Polls: Essential Research and Roy Morgan (open thread)

The fortnightly Essential poll finds Labor’s stocks rising a little — but not as much as Donald Trump’s.

The fortnightly Essential Research poll is one of the more encouraging sets of recent polling numbers for Labor, finding them up three on the primary vote to 32% with the Coalition up one to 34%, the Greens down two to 11%, One Nation down one to 7%, and the undecided component steady at 7%. Labor has its nose back in front on the pollster’s 2PP+ measure, up one to 47% with the Coalition down two to 46% and the remainder undecided. Anthony Albanese also improves on the monthly leadership ratings, up three on approval to 43% and down three on disapproval to 46%, while Peter Dutton is up one on approval to 42% and down one on disapproval 41%.

Also featured are some particularly interesting results on US politics, including a finding that Donald Trump was viewed more favourably in the survey period than he had been after the 2020 election (but before January 6). Trump was viewed favourably by 36% and unfavourably 56%, compared with 20% and 72% in 2020, and 23% felt Australia’s relationship with the United States would improve under Trump compared with 37% who felt it would worsen, the corresponding results last time being 7% and 63%.

A very occasional series of questions on unions suggests they are strongly supported, with 64% rating them important to working people today and 26% rating them unimportant, respectively up four points and two points, and a 63-37 split recorded in favour of them being good for the economy over bad. A third of respondents felt Labor was too close to the unions, another third felt the balance was about right, 10% thought they weren’t close enough, and the remainder weren’t sure. Labor scored higher than the Coalition on a series of questions involving the rights of workers, including a slight edge on the question of “ensuring unions are operating ethically”, with Labor favoured by 27% and the Coalition favoured by 23%. The poll was conducted Wednesday to Sunday from a sample of 1137.

The weekly Roy Morgan poll has Labor leading 50.5-49.5 on its respondent-allocated two-party measure, and by 51-49 when it applies preference flows from 2022. The primary votes are Labor 30.5% (down one), Coalition 37.5% (down two), Greens 13% (steady) and One Nation 6.5% (up one-and-a-half). The poll was conducted Monday to Sunday from a sample of 1652.

  1. To be clear on my earlier comments, I was critical of the inconsistent messaging from Albo about Makaratta.

If Labor does genuinely intend to back away from the proposed Makaratta commission, then I would be quite critical of that action. That would be cowardice.

ASIO has raised Austalia’s terror threat level from “possible” to “probable”.

ALBO has raised Labor’s minority government threat level from “possible” to “probable”.

So you are downplaying the rising threat by far right extremists in this country? You only have to look to the UK and see what the Neo-Nazis there are currently doing. Inspired by people like Nigel Farage and Andrew Tate. They are actively encouraging violent rebellion against authorities. This is a real and growing threat. No matter how much you want to flippantly downplay it.

This is not what I’ve read elsewhere, where the IDF in Gaza has been described as an army made up of heavily-armed, ill-disciplined reservists, with little regard for Palestinian life.

Your sources would obviously be unbiased experts in military operations and the law of war providing a nonpartisan assessment based on on the ground observations. No?

The Government does need to find a new way. The Indigenous body that would have been formed by the Voice, would have overseen the process. That body will now not come into existence. Possibly the Federal Government needs to talk to the States & Territories. So that Indigenous bodies that are set up at that level. Could in someway be used to select a Federal representative body, that becomes part of the process?

I don’t think anyone would object if a different method were put in place to achieve the outcome now given that the Voice failed. However doing nothing is IMO not an option.

It will be up to Labor to propose what the alternative body is, or a process to determine what it is.

I have some fears over the second approach (process to determine) because it could obviously be used simply to stall action till after the next election. That may help Labor politically but it would not help indigenous Australians. Ergo criticism would be deserved.

Also, Labor has stalled action on multiple fronts via inquiries and reviews. At some level some in Labor might think this clever. But when punters have seen the same trick multiple times before, it loses credibility. It has been almost a year since the Voice failed, and the lack of follow up policy action is noticeable.

    How do you know this?

I do not recall the public ever being told this as part of the Referendum campaign.

  15. My favourite youtube Defence Economist, Perun, has a new video out on “The Race for the Next Generation Submarines”. It considers the development of US nuclear subs, Russian nuclear and diesel subs, and Japanese diesel subs. There are some comments on costs that are very relevant to AUKUS.

