO together confers on them some kind of free thinking contrarian medal.

The same could be said about photos of the yes campaign and this is a problem because where are the growing Asian and Indian populations.

  28. Sarah Henderson front and square as per usual. Lost her seat. Lost in the next election for the same seat. Would love to see that change in a referendum one day. Should not be able to reward someone that their local community has rejected at a previous election with a vacant position. Every party has a track record for the same thing and I hate it.

  29. “Such a crowd of freethinking individuals!”
I see they rounded up every non-white & non-boomer to fill in 70% of the front row.

How disgraceful to label it “Labor’s Risky Voice” as well.

“I agree any treaty will be hard to reach particularly if this referendum fails.”
Hard? No-one will talk about a treaty for 50 years if this fails. The next LNP government will likely completely remove any and all indigenous specific programs and funding to help the mining companies out and gain support from baby boomers and early born gen xers.

I’m sure you’re not as thick as you post(?). The point is that Oz’s
international reputation will be damaged if the referendum goes down. That you fail to understand same is indicative of one who seems willfully oblivious to the plight of FN’s people.
