Polls: Essential Research and Roy Morgan (open thread)

The fortnightly Essential poll finds Labor’s stocks rising a little — but not as much as Donald Trump’s.

The fortnightly Essential Research poll is one of the more encouraging sets of recent polling numbers for Labor, finding them up three on the primary vote to 32% with the Coalition up one to 34%, the Greens down two to 11%, One Nation down one to 7%, and the undecided component steady at 7%. Labor has its nose back in front on the pollster’s 2PP+ measure, up one to 47% with the Coalition down two to 46% and the remainder undecided. Anthony Albanese also improves on the monthly leadership ratings, up three on approval to 43% and down three on disapproval to 46%, while Peter Dutton is up one on approval to 42% and down one on disapproval 41%.

Also featured are some particularly interesting results on US politics, including a finding that Donald Trump was viewed more favourably in the survey period than he had been after the 2020 election (but before January 6). Trump was viewed favourably by 36% and unfavourably 56%, compared with 20% and 72% in 2020, and 23% felt Australia’s relationship with the United States would improve under Trump compared with 37% who felt it would worsen, the corresponding results last time being 7% and 63%.

A very occasional series of questions on unions suggests they are strongly supported, with 64% rating them important to working people today and 26% rating them unimportant, respectively up four points and two points, and a 63-37 split recorded in favour of them being good for the economy over bad. A third of respondents felt Labor was too close to the unions, another third felt the balance was about right, 10% thought they weren’t close enough, and the remainder weren’t sure. Labor scored higher than the Coalition on a series of questions involving the rights of workers, including a slight edge on the question of “ensuring unions are operating ethically”, with Labor favoured by 27% and the Coalition favoured by 23%. The poll was conducted Wednesday to Sunday from a sample of 1137.

The weekly Roy Morgan poll has Labor leading 50.5-49.5 on its respondent-allocated two-party measure, and by 51-49 when it applies preference flows from 2022. The primary votes are Labor 30.5% (down one), Coalition 37.5% (down two), Greens 13% (steady) and One Nation 6.5% (up one-and-a-half). The poll was conducted Monday to Sunday from a sample of 1652.

  1. Shellbell they are lulling all the other teams into a sense of security so they can thrash them all in the finals.
Or they may have lost the plot.

    haha. Horse not happy!

  4. Swans always lose to Port Power so saving themselves for the finals warm up games against Collingwood, Essendon and Adelaide.

    Sydney cunning.

  5. Remember when Sydney shit themselves in the 2022 Grand Final?

I think it could happen again. Best for them to bow out before getting to the GF.

Then I am a stupid old git. Australia was involved in Indonesia Malaysia Borneo undeclared war 1963-66. Suharto took power in a military coup in 1965 and murder 1/2 to 1 million people. 1975 Indonesia invaded East Timor and killed and starved to death more than 100,000 people. Because of Indonesia Australia bought F1-11 bombers that could fly low and fast to Jakarta and back. Now Indonesia is democratic and friendly but not back then.

Ukraine win gold after protest threatened Olympic berth

Ukraine has won its first gold medal of the Paris Olympics with victory over South Korea in the women’s team saber fencing final.

Individual bronze medallist Olga Kharlan scored 22 points in a 45-42 win and said she motivated herself with thoughts of the sacrifices made by Ukrainian troops on the front lines, dedicating the medal to them afterwards.

Kharlan was disqualified at the world championships for refusing to shake the hand of a Russian fencer, something which put her Olympic qualification in jeopardy. The International Olympic Committee stepped in to allow Kharlan a direct spot at the Paris Games.

“One year ago, I was almost done with fencing because I was disqualified,” she said. “This is the story that has a very happy end. I would like to say thank you to everyone who made it happen. And believe, work, never give up — like Ukraine.”

  16. Just going out to see who our new Labor candidates are for the upcoming NSW Central Coast Council election. Will be interesting to see who won the Primary ballot yesterday.

  17. An Australian who coached the women’s triathlon silver medallist is the second known child sex offender to be accredited for the Paris Olympics.
The presence of the Dutch beach volleyball player Steven van de Velde, who was jailed for raping a 12-year-old British girl, caused a storm of protests when he competed last weekend.
Now The Sunday Times can reveal that on Wednesday Brett Sutton, 65, who had been given accreditation by China, attended the triathlon to watch his athlete, Switzerland’s Julie Derron, take silver ahead of Team GB’s Beth Potter.
Sutton pleaded guilty in 1999 to five counts of sexual abuse of a 13-year-old Australian girl, a talented swimmer he had been coaching. He was sentenced to two years in prison the year before the Sydney Olympics, but the sentence was suspended for three years.
The judge, Robert Hall, said that Sutton had interfered with the girl in a “gross and disgraceful way” and “abused his role to an inexcusable degree”, but he took into account that, as the national triathlon coach, Sutton was preparing a number of athletes for the Games. “A large number of leading athletes will suffer disadvantage from your absence from the scene,” Hall said.