  17. Griff: “Yes. Not turning up after a loss is so much better. That is what real leaders do.”
    ——————————————————————————–
Real leaders also tell the truth in a clear and unambiguous way.

If you have a look at the words of his speech to the Garma Festival

    https://www.pm.gov.au/media/economic-empowerment-indigenous-australians-address-garma-festival

Albo started out quite bravely and honestly in terms of saying “my strategy failed, but I remain optimistic” and so on and so forth. But he didn’t take the next step of committing to taking forward the other aspects of the Uluru Statement or even to outline some sort of alternative strategy for Makarrata.

What he went on to do was talk in the broad about closing the gap and then to promote various minor government initiatives which mostly take practical effect at a local level. The second half of the speech comprised the sort of stuff that any Liberal leader would have been happy to deliver.

Albo is perfectly correct to shy away from the concept of a Makarrata Commission and especially “truth-telling.” Dutton and Price and co will be licking their lips at the prospect of being presented with such juicy targets.

But, if he’s moving towards more of an evolving approach to Makarrata, he could have said so a bit more clearly in his speech. He could have talked about trying to move the process to a point at which it transcends the grubby world of partisan politics. Of how he would like to engage some great and well-respected Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians in the process. There was lots of scope for him to make some stirring statements along these lines.

But instead he said nothing and, not surprisingly, as soon as the media got the chance, they asked him what had happened to Makarrata and truth-telling. And his replies didn’t cut the mustard, did they?

Because, at the end of the day, Albo is an accomplished backroom dealer who is only a so-so politician.

A better politician would have seized the opportunity to do something along the lines of Scarlett O’Hara’s “as God is my witness” speech on the ruins of Tara. But Albo didn’t go anywhere near that. It’s not how his mind or his instincts work: he’s looking for the next deal that he can cut, not for the light on the hill.

  25. Why would Labor put reforms up that the Thug and his Toolie will block with much harrumphing and stunting and holier-than-thou?

Even stuff that they only block for now will scarcely be bedded down before the next election.

Previously blocked altogether or delayed significantly: five significant pieces of climate action, the NACC, AAT reform, housing supply for victims of DV, housing supply for Indigenous people, housing supply for homeless people and IR reform.

Currently being held up or blocked altogether by Thug&Bandicoot: religious discrimination reform, taxation of superannuantion accounts more than $3 million, political donations reform, NDIS reform, and the supply of social housing.

  26. This articles makes the case that anti semitism has moved from the Right to the Left, but also includes this:

Traditionally, antisemitism in the United States was promoted by far-right organizations and movements, such as the Ku Klux Klan, neo-Nazi groups and skinheads. Such groups focused on propagating traditional antisemitic narratives alleging Jews’ racial inferiority, their control of the financial sector and their role in global cabals aiming to undermine America and Western civilization.

  27. And of course that noted Leftist Henry Ford was right into it!

From the 1870s to the 1940s, Jews were routinely discriminated against and barred from working in some fields of employment, barred from residing certain properties, not accepted as members by elite social clubs, barred from resort areas and limited by quotas in enrolling in elite colleges. Antisemitism reached its peak with the rise of the second Ku Klux Klan in the 1920s, antisemitic publications by Henry Ford, and incendiary radio speeches by Father Coughlin in the late 1930s.

    https://theconversation.com/the-long-dark-history-of-antisemitism-in-australia-217908

There were quite complex historical relationships involving the Right and the struggle between the Arabists and the Pro-Zionists.

Both the Left and the Right have had periods of greater or lesser anti-semitism.

In the current circumstances, Dutton is seeking to astroturf pro-Israeli sentiment and Bandt is seeking to astroturf the rest.

Both are being destructive in so doing.

  30. FUBAR: “Where? When?

    ——————————————————————————–
Anti-semitism and the right side of politics? Well let me see.

Well, first of all there were the Protocols of the Elders of Zion.

    Then the Nazis.

And, at the same time, the blatant anti-semitism of far right US organisations such as the Ku Klux Klan and the John Birch Society. And, in the Australian context, the League of Rights.

And continuing anti-semitism among the ultra-nationalists and neo-Nazis of Europe, especially Eastern Europe.

