Polls: RedBridge, Morgan and more Newspoll, plus NT leadership change (open thread)

One poll with Labor ahead, the other with a tie, further numbers from Newspoll on the leaders’ traits, and a vacancy in the top job at the Top End.

Roy Morgan might plough on this week with a poll to be dropped next Wednesday or so, but what follows are most likely the last items of polling we will see for the year. The Australian traditionally drops aggregated Newspoll breakdowns in the dead zone after Christmas, but it will only have three polls to aggregate from on this occasion, unless it supplements them somehow.

RedBridge Group has a federal poll showing Labor leading 52.8-47.2 (in from 53.5-46.5 in the last such poll in early November), though seemingly all reportage of the poll has painted it as disastrous for Labor because the small sample of respondents with trades qualifications has the Coalition ahead. The primary votes are Labor 33% (down one), Coalition 35% (steady) and Greens 13% (down one). The accompanying report includes extensive further questions on national direction, issue salience and immigration. The poll was conducted December 6 to 11 from an unusually large sample of 2010.

• The latest weekly poll from Roy Morgan has a tie on two-party preferred, erasing Labor’s 51-49 lead over the previous two weeks. The primary votes are Labor 32% (up one-and-a-half), Coalition 38% (up one), Greens 11.5% (down two-and-a-half) and One Nation 4.5% (down half). The poll was conducted Monday to Sunday from a sample of 1720.

• The Australian had further results from Newspoll on the leaders’ character traits, which it published in a comprehensive display showing earlier numbers for the results going back to 2008 which is worth seeking out if you’re interested in this sort of thing. Anthony Albanese had higher ratings for trustworthy (49% to 41%), in touch (46% to 41%), caring (61% to 45%), likeable (57% to 39%) and having a vision for Australia (59% to 55%), and was less likely to be seen as arrogant (45% to 57%). Peter Dutton led on experienced (70% to 66%), decisive and strong (58% to 48%) and understanding the major issues (57% to 54%).

• Northern Territory Chief Minister Natasha Fyles resigned yesterday after nineteen months in the job, amid revelations she had failed to declare a conflict of interest relating to shares in mining company South 32. It presumably didn’t help that a RedBridge Group poll, conducted in the middle of last month from a sample of 601, had Labor trailing the Country Liberals by 40.6% to 19.7% (although the poll found Labor doing little better federally, and its age breakdowns included the implausible finding that the gap was 40% to 11% among the 18-to-39 age cohort). Names mentioned as possible contenders are her deputy, Nicole Manison, Infrastructure Minister Joel Bowden and Attorney-General Chansey Paech.

  1. Re higgins case

this has all hallmarks of chamberlain hysteria

the core issue is sub judice – there was a curfew on the type of allegations by ms non-tabloid-journalist wilkinson. the federal court should now admit and consider truth claims that were no admissable at time and have been resolved by a court since.

there are two truth claims – rape and cover up.

the latter has been discounted entirely in this trial.

the second in any case remains inconclusive – it is quite possible the plaintiff is right and nothing occurred, whatever intentions. did anyone ask ms higgins how her dress was taken off – this is not done effortlessly, but she has no memory? no trouble with underwear, she wasn’t wearing any. consensual intercourse cannot be ruled out either, neither can some fourth or fifth narrative.
for whatever reasons both parties are being evasive and with credit lacking in their accounts.

such speculation is idle and irrelevant – not much more than gossip. the case has been resolved, and channel 10 were not entitled to put claims true or not to public when they did.

a benchmark for damages has already been set – the 2.4$ surreptiously given the Higgins. the plaintiff deserves 3.5$. I mean who lost their position?

there is another defamation, against higgins, due next year. higgins and her boyfriend better enjoy her french lifestyle while she can.

i hope wilkinson is duly penalised in some way, if this hasn’t in some way been already done.

it was interesting in the few hours i could manage to watch silks and the judge at work. so unusual to see this on camera in this country, and much more studied than one might have expected.

  2. Morning all and thanks for the international roundup Holden Hillbilly.

    Mostly Interested:

“ Re sending a ship to the ME, I’ve had it mentioned to me from someone in the know that we’ve got a very critical but seldom publically discussed crew shortage. Super critical.”

