Essential Research 2PP+: Labor 50, Coalition 46 (open thread)

More static poll results in the wake of the tax cuts revamp, of which more than half say they know little or nothing.

The fortnightly Essential Research poll adds to an overall picture of static voting intention despite the government’s income tax overhaul, with Labor down a point on the primary vote to 31%, the Coalition recording 34% for the sixth poll in a row, the Greens up a point to 14% and One Nation steady on 7%, with undecided steady on 5%. Respondent-allocated preferences nonetheless cause Labor to perk up a little on the pollster’s 2PP+ measure, which has Labor up two to 50% and the Coalition steady on 46% (again with 5% undecided), Labor’s biggest lead on this measure since the start of October.

The poll also includes the monthly leaders’ favourability ratings, with differ from the separate approval ratings in inviting respondents to rate the leaders on a scale of zero to ten. This gives Peter Dutton his strongest result so far, with a four-point increase among those rating him seven or higher to 32% and a four-point fall in those rating him three or lower to 33%. Anthony Albanese improves slightly from December, when he recorded the weakest results of his prime ministership, with 33% rating him seven or higher (up one) and 35% three or lower (down two).

Questions on the tax cut changes confirm what was already established in finding 56% in favour and 16% opposed, while telling us something new with respect to awareness of them: only 10% consider they know a lot about the changes, with 37% for a bit, 40% for hardly anything and 13% for nothing at all. The poll also found 59% per cent for the “right to disconnect” laws working their way through parliament with only 15% opposed. Other questions cover fuel efficiency standards, party most trusted on tax, the importance of keeping election promises and the ubiquitous Taylor Swift, who scores a non-recognition rating of 3%.

The weekly Roy Morgan poll has Labor’s two-party lead in from 53-47 to 52-48, but this is due to changes in respondent-allocated preferences rather than primary votes, on which Labor gains one-and-a-half points to 34.5% – its strongest showing from Morgan since October – with the Coalition and the Greens steady on 37% and 12% and One Nation down half a point to 4.5%. The poll was conducted Monday to Sunday from a sample of 1699.

In by-election news, of which there will be a fair bit to report over the next six weeks, the ballot paper draws were conducted yesterday for Queensland’s Inala and Ipswich West by-elections on March 16, which have respectively attracted eight and four candidates. Ipswich West is a rare no-show for the Greens, who are presumably more concerned with the same day’s Brisbane City Council elections. Further crowding the calendar is a looming state election in Tasmania, which is covered in the post above.

Ukraine Update: Russia lost an entire army, now they’re losing a second one

    https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2024/2/13/2223245/-Ukraine-Update-Russia-lost-an-entire-army-now-they-re-losing-a-second-one?pm_campaign=front_page&pm_source=top_news_slot_5&pm_medium=web

“Russia has lost an army’s worth of soldiers. U.S. intelligence indicated that as of December, Russia had lost 87% of the forces it started with, and that was before another month of lopsided slaughter at Avdiivka.”

What this invasion and other invasions by US and Russia after WW2 demonstrate is that the invading nations cannot win their wars unless they use their ultimate weapon, which they used in WW2.
Yes, the host nations are completely are utterly destroyed in the process of defending but the invading nations were stripped of their aura, lost respect on world stage, suffered enormous social turmoil at home and lost trust in their leadership by their own people.
They can brush off these negative consequences as long as numero uno in their sphere of influence. We are watching right in front of our eyes the consequences of negative impact.

  3. Once it became public that the Channel 10 legal had approved the speech I couldn’t see how they weren’t going to be liable.

The fact that the Channel 10 in-house counsel still thinks that the advice to give the speech was good advice and decided to fight against paying her legal fees has to draw into question their judgement.

  4. Climate change is robbing us of snow day magic

The snowstorm in New York City was a brief reminder of what used to be the norm for winter in the Northeast.

    https://www.msnbc.com/opinion/msnbc-opinion/new-york-snowstorm-climate-change-rcna138612

“Up and down the East Coast, a winter storm dumped inches — or in some places feet — of snow on millions of Americans. The paltry 1.2” that fell in Central Park by around noon was almost as much snow as New York City saw all last year — the lowest total snowfall since records began just after the Civil War. ”

“I remembered that the planet is coming off the hottest January ever recorded. That distressing milestone follows 2023 being hotter than any year going back to at least 1850. Global temperatures over the last 12 months have brushed against the 1.5º Celsius average increase that climate scientists have warned — repeatedly — could lead to major changes on weather patterns.”

