The fortnightly Essential Research poll gives Labor its best result on voting intention in two months, their primary vote up two to 33%, the Coalition steady on 32%, the Greens up one to 14% and One Nation down two to 6%, with the undecided component down one to 5%. Their lead on the 2PP+ measure is out from 49-45 to 50-45. The poll was conducted Wednesday to Sunday from a sample of 1125.
Also featured are questions on COVID-19, including a finding that 52% consider Australia well prepared for future pandemics compared with 38% for not well prepared, and an unexpected foray on the “nature of reality”, which finds precisely equal proportions of Coalition, Labor and Greens voters alert to the fact that we are “living in a simulation”. The 301 Victorian respondents were asked to rate Daniel Andrews’ contribution to Victoria, with 37% opting for very good or quite good compared with 40% for very poor or quite poor.
Jacinta Price and Peter Dutton have found a new bone to pick at, even though the problems occurred under their watch in government):
https://www.smh.com.au/politics/federal/dutton-price-want-indigenous-spending-audited-20231003-p5e9fb.html
Dutton and Price just throwing chum into the water to churn people up before voting on the referendum.
Generalised assertions based around a global number like ‘$33.4 billion’ don’t take into account, as the article goes on to point out, things like Indigenous Australians accessing medical care through Medicare, which everyone has a right to and Indigenous Australians may proportionately need more of. And that’s a ‘waste’ of ‘taxpayers’ money’ because, Dutton and Price?
I also think it’s hugely insulting and demeaning to demand that Indigenous Australians account for every last cent of ‘taxpayers’ money’ that they spend when the government that Peter Dutton was a senior Minister in gave away BILLIONS OF UNACCOUNTED DOLLARS OF TAXPAYERS’ MONEY to corporations, businesses and the unaccountable Great Barrier Reef Foundation. Not to mention the administrators of the Cashless Welfare Card, Indue, who were White, former Nationals politicians!
Then what?

The appropriate response to someone like Matt Gaetz.
Newt Gingrich has called for Matt Gaetz to be expelled from the Republican Party! The same Republican Party that Newt Gingrich created and which spawned Matt Gaetz!
The Democrats decided not to back in Kevin McCarthy due to the number of times he has betrayed them and the President. Starting with his trip to Mar A Lago to legitimise Trump after the Jan 6 Insurrection.
c@t: “Newt Gingrich has called for Matt Gaetz to be expelled from the Republican Party! The same Republican Party that Newt Gingrich created and which spawned Matt Gaetz!”
That’s a bit unfair. Gingrich certainly was a very disruptive Speaker, but he had a pretty clear and relatively conventional right wing policy position (small government, low taxes, etc.) that he was attempting to progress.
Gaetz’s doesn’t give a rat’s a__e about policy and his main goal appears to be to create chaos in order to draw lots of attention to himself so that he might be able to succeed De Santis as governor of Florida.
Is the fever of Trumpism starting to break? — Robert Reich
https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2023/oct/03/donald-trump-supporters-judges-prosecutors
And even Trump has now seemingly turned on Gaetz. It was apparently ok for him to threaten to remove McCarthy. Or even to launch a “motion to vacate” (a term that sounds vaguely scatological to me, but it might just be my eternally adolescent mind) on the tacit understanding that enough Dems might abstain that McCarthy would survive.
However, bringing McCarthy down now is going to leave the House Republicans in this situation:

Nope. I don’t think there’s the slightest reason to feel sorry for the person who cut down the tree.
It was most likely a bitter, isolated man who was angry with the world about something and believed that cutting down the tree would make him feel better: quite possibly because of the distress that it would cause so many other people. He almost certainly suffers from some form of mental illness.
People in the environmental movement have told me that this type of vandalism quite often occurs after they have won a victory to save a particular environmental asset: the mentality being “you thought you saved this place but I’ll show you.”
The people who do these sorts of things are a__eholes, pure and simple. Left-wing people tend to believe that everyone is ultimately redeemable (a hangover from the Christian influences on early left thinkers). They aren’t.
Early voting for the Voice referendum opened across the country on Tuesday with an exit poll in South Australia showing almost 42 per cent of people supported Yes on day one.
The Advertiser spoke to almost 300 people after they cast their votes at five different pre-polling centres spread across Adelaide. Of the 291 people spoken to by The Advertiser, 169 said they had voted ‘no’, while 122 said they voted ‘yes’.
I must be getting old but anyone who can’t remember Newt Gingrich, his “contract with (corporate) America”, and his frequent assaults on US political traditions dating back to the Clinton era needs to read some history. I agree with Cat on this one.
c@t: “meher baba, I was referring to Newt Gingrich’s ‘burn it all down’ style, which he was the progenitor of.”
Well I suppose he was the pioneer of Republican-led shutdowns in the modern era, but his big shutdown was designed to force Clinton to agree to a clearly-articulated set of demands. And in the end, Gingrich got quite a lot of what he was looking for.
The judge overseeing former President Trump’s New York fraud trial issued a limited gag order for all parties on Tuesday after Trump’s Truth Social account made a post targeting the judge’s principal clerk while she sat just feet away from him in the courtroom.
Judge Arthur Engoron issued the gag order barring Trump and any party in the case from posting or speaking publicly about members of his staff after Trump released personally-identifying information about his principal clerk on Truth Social while the hearing was underway.
The trial judge, without naming Trump, addressed the court on the matter, saying “one of the defendants” posted a “disparaging, untrue and personally-identifying post” about his staff, and though the judge ordered it deleted, it had been emailed out to “millions of other recipients.”
“Personal attacks on members of my court staff are not appropriate and I will not tolerate it under any circumstance,” Engoron said. He added that he warned counsel off the record about the former president’s comments yesterday, but the warning went unheeded.
So now the freedom caucus is split. Some spooked members voting to keep McCarthy. What a rabble.

