Newspoll quarterly breakdowns: April to June (open thread)

Newspoll’s quarterly breakdowns record Labor sloping downwards in four states while recovering in a fifth. Also: the aftermath of Fatima Payman’s resignation from the ALP.

The Australian today publishes Newspoll’s quarterly state and demographic breakdowns, the latter encompassing gender, age, education, income, working status, language, religion and housing tenure. This encompasses four Newspoll surveys conducted from mid-April to late June, with a combined sample of 4957, breaking down to 1567 for New South Wales down to 368 for South Australia.

The results show Labor deteriorating by a point on two-party preferred in four of the five mainland states, with the Coalition leading for the first time this term in New South Wales, by 51-49; increasing its lead in Queensland to 54-46; and continuing to trail in Victoria, by 54-46, and South Australia, by 53-47. Conversely, the volatile small sample result for Western Australia has Labor back in front by 52-48, after a 54-46 Labor lead in the last quarter of 2023 became a Coalition lead of 51-49 in January-to-March.

A few other bits and pieces from the past fortnight:

• The resignation of Western Australian Senator Fatima Payman from the ALP this week was the party’s first defection since it came to office, reducing its numbers in the 76-seat chamber to 25, with the Coalition on 31 (down one since the election with the resignation of Victorian Senator David Van in June 2023), Greens 11 (down one since February 2023 with Victorian Senator Lidia Thorpe’s resignation), One Nation two, Jacqui Lambie Network one (down one since March with Tasmanian Senator Tammy Tyrell’s resignation), United Australia Party one and five independents (the four aforementioned plus ACT Senator David Pocock).

Nine Newspapers reports an alliance of Muslim groups that has been in talks with Glenn Druery “plans to run candidates against half-a-dozen Labor MPs in the lower house and in the Senate”. Alexi Demetriadi of The Australian reports target seats include Tony Burke’s seat of Watson, Jason Clare’s seat of Blaxland, and Wills in Lalor in Melbourne. The groups in question include The Muslim Vote, modelled on a similar enterprise in the UK that contributed to the loss of four Labour seats to independents yesterday in areas with large Muslim populations. The BBC reporting Labour’s vote share fell 23 points in seats where Muslims accounted for more than 20% of the population. Fatima Payman said she had met with the group last month, but said yesterday she did not intend to collaborate with them.

Sean Ford of the Burnie Advocate reports Burnie deputy mayor Giovanna Simpson has nominated for Liberal preselection in Braddon, which will be vacated after incumbent Gavin Pearce announced his retirement a fortnight ago. Simpson ran in Braddon at the state election and polled 2.6%, the highest out of the non-incumbent candidates on the Liberal ticket.

it is interesting how Alabama and Stinker have piled on to me in the most horrendous ways.
    ============================================

Let’s not play for free kicks. While Alabama and Stinker play pretty hard and i certainly don’t agree with their ideology. It is a bit hypocritical to call them out for that. When many of us do likewise at times. There are some posters who always play nice. If the call came from them, it would be fair enough. You certainly aren’t one of them TPOF.

Probably a good time to drop this. A complete rebuttal of some of the rhetoric we have had today.

    https://www.crikey.com.au/2024/07/12/peter-dutton-liberal-party-us-politics/

That does not read to me that the Greens cannot oppose Labor legislation if that party doesn’t agree with Labor policy.

    ________

Of course they can choose to do so. As can any political party or independent. I just personally see it as a shame that we will lose out on progress during the window we have before Australia lurches conservative again.

At least on PB you learn new things. I had never heard the term TERF until tonight.
    ==============================================

I’m surprised, when Katherine Deves was running in Warringah last election. The MSM was giving her a lot of coverage. That term was coming up a lot in that coverage.

Sadly it’s something a lot of us Harry Potter fans got used to several years ago.

J.K. Rowling has decided for some reason after writing one of the most popular young adult fiction book series in the modern age to devote the rest of her life to being viciously anti-trans.

  5. To each their own Kirsdarke.

I’m comfortable being a white male baby boomer of English heritage despite most of those descriptions being sort of frowned upon these days.