  18. Looking at the comments last night it appears that Australia was invaded by Indonesia in the early 60s. I must admit I can’t remember it but I have vague memories of Bob Menzies winning an election after creating an anti-Indonesian scare. In any case the Americans eventually sorted it out by staging a coup and slaughtering the KPI.

  19. The Prime Minister isn’t a fool, Rex Douglas. He remembers what happened in NSW when a Liberal state government tried to ban greyhound racing. He can also remember how Labor candidates were obliterated by the pubs and clubs the last time they tried to severely restrict gambling. So I can only imagine what would happen to federal Labor if they adopted Pocock’s position.

You can call him whatever you like in your sanctimonious, snooty way, Rex Douglas, but you don’t have to be a political realist. In fact, you are the exact opposite.

  20. Rex, “Albo is all talk”.
Albanese is easily the shallowest federal Labor leader I can recall. His only signature policy was a very fast train, and even that has gone by the wayside.

  21. And today we have C@t… supporting minimal gambling reforms that go against what Labor was promising, including a now passed Labor big name.

And trying to justify it as being electoral poison… Man, I wonder if there’s another reason Labor won’t touch gambling… couldn’t possibly be donations;)

Yet another place where Labor was all talk, and out money before ethics…

  22. I am disappointed as well. Gambling is a scourge.

    Is Labor thinking of Tasmania?

No doubt Lordbain will say the Australian electorate has changed since 2019 and are ready for progressive policy. In this case 2018 😉

  23. C@tmomma
I agree, there was such an outcry regarding poker machine regulations. Although politicians like the Greens and Andrew Wilkie, who where pushing for the law had nothing to lose. Wilkie did a big dummy spit after the whole thing was dropped. As it was if the regulations had passed the LNP would have just cancelled them while many ALP reps would have lost their seats.

We were fortunate to see both majors attempting to outdo each other in the last NSW election. Progress has been made here after the disappointment on the reversal on greyhound racing.

    Griff, an oldie can hope.

    ________

    True! 🙂

One of the hardest parts of politics in a democracy is bringing the polity with you bit.

  26. Gambling is a curse on society. But like most things when you try to take something away from people they don’t like it even if one doesn’t gamble.

  27. Insiders today was diabolically bad. I switched off when Patricia Karvellis (who is normally quite sensible) pronounced that treaty and truth telling was going to be a big issue in the forthcoming election. As much as I am disappointed in the Voice outcome, it is a dead electoral issue. And I just wish the ABC could wake up to that fact, rather than trying to breathe life into the corpse.

  28. SMH 21/02/2023
Communications Minister Michelle Rowland has declared she will not accept any more donations from gambling firms like Sportsbet and conceded the public expected better behaviour from elected officials.

Rowland, a minister in charge of gambling regulation who received about $19,000 from Sportsbet before the May election, admitted her non-disclosure of the gifts highlighted the need to strengthen Australia’s donation laws.
    _____________________
Sportsbet has been grooming Rowland for a while now.
Looks like their investment paid off in the end.

  29. At the least Labor can act on gambling advertising. We all remember the warnings about cigarette advertising. Now everyone accepts it was a good move. Voters tend to appreciate restrictions even if industry doesn’t. The whole it’s not popular for such restrictions sounds like bs, Some polling could be done to make sure of course.

  30. Now that they’ve settled into their desks for 3 years and conducted every possible review imaginable to give themselves political cover for the reforms they want to make, I hope a second term pitch for Labor will be significantly more ambitious than their first term (not that they haven’t implemented several important reforms already).

If they’re going for a three term strategy, it’s got to be:
First term, safe pair of hands (hasn’t worked too well when people are craving drastic action).
Second term, use the trust you’ve hopefully built with the electorate to implement big reforms.
Third term, bed those reforms down so that they stick if and when the Coalition are voted back in.

If Labor don’t bring some big changes to their second term pitch, this period of Labor will go down as one defined by a pathological lack of ambition.

To give this perspective some cover, I’ll still give them my first preference anyway, I’ll just be disappointed.

[Gambling is a curse on society. But like most things when you try to take something away from people they don’t like it even if one doesn’t gamble.]

There is no better evidence to outline the extent of the barriers which exist and will be used to avoid any changes to control of gambling than the Tasmanian election of 2018.
Another example is the failure of a government to better the efforts of gaming is best outlined by the failure of successive NSW premiers to ban greyhound racing.
Observe the current opposition that exists to the proposal to re purpose Rosehill racecourse for housing.
Pithy little comments regarding the ease of gambling change and Labor’s efforts to implement changes do no more than “play into the hands” of both the gaming industry, its hold on the lives of vulnerable people and the LNP.
NSW and Australia were built on the foundations of gambling and wagering.
I’ve advocated for changes to the “curse” of gambling over the years (including on PB) and have come to realize that taking cheap shots at Labor is “piss poor” and partisan nonsense.
Quite simply, there is insufficient support to change gambling, wagering, horse racing, dog racing, trotting and pacing, casinos, poker machines and raffles in Australia.
If you desire change regarding gaming, garner support for change, ignore political affiliations and be prepared for a success rate that defies “the banker always wins”.
