Some data relating to the Coalition’s nuclear energy plans, along with a couple of other things, has helped filled the void in what loomed as a quiet week on the polling front:
• Nine Newspapers had a fresh Resolve Strategic poll focused entirely on the Coalition’s nuclear energy proposal, with no voting intention numbers provided. While this found 41% support for use of nuclear power with 37% opposed, it also found (following a lengthy explanation) 43% preferring “Labor’s plan to use 100% renewables (supported by gas for the next decade or two)” against 33% for “the Coalition’s plan to use nuclear power and some gas to support the renewables”. Nuclear was also the second least favoured energy source out of a list of eleven options, behind coal, with rooftop solar and hydro-electric power most favoured. The poll was conducted from Thursday, a day after Peter Dutton’s announcement, to Sunday, from a sample of 1003.
• Further data on nuclear energy, albeit not from the wake of Peter Dutton’s announcement, is provided by Freshwater Strategy, which has consistently asked respondents if they support or oppose seven designated energy sources in their polling going back to May last year. The last three monthly results have been the most positive for nuclear to date, the latest finding 37% in favour and 32% opposed, but like Resolve Strategic it finds nuclear consistently rated second lowest after coal. The Australian reported on Saturday that Freshwater Strategy conducted further polling for the Coalition focusing on the electorates proposed as sites for the plants, with 59% of those in Maranoa in favour and 33% opposed, 55% in Gippsland in favour with 40% opposed, 52% in O’Connor in favour with 38% opposed, and 51% in Grey in favour with 45% opposed, with tighter but still net favourable results in Calare, Flynn and Hunter.
• The weekly Roy Morgan poll has Labor leading 51-49, after a tied result last week, from primary votes of Labor 31.5% (up two), Coalition 37% (down one), Greens 13% (down half) and One Nation 6% (up one). The poll was conducted Monday to Sunday from a sample of 1696, thus partly before Peter Dutton’s announcement and part after, with its movements well within the boundaries of this pollster’s usual volatility.
• RedBridge Group has a small sample poll from the Melbourne seat of Macnamara, where Labor, Liberal and the Greens polled almost exactly equal shares of the vote in 2022, with Labor rather than the Greens winning after the latter very narrowly went under at the last exclusion. The good news for Labor is that the poll, which was conducted June 13 to 20, finds the Greens at 21% compared with their 29.7% at the election. The bad news is a two-party swing to the Liberals that reduces their margin from 12.2% at the election to 5% in the poll, with Labor’s primary vote down from 31.7% to 30% and the Liberals up from 29.0% to 36%. However, the poll’s sample of 401 puts the margin of error at around 5%.
• YouGov has published a finding from its last federal poll, conducted three weeks ago, suggesting no particular enthusiasm for capitalism over socialism, with 31% of respondents rating themselves between six and ten on a scale running from zero for socialism to ten for capitalism and 27% placing themselves from zero to four, with 42% for the “neutral” option of five. Socialism was favoured by fully 41% of the 18-to-34 age cohort, compared with 23% for capitalism. The poll was conducted May 31 to June 4 from a sample of 1500.
Labor don’t want to talk Nuclear because if they bring up Radioactivity they’ve torpedoed AUKUS.
A couple of major blackouts, Dutts will be talking Nuclear again.
Why not?
So long as Labor /Greens can’t talk radioactivity around Nuke Plants [think Birth Defects]

good to refuse. It’s a shame there’s no heir to the earldom, but if there were, I’m sure he would not risk his family’s name by supporting the pompous prick, Farage, who could conceivably end up as the LOTO.

That’s a dream team to be sure. It would be a trifecta: a gay man, a woman, and of colour. My support for dear Joe is dissipating.
Yes, Catprog, due to the price of iron ore and critical resources spiking, and coal distributors seeking an opportunity to make more money. That’s why.
Coal and nuclear are still cheaper than renewables in terms of ongoing production costs, Google capital vs consumer good dilemma for a better rundown.

