Essential Research 2PP+: Labor 50, Coalition 46 (open thread)

More static poll results in the wake of the tax cuts revamp, of which more than half say they know little or nothing.

The fortnightly Essential Research poll adds to an overall picture of static voting intention despite the government’s income tax overhaul, with Labor down a point on the primary vote to 31%, the Coalition recording 34% for the sixth poll in a row, the Greens up a point to 14% and One Nation steady on 7%, with undecided steady on 5%. Respondent-allocated preferences nonetheless cause Labor to perk up a little on the pollster’s 2PP+ measure, which has Labor up two to 50% and the Coalition steady on 46% (again with 5% undecided), Labor’s biggest lead on this measure since the start of October.

The poll also includes the monthly leaders’ favourability ratings, with differ from the separate approval ratings in inviting respondents to rate the leaders on a scale of zero to ten. This gives Peter Dutton his strongest result so far, with a four-point increase among those rating him seven or higher to 32% and a four-point fall in those rating him three or lower to 33%. Anthony Albanese improves slightly from December, when he recorded the weakest results of his prime ministership, with 33% rating him seven or higher (up one) and 35% three or lower (down two).

Questions on the tax cut changes confirm what was already established in finding 56% in favour and 16% opposed, while telling us something new with respect to awareness of them: only 10% consider they know a lot about the changes, with 37% for a bit, 40% for hardly anything and 13% for nothing at all. The poll also found 59% per cent for the “right to disconnect” laws working their way through parliament with only 15% opposed. Other questions cover fuel efficiency standards, party most trusted on tax, the importance of keeping election promises and the ubiquitous Taylor Swift, who scores a non-recognition rating of 3%.

The weekly Roy Morgan poll has Labor’s two-party lead in from 53-47 to 52-48, but this is due to changes in respondent-allocated preferences rather than primary votes, on which Labor gains one-and-a-half points to 34.5% – its strongest showing from Morgan since October – with the Coalition and the Greens steady on 37% and 12% and One Nation down half a point to 4.5%. The poll was conducted Monday to Sunday from a sample of 1699.

In by-election news, of which there will be a fair bit to report over the next six weeks, the ballot paper draws were conducted yesterday for Queensland’s Inala and Ipswich West by-elections on March 16, which have respectively attracted eight and four candidates. Ipswich West is a rare no-show for the Greens, who are presumably more concerned with the same day’s Brisbane City Council elections. Further crowding the calendar is a looming state election in Tasmania, which is covered in the post above.

Sounds action packed c@t. I wish I had thought of someone to mind the dogs. Last year the boarding fees for both my retrievers was more than the total costs for the booking of 2 water front villas at tweed heads that we holidayed at

There is surely something wrong in the world when the total costs to stay at 2
5 star luxury villas on the water is less than the dog kennel fees for the same time.

No, that sounds about right. If you can’t afford the dogs, you probably should not have them.

To be fair in regards to Ian Goodenough’s appearance, he suffers from Chronic Kidney Disease, which has most likely been a major cause of it.

Other than that, he hasn’t really contributed much in his 11 years in parliament, at least compared to Mal Washer, who he replaced upon his retirement in 2013. I hear Washer generously provided medical assistance to anyone who needed it, no matter what party they were in, since he was a GP prior to entering politics.

Not sure what to make of Vince Connelly at this stage, he was only the MP for Stirling from 2019-22.’

I have it in my library. It took Flanagan many tries before he could write it. He finished it, I believe, on the day his father died. There was a related intensity in the father/son relationship. It took me around three goes before I could get through it. Flanagan is rather more forgiving than I am.

It’s not an easy one is it, especially for you I’m sure. I think forgiveness is the key word, which needs exploration, for another time and another place.

Connelly’s main claim to infamy was when tasked with asking a Dixer in question time.

Amy Remeikis described his theatrics thus a couple of years ago in a piece on the farce that is QT : “If you’re really unlucky, you’ll tune in to QT on a day when WA backbencher Vince Connolly has been given the tap to ask a dixer and witness what it looks like when the understudy drama kid finally gets a lead role in a third-rate community theatre production of Cats.”

He has an army background with the SAS mentioned though not sure he was ever a full time member. Perhaps we could ask if he’s ever met BRS?

True. I’ve pretty well given up on sweating it.

From my perspective, parking C5631 in the Yasukuni Shrine makes it impossible. It was the first locomotive to pull a full train from end-to-end of the Burma Railroad. My calculation goes to roughly a death per sleeper. How anyone could even dream of tarting the thing up and displaying it with national flags and putting it into a war memorial shrine is, to be honest, completely beyond my understanding.

As a general principle, true. You also need to take into account that circumstances alter cases.

Which, I am sure, is why, within the space of less than a fortnight, Dutton promised another referendum and then backflipped on it. I am sure you would be able to enlighten us as to the altered circumstances.

You would also be able to enlighten us as to why Ley absolutely promised to reverse Labor’s S3 revamp and then, within less than a fortnight, do a complete back flip.