Yes I understand that is the case. Despite all the money spent on recruiting in the last decade the navy has actually shrunk in termws of number of uniformed sailors. We now do not have enough complete crews to send all of the serviceable Anzacs to sea at the same time.

With many crews having done long deployments in the South China Sea this year, most are due leave. Under conditions of service leave could be cancelled and they could be sent to sea again. Howeveer that is not great for morale and leads to more resignations. Using the navy as a de facto police force floating around the Timor Sea on Operation Sovereign Borders has not helped morale.

  3. hungry jack

What about the fact he wasn’t named? I know that doesn’t provide absolute protection, but it does considerably reduce the ‘damage’ that occurred to him.

  4. Hi Torchbearer

That issue was well canvassed in the Federal court. There is legal precedent for consequences of implied naming in a tort – I am not a lawyer but will say that issue was forthrightly argued by plaintiff’s barrister.

  5. “this has all hallmarks of chamberlain hysteria”

… except for the inquest that exonerated Lindy Chamberlain before the NT police decided to charge her anyway.

  6. I think the crewing issue is pretty key to understanding the government’s reluctance to send a ship to the Red Sea. For over a decade now the RAN have practiced a month long ‘shut down’ from late December whereby about 80% of personnel are given up to a month’s leave and the fleet is largely put into harbour. There is always a few large ships ‘on standby’ in case of humanitarian or other emergencies (usually one of the supply ships, one of the three ‘big un uns’ – HMAS Canberra, Adelaide or Choules, and one out our the four ANZAC class ships based on the east and west coasts respectively. I am unsure now this annual shut down affects the patrol boats stationed further north.

Strategically the Canberra establishment have come to a firm belief that an attempt to superintend our major trading partner in its maritime border disputes is our ‘number one’ issue ‘in our immediate region’: see the transcript of our perfumed warlord when interviewed on SkyNoos this week:

    https://www.minister.defence.gov.au/transcripts/2023-12-21/television-interview-sky-news-afternoon-agenda

This is as clear a case of collective insanity as one will find, ever.

As stupid as it is to meddle in the South China Sea, why on earth are we focusing even further north into the East China Sea? … moreover, not just as some sort of ‘one off’ exercise (ie. the HMAS Toowoomba exercises to interdict North Korean vessels doing naughty stuff – a possibly noble endeavour but one that is clearly not in our strategic wheelhouse), but now we are to accept this sort of shitfuckery as ‘core’ RAN operations.

Edited: I also note that the distance from navy base East (Sydney) to where the Toowoomba had the kurfuffle with that PLA-N destroyer last month is about exactly the same distance as from naval base West (Perth) to the Gulf of Aden. Prioritising our “immediate region” my arse.

Albo takes out the trash on Christmas eve…

Just as everyone was knocking off for Xmas, the Australian Government approved a massive new gas field that will provide free gas to notorious tax cheats Shell, and add half a BILLION tonnes of emissions to our atmosphere. 1/5https://t.co/AOcAzNoslo pic.twitter.com/1en4HT0zHe— Mark Ogge (@MarkOgge) December 23, 2023

I believe the government also plans to boost the economy by ensuring that every Australian child gets a lump of coal in their Christmas stocking.

    Merry F*cking Christmas, Australia.

  9. The Labor Government should immediately shut down the tourism industry, stop subsidizing householders and businesses in the climate insurance dead zones, enforce a moratorium on building developments in the climate dead zones (fire, flood and storm) and shut down the domestic animal industries.
The Australian Government should immediately shut down Australia’s airports.
This would immediately, significantly and permanently reduce Australia’s greenhouse gas emissions.
The Labor Government should immediately impose a vehicle emissions limits policy. It should put a road tax on personal vehicles with that road tax (a) being sufficient to maintain the road system and (b) transition the vast majority of Austalia’s travel to public mass transport system.
The Australian Government should immediately take tax measures to put downward pressure on the per capita housing space with the immediate aim of halving that space.
The Australian Government should immediately put an import tariff on embedded CO2 emissions on all goods leaving Australia.
A complementary export tax on embedded emissions of fossil fuels and food commodities leaving Australia should also be levied.
It is only by taking extreme measures that we will get anywhere remotely near to zero net fifty.