Agreed re Buttigeig and Harris.
Buttigieg is a remarkably skilled communicator.
The indefinite suspension of Fatima Payman will cost the Labor political party both votes and credibility.
Fools.
So it’s been several days after Biden’s disastrous debate and I’ve now had a chance to watch it. What an absolute shitshow. I don’t know how he was prepared, but it’s clear to me he had been given a number of different talking points for each issue, which at various times (the question on Roe for eg) he mish-mashed / segued into other unrelated issues because of having to remember them all.
Clearly what they should’ve done was just let Joe be Joe because god knows you can’t ‘prepare’ for a debate with a lying, despotic lunatic opponent. Maybe what he should’ve done was just stand on stage and every answer to every question was to pivot around to Trump being a convicted felon, a rapist, a conman and a fraud. And then pivot to Project 2025.
Alas that didn’t happen and here we are. I’m leaning now towards Biden needing to be replaced. But that raises several issues, namely:
– If this were a normal first debate it’d have been held in Sept/Oct, after Biden had been confirmed, at which point the conversation would not be what it is now. There’d be no talk of change.
– Biden is giving no indication of going anywhere.
– If Biden is able to be convinced to announce his withdrawal (and this would have to be a united, party wide consensus), there are 7 weeks until the DNC convention where a replacement would be nominated – 7 weeks where Trump is essentially opponentless and all the benefits that gives him in speaking publicly.
– Vetting the presidential and VP candidates is normally extensive. Everyone has skeletons in their closet, and the primary season is usually sufficient time for those skeletons to be shaken loose before you are locked and loaded behind your POTUS nominee. Democrats no longer have that time luxury if they are to switch.
– What if Biden stands aside and anoints Harris? I love her, she’s been great on Roe, but I don’t think she has the broad appeal even with voters of colour that is needed to win.

Strongly agreed Rex; we have had multiple occasions now of individuals highlighting it, and while I’m certainly not innocent of going a bit rough, I also am sick of how discussion and debate often devolves into quippy little mantras and “fun” nicknames. That’s not to mention the accusations of sexism, racism and other isms for the fun of it.

What’s he going to say? “Don’t worry, we’ll have it all fixed by 2037*”?
which would be a lie, of course
Labor’s political history has been predicted on unity; it had to be given the forces operating against it. Were Payman to defect to the cross-bench, it’s no big deal – her vote on most issues is guaranteed. Having said that, she’s very brave. I hope she has the stamina to survive.

Agreed. It seems that having heartfelt and authentic views that don’t salute the Caucus are ‘Verboten’. Sad.
I supported Senator Payman when she crossed the floor during the week. I thought it was a good thing and I supported the response by Albanese.
However, what choice did Albanese have when the senator declared that she would cross the floor again on ABC TV today in open defiance of the PM ?
The senator made her point last week and, instead of now working inside caucus to affect change, she had to go public and clearly and effectively announced she would ignore the PM. The senator was openly questioning the authority of the PM of Australia. Her party leader. If Albanese died not respond to this provocation then his authority would have evaporated.
I wish the senator well. She is a strong advocate for her cause. I respect that.
However, ignoring the PM and openly questioning his authority was not the way to progress her cause within the government. This was her choice.
Cheers.
Cheers to all

No need for Payman to defect as she’s been banished by the leaders.
[‘Buttigieg has very little support among Black voters.’]
Agree.
The important question re Payman crossing the floor is what good does it do to those 40,000 Palestinians whom she claimed this morning are dying? It’s not as if Bibi or Hamas are going to sit up and take notice that the Australian parliament passed a motion recognising a two state solution and suddenly go ‘OMG we must ceasefire now!’.
Sad to say but the Senator fell victim to an empty Greens stunt. You can still remain true to your convictions while keeping your dignity intact. Just ask Senator Wong who was similarly trolled by the Greens on SSM.

The punters by and large couldn’t give a stuff. The Daily Rupert could try to cook up a “Labor in chaos” angle but I doubt that it would take. Some Muslim voters would have applauded her stand and be disappointed at her suspension, but are they going to vote for the party of Dutton? Or the Greens?

Good post, doyley. I hope you’re back on track.
The paternalism some people here show towards the senator is quite disgusting… to insinuate she fell for some green stunt does a disservice to her, and the one making the comment.
Again, this political position is the normal globally, and I don’t think the greens were why Ireland, Norway and Spain just had their own voted on the topic. The entire point is that for every country that votes like this, it’s more pressure (as.small as it is) on the states to get serious

The indefinite suspension of Fatima Payman will cost the Labor political party no votes and maintain its credibility at its current level.
The Libs Bridget Archer crossed the floor a few times under Morrison and then Dutton in the HOR but they have different party rules I guess. A really cosy way for Bandt to get another nod in the Senate if he can convince Farquar to flip voluntarily. Nats had their own post election “traitor” when Andrew Gee quit. Interesting times ahead.
”Do you feel lik a bit of an arse making these posts given what has now happened to Fayman?”
No.
I actually admired Ms Fayman taking a stand and was disappointed at her suspension. Be that as it may, Palestine is not high on most voters’ priorities and most voters won’t care.

