Polls: Essential Research and Roy Morgan (open thread)

The fortnightly Essential poll finds Labor’s stocks rising a little — but not as much as Donald Trump’s.

The fortnightly Essential Research poll is one of the more encouraging sets of recent polling numbers for Labor, finding them up three on the primary vote to 32% with the Coalition up one to 34%, the Greens down two to 11%, One Nation down one to 7%, and the undecided component steady at 7%. Labor has its nose back in front on the pollster’s 2PP+ measure, up one to 47% with the Coalition down two to 46% and the remainder undecided. Anthony Albanese also improves on the monthly leadership ratings, up three on approval to 43% and down three on disapproval to 46%, while Peter Dutton is up one on approval to 42% and down one on disapproval 41%.

Also featured are some particularly interesting results on US politics, including a finding that Donald Trump was viewed more favourably in the survey period than he had been after the 2020 election (but before January 6). Trump was viewed favourably by 36% and unfavourably 56%, compared with 20% and 72% in 2020, and 23% felt Australia’s relationship with the United States would improve under Trump compared with 37% who felt it would worsen, the corresponding results last time being 7% and 63%.

A very occasional series of questions on unions suggests they are strongly supported, with 64% rating them important to working people today and 26% rating them unimportant, respectively up four points and two points, and a 63-37 split recorded in favour of them being good for the economy over bad. A third of respondents felt Labor was too close to the unions, another third felt the balance was about right, 10% thought they weren’t close enough, and the remainder weren’t sure. Labor scored higher than the Coalition on a series of questions involving the rights of workers, including a slight edge on the question of “ensuring unions are operating ethically”, with Labor favoured by 27% and the Coalition favoured by 23%. The poll was conducted Wednesday to Sunday from a sample of 1137.

The weekly Roy Morgan poll has Labor leading 50.5-49.5 on its respondent-allocated two-party measure, and by 51-49 when it applies preference flows from 2022. The primary votes are Labor 30.5% (down one), Coalition 37.5% (down two), Greens 13% (steady) and One Nation 6.5% (up one-and-a-half). The poll was conducted Monday to Sunday from a sample of 1652.

My issue is, this was not the message being given by the ASIO chief. If your not being honest about where the threat is coming from, why raise the threat level?’

    Good point, IMO.

Same could be said about this statement of his too. Which he made during the Dunkley by-election. What’s the point if you aren’t going to name them?

  2. Same old, same old, here I see. 🙄

Back to the Olympics, where young Aussie sprint superstar, Torrie Lewis, has made it to the semi finals of the 200m at only 19 years of age!

Honestly people, if you think slagging and bagging the Albanese government here relentlessly is more important than the Olympics, then I can’t help you.

  5. Yes bore

The ALPs repeated floggings of Israel with wet lettuce have done wonders for social cohesion and sentiment amongst the Muslim community, the left, and all those Australians who would prefer their government not to offer tacit support to genocidal war criminals

And yes, the greens holding up housing legislation to get, wait for it, more money for housing, especially public housing which the ALP doesn’t believe in outside of the context of albo’s log cabin story, is exactly the same as Dutton blocking it purely to frustrate the government

And yes, the greens pushing for actually progressive outcomes is somehow pushing votes of Labor to…….. one nation, I mean it makes perfect sense to.me!

Serious question bore – would the situation with housing be better or worse if the greens had just folded instead of getting the changes they secured??

Likewise do you think environmental outcomes would be better or worse if the greens just passed whatever piss weak timid crap the ALP bowls up?

  6. Boerwar – I think the military is attempting to step in merely to stop the country falling into anarchy. The protest seems to have been fairly justified as it looked to be a clear case of reserving government jobs for political appointees of ruling party. The Awami League had been moving in a very non-democratic direction in the past few years (locking up opponents, closing opposition media etc.).

Some of you Greens are such pathetic twerps. Always resort to personal abuse.

The Greens significantly delayed climate action. They spent eight months pissing all over the Voice. They are currently enabling hordes of spivs and crooks stealing hundeds of millions from disabled people in the NDIS. They have been stoking communalist hatreds.

They are constantly in bed with Dutton. And I mean constantly. They are in bed with him right now blocking numerous reforms.

The lies are getting Trumpian. Will any Greens dare admit that the Albanese Government has spent more on housing in two years than did the Coalition in ten years? Fuck no!

Is there a single Greens who will go anywhere near explaining how the Greens are going to cost and budget an economy wide change involved in getting to Zero Net Forty? Fuck no! But yammer constantly about Labor’s shortcomings? Fuck Yes.

Bandt and Dutton in political bed together. ALL.THE.TIME.