What a lot of rot. The defamation case was about Channel 10 airing allegations on the Project. There was no court case at that time. As the court case identified Lehtmann anyway. Anything Wilkinson said during the trial hardly identified him further. The defamation trial is primarily about him being publicly identified. So what Wilkinson said in a logie speech has no bearing on that. The criminal court case determined nothing as inappropriate behaviour by juror caused a mistrial. Independent assessment of Higgins mental health at that time. Caused the DPP to decide not to go to a second trial. even though Higgins wanted too.

  11. Poland’s Foreign Minister, Radoslaw Sikorski, puts richer and stronger democratic countries to shame with his clarity about what’s needed and what’s at stake with Ukraine’s resistance to Russia’s invasion:

“Poland’s new Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski has urged western allies to further develop plans for long-term military production amid Russia’s onslaught of aggression in Europe, the Polish Foreign Minister said in an interview with The Guardian on Dec. 23.

As Russia continues its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Minister Sikorski emphasized the need for European nations to prioritize offering long-term contracts to arms companies, or fund manufacturing themselves to match Russia’s wartime economic mobilization, warning that industrial capacities ultimately decide wars.

“As the west, we are 20 times richer than Russia, but if Russia puts its economy on a wartime footing and we continue on a peacetime basis, they can outproduce us,” Sikorski warned…

… “The Ukrainians are tired, but they are the only people who are entitled to be tired by this war. We in the west are either inconvenienced or bored, but we don’t have the right to be tired, because we are not making any sacrifices,” Sikorski said. “If Putin conquers Ukraine, all our other issues will become microscopic by comparison.””

    https://kyivindependent.com/polish-foreign-minister-western-allies-must-develop-arms-amid-russian-aggression/

Worth repeating: “We in the west are either inconvenienced or bored, but we don’t have the right to be tired, because we are not making any sacrifices”.

Merry Christmas to all! Don’t forget the suffering Putin is forcing upon the Ukrainian people this season, especially those enduring military occupation at the hands of the brutal Russian Army.

  12. On good news stories, OH and I noticed after 6 months out of Australia just how many more EVs are on the road. We particularly notice Teslas, as they are distinctive, but there are also quite a few Polestars, Nissans and Kias. Looks like it is not just imagination:

Tipping point for electric vehicles as sales boom
Australia is approaching a tipping point for an explosion in electric vehicle sales, with growing numbers of affordable models on the market increasingly out-competing petrol cars on price.

The share of EVs in new car sales has tripled every year for the past three years as the number of models available in Australia rises and retail prices fall.
    …….
Australia still lags the global market, where EVs reached 18 per cent of new car sales in the past year. But the local market is catching up and EVs have grown rapidly to exceed 8 per cent of new cars sold in 2023, up from just 3 per cent in 2022.

Using your dubious argument i could also claim everything Lisa Wilkinson said at the Logie speech was fine. As their was a court case on at the time. So if she did anything wrong the courts would have charged her with contempt of courts. The fact that she wasn’t means the Logie speech was totally cleared by the courts.

“An anti-Trump Republican group, The Republican Accountability PAC, released a six-figure campaign advertisement Friday set to air on cable that compares former President Trump to dictators and authoritarian leaders throughout history.

The ad, titled “Dictator Donald,” shows a December 2022 post from Trump where the former president said previous elections, particularly the 2020 presidential election, “allows for the termination of all rules, regulations, and articles, even those found in the Constitution.”

“Trump said he would terminate the Constitution so he could be president again,” the advertisement’s narrator said. “Do you know who also did that? [Benito] Mussolini, [Hugo] Chávez, [Augusto] Pinochet, all of them shelved their Constitutions to centralize power.”

    Quote: (My Fair Lady)
    “Oozing charm from ev’ry pore
He oiled his way around the floor.
Ev’ry trick that he could play,
He used to strip her mask away.
And when at last the dance was done,
He glowed as if he knew he’d won!
And with a voice to eager,
And a smile too broad, He announced to the hostess
That she was a fraud! Mrs. Pearce No!
Henry Ja wohl! Her English is too good, he said,
Which clearly indicates that she is foreign.
Whereas others are instructed in their native language
    English people aren’t.”