Biden denies report he will ‘discuss the future of his re-election campaign with family’
Joe Biden’s campaign Saturday denied a report that he “is expected to discuss the future of his re-election campaign with family at Camp David on Sunday” after a problematic debate.
“After publication of this report, a source familiar reached out to stress that the Camp David gathering was not a formal family meeting,” the report states. “’Any discussion about the campaign is expected to be informal or an afterthought,’ the source said. ‘No one is sitting down for a formal or determinative discussion.'”
Still the Biden campaign squashed the report on social media.
“Yeah, no,” Biden-Harris HQ wrote on X. “This was announced a week ago. Joe Biden is and will be the Democratic nominee.”

Fatima Payman represents a diverse younger Australia. She belongs to a part of Australia that the Labor Party is increasingly losing touch with.
You will not find many like her among Labor’s membership, parliamentary ranks, or staffing body. Some federal Labor MPs demanding her expulsion exemplify a class of politician who still believes they are operating in the political landscape of 2001.
Throw her out and Labor will send one very clear message to a large part of diverse suburban Sydney and Melbourne. Out of touch, callous, arrogant.
She supports a two state solution, the existence of Israel and Palestine.

Payman suspended. No doubt Labor crisis headlines from the usual media suspects tomorrow.
I think I said a few weeks ago Payman is an outstanding person. I only saw the quotes from her interview today and I thought she explained herself well.
It’s a pity it has come to this. I’m not nearly smart enough to offer a solution that might be acceptable to all parties.
The Greens will be chortling.

If you didn’t fail, you probably should have. Inflation is not driving energy prices – energy prices are driving inflation. Also, fossil fuels are not a cheap form of energy – not when all the costs are taken into account. People only think they are because they are so massively subsidized – which means they don’t pay the costs directly, they pay them indirectly. Which inflates the cost of just about everything.
The climate crisis directly affects both the supply side (e.g. bushfires reducing supply of building materials) and the demand side (e.g. pandemics increasing demand). Plus there are many indirect impacts, such as increased insurance costs, increased costs of building for extreme climate events, and increased costs of land due to reductions in the areas in which houses can now be safely built at all.
Worrying about the cost of living and ignoring the climate crisis is a bit like worrying about the deckchairs and ignoring the iceberg.
Senator Payman made the choice to question the authority of the PM on national TV today.
It should be considered that the Senator made the choice to take this action at the beginning of the final sitting week before the winter break. A week when the government was geared to promote the tax cuts, energy rebates and other cost of living measures that it was introducing.
The senator had made her point last week yet by her actions today she has derailed the important agenda the government was hoping to progress. Did she consider this in her decision making ?
This was all her choice.
Cheers.
Thanks for the sentiments, everyone.
I’m not going to entirely disappear, just I’m not going to be engaged as much as I was. For some time now when I do engage, my mind often goes to dark places that I’d much rather it not, and I don’t feel in a good place because of it.
For instance, I’m just passing by to drop this, which I don’t think has been discussed yet: In world news, Round 1 of the Iranian Presidential election was held yesterday. The final 2 candidates are Masoud Pezeshkian of the “Reformist” faction (central-liberal) and Saeed Jalili of the “Principalist” faction (conservative).
Round 2 will be held on Friday 5 July, and it looks like it’s going to be a close one, since Round 1 went 44-40 between Pezeshkian and Jalili.
Labor should change their rules. They’re out-dated, and put Labor pollies’ representation of their communities in potential conflict with what the rules establish as the way to demonstrate party loyalty. There’s no reason for it to be that way.
Complaining about media headlines is nonsense when it is Labor’s own rules that frame the articulation of differing opinions as disloyalty.
Senator Payman knows the rules, she’s broken them once and announced today she’d cross the floor again. Albanese has every right to suspend her from the caucus. Actually he should kick her out of the Labor Party altogether, she can go off and join the Greens if she wants or become an independent WA Senator for Hamas.
People on this site arguing that Labor should be leniant with her because she’s a young Muslim woman and expelling her might upset the trendy progressives or Western Sydney voters are just plain ignorant really. What about the rest of Payman’s Labor colleagues, who actually do the right thing and respect the rules of the party they belong to?
True Fess. Naughty people in all parties. Had to smile at Helen Hughes tossing Dutton under a bus after being shafted for Senate pre-selection. Before that she was silent pretty much on Duttons antics . Keeping Taylor in his lane apparently.