That really is sad news, it feels so crushing and awful that Avdiivka seems to have fallen like Bakhmut did last year, and nothing seems to change. Russia truly is despicable under its current criminal leadership.

  26. @ FUBAR:

“ Entry into the SASR is only for full time serving members. He passed selection with Hastie.”

    ______

I think there are two errors there.

    1. i think that Army Reservists can apply for SAS selection. In fact one of the SAS troopers that B R-S allegedly bullied was so bullied because he was a reservist and Ben didn’t think he was good enough to be in the SASR. However, unlike the United Kingdom, there is no reservist equivalent of the British Army 21 & 23 SAS Regiments- a “territorial” formation.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/23_Special_Air_Service_Regiment_(Reserve)

Obviously if selected a reservist will serve in the Australian SASR full time, and I guess that in the lead up to undergoing selection trials they would be effectively serving on a full time basis as well.

    2. Vince Connelly passed the physical selection trial for the SAS alongside Andrew Hastie, but unlike Hastie he was not ultimately selected to serve in the Regiment as a ‘sandy beret’ troop commander: he washed out for reasons unknown. It is a heck of an achievement to pass the physical selection trials for the SAS. It is probably the hardest and most unforgiving selection trial for any special forces unit in the world. What is more, a candidate doesn’t get a second chance (which IMO is pretty stupid, but that’s another debate entirely). However, after ‘selection’ – those candidates who pass, still don’t get their ‘sandy beret’ – that takes up to another 12 months, and most who make it through selection are not ultimately ‘selected’.

He then left the regular army, but continued as a reservist, being promoted to major and his last posting was with the SASR, with unknown duties.

Interestingly, is wife was also an army reserve major, serving with the SAS as an intelligence officer. There are many service personnel who ‘serve with the SAS’ but are not actually in the Regiment.

Looking at Vince Connolly’s other army service record, upon graduating from ADFA and Duntroon it seems he specialised in Human Resources and payroll. Maybe he was later the paymaster or quartermaster at Campbell barracks. He didn’t deploy to either Afghanistan or Iraq, but did deploy to East Timor and the Solomons.

You’re running the slogan ‘Fuck off we’re full’ without the expletive. The themes are asinine. They’re phobic. They’re all of a piece with your standard polemics, which are those of an embittered and escapist reactionary. There is no Ponzi scheme. There is no debt accumulating. There is no piper to pay. There is only your prejudice. It’s all you have.

(I’m a portrait artist. I know what I see when I look at it. I know what I see in P1. They should look in the mirror that they might see how others see them.)

  28. That really is sad news, it feels so crushing and awful that Avdiivka seems to have fallen like Bakhmut did last year, and nothing seems to change. Russia truly is despicable under its current criminal leadership.

It highlights the madness of Putin; whatever it takes to get a political “win” to use in the election against his competitors. Oh wait, there aren’t any.

  29. Aqualung, I missed your posts, while doing other things. Sorry.

I think WordPress (the system PB uses) removes whole character emoticons if you include them as part of your text. You can of course use simple emoticons, like the colon followed by a right parenthesis to make a smiley face, semicolon and right parenthesis for winking, and so on, and WordPress will convert them to the appropriate image.

The link I posted works differently. Your goal with it is to copy the hashtag code for the emoticon you want. That code starts with the ampersand symbol (shift 2 on my keyboard) followed by the hashtag symbol (shift 3) followed by a 6-digit number (which actually specifies the symbol you want displayed) and finally a semicolon (to end the thing).

On my PC I click on the emoticon I want then copy that code. But you should be able to read the code straight off the screen as well if your device works differently.

It should look like this, or similar. Here’s the link again.
    https://www.amp-what.com/unicode/search/emoticons
    Best of luck.

  30. Thanks Late Riser. I don’t see the codes only the emoticon and the copy symbol when I click on it.
I seem to recall the one KayJay provided the link to used to display the code as well cause I think I occasionally typed the code in and then the codes disappeared.
I’ll do some meddling and see if I can find out why the codes aren’t there.
    Many thanks

February on course to break unprecedented number of heat records

February is on course to break a record number of heat records, meteorologists say, as human-made global heating and the natural El Niño climate pattern drive up temperatures on land and oceans around the world.

A little over halfway into the shortest month of the year, the heating spike has become so pronounced that climate charts are entering new territory, particularly for sea-surface temperatures that have persisted and accelerated to the point where expert observers are struggling to explain how the change is happening.

“The planet is warming at an accelerating rate. We are seeing rapid temperature increases in the ocean, the climate’s largest reservoir of heat,” said Dr Joel Hirschi, the associate head of marine systems modelling at the UK National Oceanography Centre. “The amplitude by which previous sea surface temperatures records were beaten in 2023 and now 2024 exceed expectations, though understanding why this is, is the subject of ongoing research.”

Humanity is on a trajectory to experience the hottest February in recorded history, after a record January, December, November, October, September, August, July, June and May, according to the Berkeley Earth scientist Zeke Hausfather.