    Song: Why Can’t the English?:

Henry Look at her, a prisoner of the gutter,
Condemned by every syllable she ever uttered.
By law she should be taken out and hung,
For the cold-blooded murder of the English tongue.

Eliza Aaoooww! Henry imitating her Aaoooww!
    Heaven’s! What a noise!
This is what the British population,
Calls an elementary education. Pickering Oh,

Counsel, I think you picked a poor example. Henry Did I?
Hear them down in Soho square,
    Dropping “h’s” everywhere.
    Speaking English anyway they like.

You sir, did you go to school?
Man Wadaya tike me for, a fool?
Henry No one taught him ‘take’ instead of ‘tike!
Why can’t the English teach their children how to speak?

This verbal class distinction, by now,
Should be antique. If you spoke as she does, sir,
Instead of the way you do,
Why, you might be selling flowers, too!

    Hear a Yorkshireman, or worse,
    Hear a Cornishman converse,
I’d rather hear a choir singing flat.
Chickens cackling in a barn Just like this one!

Eliza Garn! Henry I ask you, sir, what sort of word is that?
It’s “Aoooow” and “Garn” that keep her in her place.
Not her wretched clothes and dirty face.
Why can’t the English teach their children how to speak?

This verbal class distinction by now should be antique.
If you spoke as she does, sir, Instead of the way you do,
Why, you might be selling flowers, too.
An Englishman’s way of speaking absolutely classifies him,

The moment he talks he makes some other
    Englishman despise him.
One common language I’m afraid we’ll never get.
Oh, why can’t the English learn to set

A good example to people whose
English is painful to your ears?
The Scotch and the Irish leave you close to tears.
There even are places where English completely

Disappears. In America, they haven’t used it for years!
Why can’t the English teach their children how to speak?
Norwegians learn Norwegian; the Greeks have taught their
Greek. In France every Frenchman knows

His language fro “A” to “Zed”
The French never care what they do, actually,
As long as they pronounce in properly.
Arabians learn Arabian with the speed of summer lightning.

    And Hebrews learn it backwards,
    Which is absolutely frightening.
But use proper English you’re regarded as a freak.
    Why can’t the English,

Why can’t the English learn to speak?

  18. Lawyers for former US president Donald Trump asked an appeals court in Washington on Saturday night to toss a federal indictment accusing him of plotting to overturn the 2020 election, arguing that he was immune to the charges because they arose from actions he had taken while he was in the White House.
The weekend filing to the US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit was the latest salvo in a long-running and crucial battle between Trump and the special counsel, Jack Smith, over whether the former president enjoys immunity to the election interference charges.
The fight over immunity has now touched all three levels of the federal court system, including the Supreme Court, which on Friday declined Smith’s request to intervene and hear the case before the appeals court. The ultimate resolution of the issue will have a significant effect not only on the overall viability of the election interference case, but also on whether a trial on the charges is postponed until the heart of the 2024 campaign — or even until after the election. At that point, if Trump wins the presidency, he could order the charges to be dropped.
In a 55-page brief to a three-judge panel of the court, D. John Sauer, a lawyer who has been handling appeals for Trump, argued that under the Constitution, judges cannot hold the president accountable for any acts undertaken while in office. “Under our system of separated powers, the judicial branch cannot sit in judgment over a president’s official acts,” Sauer wrote, adding, “That doctrine is not controversial.”

As for the US Supreme Court turning down Smith’s certiorari petition, I don’t think too much should be read into it. At some stage, this corrupt, highly politicised & discredited court will have to decide whether it’s prepared to further risk its reputation – not including of course the three female justices. Gorsuch, Kavanaugh & Coney Barrett will not risk having their reputation impugned by a “prick” like Trump. He nominated them but they have life tenure – long after he’s but a footnote in history.

My grandmother taught English at Wollongong High school in the 1960s. It was an extraordinarily polyglot community.

She actually found research done in the 1950s and 60s which said the same thing as you have said: It is best if the parents speak their own language at home, because that way the children get the full language experience, absorbing grammar and vocabulary at a high level.

The parents of 1960s Wollongong had of course left war-torn Europe to start a new life, and felt that they should speak English at home.

My grandmother would ask the parent to come and see her, and she would explain to them why it was better for them to speak their mother tongue at home, and she was pretty sure the kids got better results that way.
