Polls: Essential Research and Roy Morgan (open thread)

Essential Research continues to point to a close race, while Labor maintains a lead in Roy Morgan without matching last week’s result.

The fortnightly Essential Research poll finds Labor recovering the lead on its 2PP+ measure after losing it for the first time in the previous poll, albeit just barely. The primary votes, which include a 5% undecided component (up one), have Labor up two to 32%, the Coalition steady on 35%, the Greens down two to 11% and One Nation up one to 8%, while Labor’s 48-47 lead on 2PP+ (likewise with 5% undecided) reverses the result from last time.

Further questions focus on foreign policy, with a three-choice question on “Australia’s role in global affairs” finding 20% opting for “primarily an ally of the US”, 38% for “an independent middle power with influence in the Asia-Pacific region” and 25% for “Australia should do its best not to engage in world affairs”. On Israel’s military action in Gaza, 18% felt Israel justified in its present course with a further 20% saying it should agree to a temporary ceasefire, while 37% felt it should permanently withdraw. The poll was conducted last Tuesday to Saturday from a sample of 1216.

After a Labor blowout in the last poll, the weekly Roy Morgan has its two-party lead in from 53.5-46.5 to 51.5-48.5, from primary votes of Labor 32% (down two), Coalition 38% (up one-and-a-half), Greens 13% (down half) and One Nation 4% (up half). The poll was conducted Monday to Sunday from a sample of 1714.

The date of the by-election for Scott Morrison’s seat of Cook has been set at April 13, with nominations to be declared on March 22. Labor is yet to formally determine if it will field a candidate, but has offered public indications that it is unlikely to.

  1. Leftiebrawler, is there any chance you could spend a bit more time discussing Australian politics and current events and a bit less time discussing other contributors to this blog.

  4. Golly…

…I trust Trump has as little imagination as FUBAR. Now let me see.

    Ah, checks and balances.

    The POTUS controls military appointments.
    The SCOTUS is already stacked.
Many, if not most, US police forces have been militarized in terms of equipment and politicized in terms of race relations.
At least half of the states’ armed forces are going to be in GOP states. Some of these are major military forces. See Texas. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Texas_Military_Forces

There are probably several hundred thousand militia wannabes who are armed, locked and loaded, and just waiting to be called up and organized by the POTUS.

The two checks that are less predictable are the House and the Senate. Which reminds me… just how functional are they ATM?

  5. The Military have to follow the orders of the Commander-In-Chief. Or they can mutiny. But Trump will, if god forbid he succeeds in his election plan to use every means at his and his supporters disposal to intimidate and finagle his way to power, make damn sure that he appoints to the position of Defense Secretary, a rolled gold loyalist who will follow his orders and make sure they are implemented to the letter.

If the West decided to stop all imports of Russian resources Russia would collapse in a heap.

    —————————————————————

The economic collapse of the Soviet Union during the Cold War was in large part due to its attempt to support poor third world allies whilst under siege by the rich industrialised West.

The world has now changed. Russia is no longer economically isolated. China is the second largest economy in the world and India is the fifth. As long as these economic powerhouses continue to trade with Russia, all the sanctions the West can muster will not bring Russia to its knees.

  7. Asha, as Paul Keating so brilliantly demonstrated during his celebrated time in the people’s house the art of politicking is 1 part people, 1 part personality…and only 1 part policy.

There may be some sort of case that it was people like George who headed, nudged, dragged… Labor in the right direction when it comes female equity in the Party and the Government.

  9. Mavis,

It’s great, thanks for asking. This is a business focused trip, but my wife and I travelled together to London around New Year, and in June we are bringing her son on what for me is a work trip through England, Scotland, Estonia, France and Jersey.

Travel is getting harder though as I get older. Fortunately I’m short and can sleep sitting up.

  10. Exactly, Boerwar. The House and/or Senate, if they are in Republican hands will become rubber stamps for Trump and if the Democrats only control one of the arms of government, will be powerless to do much of anything to stop him.

  11. You also need to consider the many and prolific ‘state militias’ that operate as a quasi-legal weekend warrior type of testosterone soothing exercise.

Most are armed to the teeth and almost all would be Trump-leaning loyalists

Yep but the military didn’t turn out to the capital so it’s a real unknown if they would turn out because Trump doesn’t have the popularity of Raegan and Bush Jnr.

Yes, and I will continue to “carry on” as you say, opposing homophobia, misogyny and racial hatred despite the constant bitterness and tut-tutting from old white men who suddenly feel they are no longer free to express their bigotry and be applauded for it.

  19. In UK, as public life is in chaos all around, the one thing that gave some sort of assurance and serenity ( or atleast the perception) was Kate Middleton presence and actions in public.
She seemed to be the one royal, who did not seem to lose her mind in all the chaos around her royal surroundings, where it was one soap opera episode after another for last 50 years.
Now, unfortunately, she had taken hit to her credibility with photogate, I wonder, how UK people are feeling.

  20. P1,

I won’t knock them for that and I infact applaud both Asha and Entropy for the desire and willingness to both learn and engage with the political culture and scene in this country. Not enough of our recent arrivals take the time and thus allow themselves to be both alienated and disenfranchised.

    Bizarre 🙁

  24. Why our international bodies are essentially useless.

Ukrainians in territories occupied by the Russian military are being forced to vote in the Russian presidential election under the watch of heavily armed, masked soldiers who are accompanying election officials going from house to house, knocking on doors as they seek to compel participation.

The staging of the election in occupied Ukraine is a violation of international law and Russia was condemned in a statement at the United Nations on Friday by Ukraine and 55 other nations for its “manifest disregard for the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity.”

Yevheniia Hliebova, head of Novomykolaivka village military administration in Kherson region, who has left occupied territory, described it as an “election at gunpoint. That is, violence.”

Election officials were walking around Novomykolaivka, Hliebova said, “in a brigade accompanied by an armed soldier. He was carrying a weapon, so it was a threat, not verbal, but in fact it was a threat of violence.” Those who refused to vote were threatened with repercussions, she said.

Says the follower of the English game of rugby. It good you Rugby School rules type think you are Australian. At some stage if you want to assimilate you need to give up the game that was invented at the Rugby School and revised in West Yorkshire and take up the game supported by true Australian patriots, AFL. Until you do you are only really pretending at being Australian

How are you feeling about the US elections?

Honestly, not as panicked as some. The focus has all been on Donald Trump and the Republican Primaries up to this point and so has involved the lunatic fringe for the most part. Now that the election proper is underway and the ‘Silent Americans’ are going to have their say I think that the results will not be as drastic as some are saying.

But I’m a glass half full kind of person. 😉