The Thug and his Toolie. Eeeeuw.

I always put my greens ahead of Labor though. Remember that if I get captured on a boat fleeing.

  10. And theres BW proving the point… Page, this is someone who thinks Bore is something to bitch about, but has no issues accusing Greens of being a bunch of astroturfing antisemites spreading hatred in Australia.

The Greens seriously believe that changes at the margin is a good enough reason to delay the implementation of reform after reform after reform.

The current delay in allowing more fed money go into housing supply is a total disgrace.

I hope that Australians wake up to the Dutton/Bandt tag team’s horrible destruction of reforms. It has reached the stage where Labor is simply avoiding putting up reforms that will be blocked by Dutton and Bandt. Disgraceful, but there it is.

We all know that the reason there was not a fundamental reform of the EPBC Act is that the Thug and his Toolie would have combined to block anything that Labor put up. Same for religious discrimination. There is simply no point in giving the Thug and his Toolie more stunting opportunities.

    Where IS my hat?

‘Linda Reynolds says she chose to meet with Brittany Higgins in the room her former staffer had allegedly been raped in a few days earlier because it was the only private space available in her ministerial office suite, a court has heard.

The Western Australian senator said she also was not aware of a potential sexual assault allegation at the time, and didn’t notice any “vibes” or “glances” from Higgins, who she acknowledged was “very upset”.’
    ====================================================

There you have it. No other possible meeting room in all of parliament house she could of used?

Also knowing Higgins was found naked and had mentioned to Fiona Brown waking up with a man on top of her. Reynolds didn’t think any sexual assault allegations could be involved still?

Then again Reynolds has gone back on this story once before. Not the most reliable of witnesses i would say. If her past false testimony in the ACT criminal court trial is any guide to go by.

“Former Defence Minister Linda Reynolds has recanted her Supreme Court evidence that she was never told by a chief of staff that Brittany Higgins had disclosed “I remember him on top of me”.

    https://www.news.com.au/national/politics/former-defence-minister-linda-reynolds-backflips-on-brittany-higgins-evidence/news-story/72c0a93be9acde540cf267ab453ecb45

  16. Bangladesh is the 8th largest country by population and as a consequence the 34th largest economy too. Economically things had been improving quite a bit (of a very low base) until about 2020, but lately things had slowed down a lot. And the people are not going to let the government get away with bad behaviour if the economy is bad.

Cross fingers and hope they can transition it all back to a democracy.

  18. B S Fairman, Boerwar

I agree with your views on Bangladesh. The decline into an institutional autocracy with all the best government jobs going to children of government connected families has been going on for decades. It started under Sheikh Hasina’s father after the East Pakistani (Independence) war in 1971.

In Hasina’s earlier terms in office she helped bring an end to military rule. In recent years government has been accompanied by increasing oppression.

The question will be who succeeds her? Army backing will be crucial

  19. You know the Greens are eating at Labor. They will destroy Labor eventually!

    😆 😆 😆

The Greens’ support in the polls rarely goes above 11%.

I guess they must be taking vewy, vewy small nibbles, as they ‘eat away at Labor’.

Maybe, if they’re lucky they might ‘destroy Labor’ in, oh, about 2132. 😐

Honestly, a few rabidly online Greens’ attack poodles on a politics blog, aping their parliamentary representatives, does not a party headed for government by overtaking Labor make.

  20. Holy shit, now the bore is accusing the greens of DELAYING climate action, whilst approving how many coal and gas projects and passing how many pieces of coalition ‘environmental legislation’ (which of course went too far for the coalition)

And the greens who so vigorously campaigned FOR the voice and whose electorates all votes yes, spent 8 months pissing on it?

And yet MY lies are trumpian

The same greens who are CONSTANTLY pushing for increases of taxes on multinationals, fossil fuels, the very rich etc etc to actually fuel proper public services, the very same services the ALP keeps telling us we can’t afford

But yes bore , it’s the greens, not the ALP that’s a brake on progress

Those damn community independents also keep pushing for integrity and transparency (Anathema to the ALP or coalition)

Remind me again bore, why is the government fighting for the right to shred documents between ministers? Why has the attorney general refused to protect whistleblowers and protect the status quo at every turn?

Some of is actually want a better Australia, not just the slightly less crap and still pretty captured by vested interests that the ALP (shit lite) are serving up

  21. The other day I expressed the view that the actual military threat to Australia from China or others was much less than feared. I remain of that view.

However I agree there is still a high risk of conflict in the region. China – Taiwan is the highest risk of multiple flashpoints.

