Polls: Essential Research and Roy Morgan (open thread)

The fortnightly Essential poll finds Labor’s stocks rising a little — but not as much as Donald Trump’s.

The fortnightly Essential Research poll is one of the more encouraging sets of recent polling numbers for Labor, finding them up three on the primary vote to 32% with the Coalition up one to 34%, the Greens down two to 11%, One Nation down one to 7%, and the undecided component steady at 7%. Labor has its nose back in front on the pollster’s 2PP+ measure, up one to 47% with the Coalition down two to 46% and the remainder undecided. Anthony Albanese also improves on the monthly leadership ratings, up three on approval to 43% and down three on disapproval to 46%, while Peter Dutton is up one on approval to 42% and down one on disapproval 41%.

Also featured are some particularly interesting results on US politics, including a finding that Donald Trump was viewed more favourably in the survey period than he had been after the 2020 election (but before January 6). Trump was viewed favourably by 36% and unfavourably 56%, compared with 20% and 72% in 2020, and 23% felt Australia’s relationship with the United States would improve under Trump compared with 37% who felt it would worsen, the corresponding results last time being 7% and 63%.

A very occasional series of questions on unions suggests they are strongly supported, with 64% rating them important to working people today and 26% rating them unimportant, respectively up four points and two points, and a 63-37 split recorded in favour of them being good for the economy over bad. A third of respondents felt Labor was too close to the unions, another third felt the balance was about right, 10% thought they weren’t close enough, and the remainder weren’t sure. Labor scored higher than the Coalition on a series of questions involving the rights of workers, including a slight edge on the question of “ensuring unions are operating ethically”, with Labor favoured by 27% and the Coalition favoured by 23%. The poll was conducted Wednesday to Sunday from a sample of 1137.

The weekly Roy Morgan poll has Labor leading 50.5-49.5 on its respondent-allocated two-party measure, and by 51-49 when it applies preference flows from 2022. The primary votes are Labor 30.5% (down one), Coalition 37.5% (down two), Greens 13% (steady) and One Nation 6.5% (up one-and-a-half). The poll was conducted Monday to Sunday from a sample of 1652.

  1. You give him too much credit Boerwar.

Thank god the only thing he ever went war against were some heritage listed buildings he and his Artie buddies took care of during wargame exercises …

The IDF is increasingly being penetrated by extreme religionists. These are aligned with the West Bank ‘settler/invaders’. The ethical codes that underpinned the old IDF, and upon which FUBAR bases his case, are under active threat.

That’s a fairly accurate assessment of what i was trying to get across in some earlier posts. I suspect it is a bit of a lottery on the Gaza battlefield for the civilians. If you get an old IDF ideology unit. You probably will be ok. If you get a religious nutter unit. You should have risked running.

You think it’s black and white decision making when fighting?

Nope. And no one ever said being a soldier was easy, especially when operating in a complex and dangerous environment. But there does appear to be a pattern of behaviour.

  4. Their ABC platforming a Tory shill ( he has done work for them and is a former head of the ABCC) deridiing the CMFEU. Guess what? Some bikies are members of the union? Guess what? Some member s have engaged in criminal behaviour? So, no business owners in the building industry are bikers? No business owners in the building industry have had crimainal convictions? Why is this not being investigated? Plus, if the union has been taking bribes, who has been offering them? This smacks of piss weak federal Labor. By default, the Grouper right have fallen into line supporting the right wing orthodoxy. Pathetic! The likes of the CMFEU have no need for federal Labor… they catch and kill their own,.

I saw that too. The reporter did ask the “Tory shill” what about companies paying the bribes. The “Tory shill” basically said it understandable they will pay bribes. The illegal activity is only really being carried out by those asking for the bribe. Unfortunately the reporter failed to follow up on that question and allowed his statement, excusing companies paying bribes to stand. No wonder the ABCC failed. With corrupt people like that Tory shill in charge. If you want to stamp out corruption both those giving and receiving bribes must be prosecuted. The idea that building companies paying bribes should be exempt. Smells of corruption and the old ABCC sounds like it was up to its neck init.

No. Leaders and negotiators…give me a break.