I found it curious that I was accused by the vicious pair of driving Rainmaker off this site when he singled you out as a cause (which flummoxed me btw) and did not mention me.

Anyway, this place is getting toxic. My mental health is fine but I don’t need it damaged by trolls. I’m out again for the time being or maybe forever.

I’m sure that when (or if) I come back Lordbain will be smarmy about it.

Yeah, that’s alright. Honestly I had my own reckoning about trans issues as late as 2014, but as a friend bluntly put it to me, “just don’t be an arsehole about it”.

And I think that’s a good position to have, no need to mock, ridicule or violently attack them, just adopt a position of “respectfully treat them how you would like to be treated” and it got a lot easier from there.

That was when Rainman was posting as Misanthrope. He blamed me for outing the fact he had not left but changed monikers.

Though the reason i did it. Was a number of posters like Nadia. Kept going on how sad it was Rainman was forced off the site. When it was perfectly obvious he hadn’t been. He had just changed his moniker. I sort got sick of hearing that, knowing it was not true.

I think you should head off and reassess posting here, TPOF. It seems you haven’t the fortitude to take any criticism, despite your habit of offering such to others.

I certainly had nothing to do with any accusations of pushing Rainmaker off this place. But I can say with fair certainty that you play for keeps, and aren’t very diplomatic.

I’n not going to apologise to you, or treat you with kid gloves. As best I can tell, the first time I’ve addressed you since I’ve posted here is this afternoon, when I rolled you up in a critique of posters akin to Boerwar. I’m not going to resile from that – I’m pretty sure you’ve treated most you’ve encountered on here much more harshly than me telling you that you have a worldview akin to a superannuated geriatric like Boerwar. But ultimately, it seems it’s best for you to head off, if you can’t engage with any sort of criticism. Best wishes, and no hard feeling for my part.

A good stage on the Tour tonight.
4 category 1 climbs and a HC to finish.
That will sort out the men from the boys.

Does make me feel horribly unfit. 🙂 I actually find the long downhills scary.

Some of this stuff is way over the top. Perhaps a Kearsarge is needed.
    ================================================

Some of it is hyperbole designed to stir or enrage. It is only works if it is successful in doing that to you though.

Though i don’t understand need for an amphibious assault ship?

  13. “Go Trump!”

    Yay!! Preferably very far away.

Maybe a locked room with Alex Jones??

“Though i don’t understand need for an amphibious assault ship?”

    Smarty Butt!!! 🙂

Apparently Kearsarge means “rough mountain” in an NAIndian Language.

  14. Should be great the upcoming U.S. election.
Biden needs to stay where he is, fumbling and bumbling. Hopefully no Kamala takeover via Section 25.
This allows Trump to slip through, and hopefully with it a good grasp of the Senate. I think he is heading to a 56-44 control of the Senate. Pity not quite filibuster proof, but good enough.
I’ll give the left credit in France though. The only bonus is that they make Macrons Presidency unworkable, and draw more to the right.
The March of the right around the world. Riveting.

To continue with yesterdays Dr Who theme. The fate of the beast in the Dr Who episode “The Impossible Planet” is my suggestion.

“Apparently Kearsarge means “rough mountain” in an NAIndian Language.”

Not sure how that fits either?

  16. I didn’t bite the first time, so he repeated the slur. 😆

And, ‘a personal post about divorce’? #shakeshead
It was a psephological post about the sort of men, like you, Alabama, who worship the ground, twice divorced, Donald Trump walks on. So I asked the question, do you fall into that category? You can misconstrue that anyway you want, and you have, Alabama.

Oh, and keep proving what a flaming hypocrite you are by making up new abusive names for me. Kind of sinks your case about me.

  18. Hope he wins Steve. If anything there is nothing better than looking at the sooky lefties crying on tv claiming they’re going to move to Canada. Fuck off Cher, and take Swift, Clooney and Gaga with you. They’re pathetic.

  19. On the upcoming US election …….

Spent some time last week with a group of US students in the field. Interesting conversations.

They are really scared of Trump. Especially since the SCOTUS immunity thing.

I think the Dems have opportunities here. Basically get the vote out to vote against Trump.