This article from Japan highlights the reality of those risks. Japan is drawing up plans to evacuate the population of its southern islands in the event of a Chinese attack on Taiwan.
    https://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2024/08/05/japan/taiwan-contingency-evacuation/?utm_source=pianodnu&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=72&tpcc=dnu&pnespid=9vccnjzb4lhc.qo4proq4qka.qmhrxbtmgutrvkrsrevghtsi8rwwzlu0u14g_iv7q8flq

As I said the other day one of the most likely methods China might use to force Taiwan to surrender is blockade. To do this China would seize islands north and south of Taiwan to isolate it. These islands are owned by Japan and the Philippines. It could easily lead to a spreading war.

  22. Page, I say this as the resident flame warrior (just ask Entropy ;))… its not worth it.

There are people here worth having a heated chat with.

BW is definitely not one of them.

Anyone with a vague understanding of reality knows the shit he spouts is simply old man rage propaganda at a world he doesnt understand or like.

Again, better of chatting with others then pointing out the many, maaaany lies he spouts.

    Dont make my mistakes 🙂

  23. Hahaha so it seems the bore doesn’t understand statistics either

BW”The Greens seriously believe that changes at the margin is a good enough reason to delay the implementation of reform after reform after reform.”

So apparently 3 billion, to be spent up front improving existing social and public housing is just a ‘change at the margin ” of a 10 billion dollar fund, which at this point I would remind bludgers that that 10 billion was just an investment and only the interest on that 10b will be spent on…… Something

Yes bore, more money on housing up front than your fund is likely to disperse over 5 years, and making it a floor not a ceiling as it was, but yep that was Just a change at the margin

    And I’m trumpian…….

  24. FUBAR

“ Bangladesh and democracy – is that a joke?”

It wasn’t always. But I agree it has become one over time.

I expect we will hear more about the protests and fighting that led to Hasina’s fleeing when foreign journalists gain access. There are reports of hundreds of dead protesters.

  25. Greenie mutual slag off about Boerwar!

Take it elsewhere or even better get a room.

    ________

Thanks for the polling. It took a while to find amongst this evening’s posts 🙂

  27. Just seen the commentary on the U.S. stockmarket this evening.
When Alabama was posting earlier, it was at minus 600. The futures is now minus 1100, correction has just changed to minus 1250.
Does anyone know what is causing this as the U.S. economy is growing at 2.8% annually. It’s obviously not U.S. GDP figures causing problems unless I am wrong.
I see Japan’s nikkei collapsed today – correct, it is the 3rd largest economy and 2nd largest stock exchange in the world.
Is it a brewing war in the M.E. or is there another issue going on?
For the finance people on the site, will it mean a further sell off tomorrow on the Australian market or best assessed early tomorrow morning.

  28. [But yes bore , it’s the greens, not the ALP that’s a brake on progress]

Yep, BW has that right, every time the Greens in the Senate throw a “I wanna be significant and noticed” tantrum, they delay, default and destroy legislation for the benefit of, mostly the environment, the reduction in the dependence on fossil fuels and any hope of providing a barrier to prevent a return of a corrupt pro coal burning LNP Federal government.
The “over the top” reactions on PB suggests BW niggles something very uncomfortable for the Greens supporters.
And the “the skull” and “the prostrate one” can’t believe their luck.
It’s just a matter of time till the Liberals will be contributing political donations to the Greens.

I haven’t responded to Alabama or FUBAR because what’s the point? They actually want to make things worse (as far as I’m concerned) and I don’t think they’re good faith actors, especially Alabama

… because making more people have jobs, more people becoming wealthier, more people having more money in their pockets, more choice, more freedom is clearly worse.

  33. Boerwar –

“ They have delayed and/or blocked almost every single major Labor reform.”

Labor: “we know there are hungry kids so we will give them all a biscuit.

Greens: “ that is pathetic. No biscuits until you agree to give them each a sandwich as well as a biscuit”

Boerwar: “it is Labor’s fault that the kids are hungry! They are blocking biscuits for hungry children!!!!!”

  34. dave says:

    It’s correct.

If you understand those two factors and that the market can remain irrational longer than you can remain liquid, you’re on a sound basis to successful investing.

And don’t bother trying to pick the bottom – even the professionals generally fail trying to time the markets.

  35. PageBoi

I’m disappointed with the lack of progress from Labor, there have been some obstacles but not enough to make excuses about.

Would have liked to see a lot more regarding unemployed benefits and a focus on winding back negative gearing, investor benefits and overseas property speculation.

Seems they are scared of the wedge.

I say if you’re running scared get out of the game!

Are you reading you Labor pollies who lurk here?

Cheers PageBoi, you mean well, sorry I took a snip.