Which doesn’t mean it’s going to be successful forevermore. Which the Republicans on the Far Autocratic Right of the party are discovering now.
It kinda doesn’t matter, the freedom nutters will have a win of sorts. The GOP ‘moderates’ will round on the democrats after this, continue to shift further into nuttersville and the house will become even more partisan.
Giving a little to the Gaetz of this world gets you infected with his zombie virus. McCarthy was a fool to work with him. Choosing, as so many republicans do, that the extreme autocratic right is somehow the lesser of two evils.
“Kevin McCarthy removed as speaker of the House
California Republican Kevin McCarthy has become the first speaker of the House forced out of the job in US history, after a rebellion by far-right Republicans that was aided by Democrats and fueled by frustration over his approach to government spending and negotiating with Joe Biden.
The final vote tally was 216 in favor and 210 against.”

In politics and governent, if you set off without a clear plan of where you are trying to get to, you will invariably come unstuck.
McCarthy situation reminds me of Jack Lang’s celebrated dictum that, in a political contest, you should always back self-interest because at least you know it’s trying. McCarthy doesn’t have a clear policy agenda, but he is absolutely desperate to be Speaker. His opponents don’t seem to be really clear as to what they want: they should have rallied behind an alternative to McCarthy, but apparently no serious figure in the Republican House caucus wants the job. And, to complicate things further, Trump is presumably on the phone to all and sundry giving them contradictory advice.
In this scenario, it is quite possible that McCarthy will come out on top and be in a stronger position. If he’s smart, he’ll hold out for a return to the usual rules about the vote required within the Republican caucus for a motion to vacate the chair.
House Democrats are clearly a disciplined, united group.
House Republicans … 😆

It was a feral tree, well outside of its natural range.
Therefore it was not ‘nature’ or ‘natural’ but culture and artificial.
Given the absolute smashing suffered by UK biodiversity, it badly needed cutting down and being replaced with the original native lowland deciduous forest.

It was an isolated centuries-old tree in farmland standing next to an ancient wall. Its removal was hardly an urgent priority for ecosystem renewal.
But I guess you don’t like it because tourists would travel to see it.
BTW, the police have yet to identify who cut it down.
Inflation continues to dictate with Central Bankers offering time lines to the achieving of within the band data, these time lines out over another year or so and inviting that the prospect of further rises in Official Rates impacting interest rates on offer to borrowers and investors will be a fact
In the USA the 30 Year Yield is at a 16 year high
Missing from the reference to 16 years and the impact on Equity Markets is that it is 16 years since the Global Financial Crisis – and the Official Rates regime we have “enjoyed” ever since for a raft of reasons including a Pandemic
The 10 Year Bond Yield in AUD reflects the Global trend – factoring in further increases
And, on the basis of the competition between dividends and yields plus the increased interest charge for borrower Companies and citizens the prospect of recession is driving what we see on Equity Markets – and, quite frankly off the data, has done since December 2021, so all but 2 years now since Yields started rising from record lows, handing advantage to Equity Markets
Whilst there are signs of inflation abating there are still contributors seen when we drive past a Service Station and seen with media reporting of rental increases – and those borrowers profiled as being impacted by the movements we have seen in Bond Yields over the past near 2 years, the 10 Year Yield in Australia up from 1.68% to where it sits now
We are returning to a pre GFC World – after 16 long years
Immediately prior to the GFC inflation (due to inflationary government policy particularly in Australia off the back of the Mining Boom Phase 1 from 2004-2007, both inclusive) saw the 10 Year Bond Yield with a 7 in front of it – remember?
The focus of Central Banks is to return inflation. to band
And that is the only course because entrenched inflation feeds inflation and the damage done across society
The question is the prospect of recession
Imagine if in the USA and in Australia we had government with the ideology of austerity delivers confidence and that confidence will trickle down?
Noting what we see with the GOP in the USA Congress
And right wing media in Australia demonising government spend on infrastructure simplistically headlining “debt” to influence a narrative
The very same right wing media which headlines interest rates being at their highest in 16 years, minus reference to the GFC and the fuller narrative of interest rate settings post the GFC
Will the Globe per Se evade Recession?
Where the official measure of a recession is 2 successive quarters of negative GDP
Well we have a focus on employment and full employment plus we have some wages growth (some hard fought for in the USA across media and vehicle manufacture, even the President of the USA joining vehicle manufacture workers!).
Markets are forward looking – and they will turn accordingly
Central Banks read data
Media produce headlines for the purpose of (flagging) sales and revenue from advertisers promoting their product for sale across media, product consumers purchase from the money they earn so a contributor to GDP – and inflation because these same advertisers are increasing their prices to consumers driving inflation
Media is compromised and conflicted across its purpose, accordingly its reporting and its party political bias – and accordingly useless
In political terms in Australia, the polling we read (including particularly in Victoria) would indicate that the majority of citizens are more educated and more mature than the headlines media throw at them relentlessly – if, indeed, they pay any heed to media other than background noise