No you don’t Fubar. This post is a perfect example of someone not being triggered. I would say.

  6. Former Sydney schoolteacher Helga Lam will not be prosecuted on more than a dozen child abuse charges after successfully arguing the law she was charged under only applied to acts by a male against a male. Lam was arrested in September 2021 and had been facing 15 charges of indecent assault, allegedly committed against four boys aged between 13 and 16 in the late 1970s when she was a teacher at a boys’ school in Sydney’s eastern suburbs.
Lam has always denied the charges and was never convicted of any offence.
The 70-year-old questioned whether the allegations against her constituted a criminal offence according to law, and sought to quash her indictment or permanently put a stop to proceedings. She took her case to the Court of Criminal Appeal after an initial application to the District Court was rejected. The CCA on Tuesday set aside the July 2023 decision of the lower court and ordered that Lam’s legal challenge be upheld on the basis that she is a female and the law under which she was charged “was applicable only to conduct constituting an indecent assault committed by a male upon a male”.

  10. Alex Carey has taken a world record-equalling eight catches in an innings for South Australia in its domestic one-day cup match with Queensland. Five of Carey’s catches were taken off the bowling of Jordan Buckingham, who finished with 6-41 in the Bulls’ total of 218 at Adelaide’s Karen Rolton Oval.
The first to claim eight catches in an innings was Somerset’s Derek Taylor in 1982. The feat was then matched by Worcestershire wicketkeeper James Pipe in 2021. Carey’s new mark is an Australia List A record on its own. Former Australia wicketkeeper Peter Nevill had eight dismissals in an innings for NSW against a Cricket Australia XI in 2017 but two of them were stumpings.

  12. Well, now the din of the Voice Referendum has long gone over the horizon, I wonder where all the noise makers – such as M/s Price and the Green member – no longer a Green member – have gone?
The cynics have said once the LNP and others have done with these out-spoken individuals, they will kind of be ignored. I think these cynics might be on to something here.
M/s Price was also mentioned in despatches as a possible leader of the conservatives. I suppose everyone in politics carries the proverbial baton in the knapsack – including M/s Price.

Cons: I hope there are none and they get their programming and software bulletproof. Maybe a con is that Elon the Ego might sue them for copyright infringement, so I hope they have that side sorted.

For Car importers that claim Australia’s new efficiency rules are “unfair” worth noting how much tougher things are getting for them in other markets.

UK is no longer automatically classifying 4WD Utes as “commercial vehicles”. Huge loss in tax breaks.

I was heartened to see that the ACT Government disagrees with Drumgold. I was worried that they were going to throw their toys out of the pram over Soffronoff’s handling of his report and back him in.

Plus she is a policy flake. Plus, shortly after helping Dutton win the No, she thought she might turn her mind to sorting our the trans ‘problem’. Plus she asserts that Australia’s future is nuclear. Plus they would not let her anywhere near anything like a single decent journalist during the run up to the referendum. It’s funny how the deniers always claim that (a) the emissions from our exported fossil fuels should not be counted as ours, at the same time as they (b) blame other countries for burning our exported fossil fuels, (c) import the products that result from this burning, but don’t agree that these emissions should be counted as ours either, and finally (d) claim there is nothing at all we can do that will have any influence over global emissions.

Of course, I was tongue-in-cheek re Price.
If someone like Julie Bishop, after years of good service to the Libs, could only garner 12 votes for leadership at the time, is a woman and is from the stick in WA, someone like Price would not even be looked at by the conservatives -whether she was looking for the job and notwithstanding she is in the Senate.
But then, the conservatives just love the breed of pollie who ‘say it like it is’ and with the role model of
Barnaby Joyce right in front of our eyes, anything is possible in the Lib-National camp at the moment.