Whoever the Dem candidate is. Actually, i am beginning to think that Biden is now very likely to recuse himself from the election in favor of Harris.

If that happens, then i think Trump is sunk. Harris may not be the most inspiring candidate, but she is not geriatric, not a felon, not misogynist and most of all, not BatShit Crazy like Trump.

Lol! i would luv to see a debate between Trump and Harris. 🙂

Don’t believe a bunch of uni students, who are terrified of falling out with their lecturer if they “think” the wrong way.
It’s like listening to the opinions of 16 year old climate hysterics from rich European countries.
Their views count for shit, meaning you can dismiss it.

  22. It’s ok cat at 9.58pm.
I can’t use that original word as my post got removed.
I will have to think of another 3 letter word rhyming with cat, but I suppose for the time being cat will have to do.

  23. ALABAMA @ #2489 Saturday, July 13th, 2024 – 10:08 pm

Ok c@t, so now we’ve got the pleasantries out of the way, what’s your views on…
    1. Abortion. Is six weeks enough to decide, or 38 weeks is ok
    2. Gay Marriage. Do you think SCOTUS will annul next term.

I’m Australian. We are an enlightened country here. We have abortion on demand. That’s exactly how it should be. It’s legal. It’s purely a personal matter between a woman and her doctor. It’s no business of retrograde thinkers like yourself, or other ultraconservative men. Many of whom get found out, just like Trump and other Republican politicians, to have arranged and agreed to abortions for their mistresses and girlfriends.

As far as gay marriage is concerned, you love who you love. As long as you’re not harming anyone you can marry someone of the same sex if you want.

They’re my opinions. I’m just grateful to live in a country that isn’t ruled by religious whackjobs. So America can chart its own course. I can’t change it, so I have no opinion about it.

  24. “Their views count for shit, meaning you can dismiss it.”

Actually, the conversations about politics quite free ranging and they were quite happy that we didn’t agree on everything but could politely discuss.

Probably because they were actual conversations face to face, so you are real time accountable for what you say.

So ….. nah ….. I wont be dismissing their views like some keyboard warriors in crusty undies in some dank basement. Quite a few of them around the Intertubes. 🙁

“I can’t use that original word as my post got removed.”

Hmmm … I am sure there is a life lesson in that somewhere ………

The irony, of course, being that the Supreme Court’s revision of Roe v Wade brought the American jurisprudence on abortion rights directly in line with what has been the case from a structural point of view for decades in Australia.

When a bunch of young students are interviewed by woke hateful humanities graduate losers (ie. The DEI people we hate), then of course they will tell them what they think said DEI losers want to hear.
But by all means, believe what you prefer!

  27. Well done to the new coach (Joe Schmidt) of the Wallabies who defeated Wales 36-28 at AAMI Park, Melbourne. Wales are no pushover having defeated Oz in the ’23 Rugby World Cup. Australia is currently ranked # 8 & should move up the ladder.

Now off to Wimbledon & backing the 28-year-old Italian late bloomer Jasmine Paolini who plays Czech Barbora Krejcikova.
No Italian has won the singles final at Wimbledon.

  28. Will be interesting to see the reaction when it gets annulled next term, and reverted back to the states. Probably a damp squib reaction like when roe v Wade was chucked in the rubbish bin where it belongs.

  29. Off topic but i watched a really good program on ABC24 today.

People are going around taking DNA samples from the children of Sex Tourists.

There are a lot of them as there are idiots who pay extra to have no condom. FFS people there is just the little issue of communicable disease wot??

Anyway, they get the sequence and compare to some of the big databases that have been created for the genealogy thing a lot of people get into.

Interesting take that if you dont put a cover on young lord William of the Downstairs when he out doing his thang. 🙂 The consequences can be near term (bringing some rot back home for the Missus) or long term when a family member gets to know Grandad is a kiddie fiddler years after the act.

Good incentive not to do the cheap sex tourist thing.

  30. “Getting angry are you Imacca. ”

Saddened. a bit by wondering what happened in you life to make yo such a twat.

A bit nervy as if you are actually in Oz we may be driving on the same roads and i want to live longer.

“Are you one of those hated humanities graduates.”

Purely Technical and hands on stuff.