I believe that longstanding convention is the Dems will never support a Republican speaker or president of the Senate or vice versa.
The holders of these offices are next in line for the Presidency after the V-P, so naturally the Dems would prefer one of their own in them. And McCarthy initially gave some support to the actions on Jan 6, then appeared to change his stance, and then went to Mar-a-Lago and publicly courted Trump.
I think the Dems have done the right thing, both tactically and morally.

Dear Reader,
Еlоn Мusk: Whеrе “Woke” АІ Goes to Dіе? ⧉ October 03
Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you know ChatGPT has taken the world by storm… putting АІ in the limelight.
ChatGPT is an AI program.
It can generate its own articles… its own answers… and its own ideas.
It can also create computer code, craft a website, design a marketing plan, or write a poem.
And it’s done amazing things like pass the U.S. Bar exam, U.S. medical licensing exams, and Wharton’s MBA exam.
But ChatGPT has a dirty little secret…
It’s gone “woke.”
That’s according to Еlоn Мusk.
Musk recently said, “The danger of training AI to be woke – in other words, lie – is deadly.”
A few years ago, Musk left OpenAI (the company behind ChatGPT) because he didn’t like the direction the other partners were taking the company.
For example, ChatGPT refuses to promote the use of fossil fuels.
And it makes offensive jokes about men but not women.
The app also praises President Joe Віdеn, but it won’t make positive remarks about former President Donald Тrumр.
That’s why Мusk is working on a new АІ project.
Teeka Tіwаri is the financial pioneer who believes Musk’s latest venture – xAI – will be a better version of ChatGPT.
Teeka’s research has taken him out to the world’s hottest desert…
To visit a relatively nondescript and unknown facility…
That is supplying technology for Musk’s latest AI venture.
Teeka believes this technology will trigger the biggest boom in history…
All the while giving you, the early investor, a chance to completely transform your financial future.
This investment could be bigger than Tesla…
And bigger than SpaceX.
In fact, Teeka believes this AI stock has MORE upside potential than Nvidia has today.
Watch Tееka’s shocking new video here.

All Republicans
Andrew newton
We are a long way to the next Congress. It needs to be functional and relatively sane. Nobody knows who will benefit electorally from chaos but; one dude thrives on it.
Wondering out loud….. do democrats have a deal already sewn up for the next stage?
Team Katich @ #27 Wednesday, October 4th, 2023 – 7:55 am
An interesting one to game theory out.
The right wing media will blame the Democrat’s for ousting McCarthy, but the middle ground is where it will matter. We will now possibly see weeks of internal strife in the Republican party bubble to the surface. This chaos, added to the blanket coverage of Trumps trials, will continue to peal off votes in the centre. Remembering that the 2024 election will possibly be decided by a few 10s of thousands of votes in key purple states, this will matter.
The opportunity was there, I say the Democrats made the right decision.
The Democrats have now enabled the Republicans to create a leadership vacuum, there will be a shift in political alliances as a new Republican leader is voted in, they gained the above mentioned election implications. Yes they may have increased polarization, but I think that is already passed the point where it matters, so we have diminishing returns on this issue, red states get redder? So what, it’s the purple states where they want to win the centre.
A feather in the cap for the Dems, a black eye for the Repubs.

And in regard the “revalation” that the Victorian government sought legal advice ahead of making an announcement and some 3 weeks out
Back in the day, when Companies were in breach of Letter of Offer covenants, those breaches impacting their viability and their danger to those invested into the business including banks and Trade Creditors, I always sought opinion from both legal and accounting principals – unknown to the business proprietors, obviously
And robust and informative conversation was had as to the course to be undertaken and outcome – on a commercial in confidence basis
The first the business proprietor knew was when “invited” to my office, where the legal and accounting principals were also present
So the presentation to the Company principals was orchastrated and comprehensive – and beyond challenge
9 Enterainmenf is a nonsense
The government was comprehensively informed in arriving at the decision
Was that Mr Money or a spambot?
C@tmomma, I see MGT piked out from being a Repug ‘bombthrower’. As did Lauren Boebert. Domestic strife in MAGA-land. 😆
KEVIN MCCARTHY
– Shortest term as US House Speaker since 1876
– First US House Speaker to be removed from the position by fellow lawmakers
– Vote pushed by elements in the Republican Party, with eight ultimately voting to remove him from the position
My apologies to everyone if that’s what I have posted.
It wasn’t meant to be all of that.
To William and all I’m sorry about that
My iPad went flat as I posted so I didn’t see it to edit it out