More locally, the exclusion of Jewish people from establishment organisations (including the Liberal Party) and elite social clubs. For instance, the Jewish community of Sydney had to establish its own golf club – which it appropriately named the Monash Golf Club – because of its exclusion from other such facilities.

Those days are more or less gone: although relations between the Melbourne Club and the Melbourne Jewish community remain rather tentative.

But I agree with you that the focus of anti-semitism in most Western countries has now shifted from the right to the left

“Hockey India has officially raised concerns about the quality of umpiring and decision-making during the India vs Great Britain men’s hockey quarter-final at the Paris Olympics on Sunday. “The complaint focuses on a critical match between India and Great Britain, where several inconsistencies in officiating potentially influenced the game’s outcome,” said Hockey India in a statement.”

“Key issues highlighted in the official complaint include:

    1. Inconsistent video umpire reviews, particularly regarding the red card decision for an Indian player, which has eroded trust in the video review system.

    2. Coaching of a goalkeeper from behind the goalpost during the shoot-out.

    3. Use of a video tablet by a goalkeeper during the shoot-out.

“These incidents have undermined confidence in the officiating process among players, coaches, and fans. Hockey India calls for a thorough review of these matters to uphold the integrity of the sport and ensure fair play in future matches,” HI said in a statement.

India’s star defender Amit Rohidas was given a red card in the 17th minute for hitting an opposition player with his stick, which the video umpire deemed it as “intentional”. Britain were already dominating the match with superior ball possession and it put India in a very tricky position.

Notably, red cards are extremely rare in hockey. Many believed a yellow card (10-minute suspension) was enough fir Amit’s offence as the Indian defender was just trying to pull his stick away in the opposite direction instead of hitting the Britain player.

The second incident took place during the penalty shoot out when India’s Sukhjeet Singh was lining up to take the second penalty stroke. The on-field umpires had to stop proceedings as the Britain keeper was seen using a tablet before settling into his mark under the goal post.

“Today, I am proud to announce that – through a new partnership agreement with the Northern Territory Government and the Yothu Yindi foundation – we will be investing $20 million from the Aboriginal Benefits Account to build The Garma Institute.

“I commend the Yothu Yindi Foundation for their dedication to this ground-breaking initiative and their vision for future generations of Yolngu students who can access world-class education on-Country, learning Yolŋu and Balanda knowledge close to home.

“Communities across Arnhem Land and other areas of the Northern Territory have always understood the power of strong partnerships to deliver better outcomes.”

“The Governments $1 million will go towards assisting the establishments of the Garma Institute, providing more opportunities along the Gove Peninsula.”

Quotes attributable to Yothu Yindi Foundation CEO Denise Bowden

“This Partnership Commitment recognises that the Garma Institute will be a game-changer for the region, a state-of-the-art education facility that will preserve and protect Yolngu knowledge, languages, and traditions, capturing and showcasing 60,000 years of unique cultural DNA.

“Offering a suite of tertiary, VET, and bridging courses tailored to the needs of the local community, it will advance education outcomes and create employment opportunities at a critical time for the region.

“It will allow Yolngu to complete the studies of their choice, without having to leave their community and culture behind.

We believe that history and scripture prove that God deals with nations in relation to how they deal with Israel.”[80] They cite part of the blessing of Isaac at Genesis 27:29, “Those who curse you will be cursed, and those who bless you will be blessed.” Martin Luther King Jr. has also been cited as a Christian supporter of Israel and Zionism.

  42. It would seem even a mature democracy has a group of thugs/right-wing/racially-driven haters to fill some of the streets with their violence. That we also have a local lot with the same brand and intentions is of no surprise.
Last time in the UK, I noted the further south one moved towards London the more St George flags were in evidence……
Even more sobering is an item on TV a week or so ago, talking about the rise of neo-Fascists in some European countries, is their targeting the custodians/caretakers of many of the ex-Nazi death camps, in a attempt to take down and/or erase what they see is a lie.
In passing, at the Auschwitz, the Poles had the foresight not to bulldoze the blown up crematorium (by the retreating Germans) as they noted that down the years, if there was no physical evidence of the building, the denyers would use this as proof such a building/place never existed.
How correct they are turning out to be…….