  13. Fears of another disastrous federal Liberal campaign in Victoria have sparked a push to dump state leader John Pesutto as he battles a $2m defamation action from expelled former colleague Moira Deeming.
Former tennis star turned MP Sam Groth, who is being mooted as a potential replacement, met former prime minister John Howard in Sydney on Friday as part of a series of meetings with party elders and high-profile community leaders, seeking advice on progressing his career.
There is dismay in the parliamentary Liberal Party about the impact of the Deeming court case but MPs are split over how to respond as Victoria crumbles under record debt, multibillion-dollar major project blowouts and soaring taxes.
Liberal powerbrokers said it was widely accepted Mr Pesutto would lose the leadership if the court case went against him. However, multiple sources said Mr Pesutto would fight on until the Federal Court judgment and had no plans to surrender the leadership.
His survival will hinge on whether he can successfully defend the case which was brought by Mrs Deeming after she was dumped for attending a women’s issues rally in Melbourne last year that was gatecrashed by neo-Nazis.
The fallout from the rally, her expulsion and the legal action has crippled the Victorian Liberal Party for 18 months and was blamed for reducing support for the federal Coalition in the Aston by-election last year, a claim denied by Mr Pesutto and his supporters. The brouhaha has also reduced Mrs Deeming’s support in the parliamentary party, with MPs tired of their messaging being drowned out by the battle.
Mrs Deeming has strong support from many party members but if a vote among her former parliamentary peers were held today on her returning to the party-room, multiple sources said she would lose. “There is white hot anger about how this dispute has festered,’’ one MP said.
Supporters of Peter Dutton are scrambling to keep the federal leader away from the leadership turbulence in Victoria over the court case and some state MPs have bristled at the thought of Canberra “meddling” in Victorian matters. “Peter has no interest in being part of this,’’ a senior federal MP said. Another senior federal MP said: “They (state MPs) hate us putting the oar in.’’
Backers of Mr Groth have been canvassing senior Liberals but the 36-year-old is not guaranteed of majority party support, with any ballot likely to be contested by shadow treasurer Brad Rowswell, although he is not overtly pushing for change. A third possible leadership option is frontbencher Brad Battin, though he would want to be drafted into the position rather than being involved in a bloody execution.

I note that President Joe Biden also remarked that the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh would “not help”. Mot surprisingly, the Netanyahu government is not interested in a ceasefire, bringing the hostages home or anything approaching a settlement. Netanyahu just wants to keep the fighting going for as long as possible.
I’m glad our foreign minister continued her attacks on the Israeli government over the deaths of the six aid workers, including Australian Zomi Frankom. Penny Wong also repeated Albo’s statement that the crushing of Hamas should not be at the expense of killing thousands of innocent Gazans.
How disappointing, though not surprising, to hear Peter Dutton, just back from a suckholing visit to Israel, condemn the Australian government for inquiring into the deaths of the aid workers. Apparently we should have just taken the Israeli government’s word for what happened. Just like we should have just accepted Russia’s word for the downing of the MH17 over Ukraine.

    _________________________________________________________
Quite right Steelydan. Hamas and other Islamic extremists are a bunch of crazies.
But so too are some cabinet ministers in the Israeli government. Itamar Ben-Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich are members of a far right religious party who have advocated for the ethnic cleansing of Gaza and the West Bank and wholesale colonisation of those lands with Jewish settlers.
That’s largely why they have blocked whatever moves there have been to bring about a ceasefire and the return of Israeli hostages.
It’s unfortunate that extremist voices on both sides seem to be the loudest and clearest at the moment. Supporters of Israel and Palestine both have a responsibility to call for the rights of both peoples to be respected and advanced. The only path forward is a two-state solution, which must be worked for no matter how long or hard it takes.

We weren’t making small talk about the traffic. In the West Bank, which road you’re allowed to use, where you’re allowed to go, and what identification card you have, these are just some of the aspects of the Israeli occupation, the architecture of the occupation. With the airstrikes from Hezbollah this week, and the assassination of a Hamas leader in Iran, the war in Gaza threatens still to become an even wider regional conflict.
